14. Analysis of the Precepts 1. Abhidhamma Classification 703. There are five precepts: the precept of abstinence from taking life, the precept of abstinence from taking what is not given, the precept of abstinence from sexual misconduct, the precept of abstinence from false speech, the precept of abstinence from intoxicating drinks and drugs, which are a basis for heedlessness. 704. Among these, what is the precept of abstinence from taking life? When a wholesome consciousness of the sense-sphere arises, accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge, for one abstaining from taking life, that at that time is the cessation, abstinence, desisting, refraining, non-doing, non-committing, non-transgression, non-breaking of the boundary, breaking of the dam, — this is called “the precept of abstinence from taking life.” The remaining phenomena are associated with abstinence. Among these, what is the precept of abstinence from taking life? When a wholesome consciousness of the sense-sphere arises, accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge, for one abstaining from taking life, that at that time is the volition, deliberation, state of having deliberated, — this is called “the precept of abstinence from taking life.” The remaining phenomena are associated with volition. Among these, what is the precept of abstinence from taking life? When a wholesome consciousness of the sense-sphere arises, accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge, for one abstaining from taking life, that at that time is the contact… …effort, non-distraction, — this is called “the precept of abstinence from taking life.” Among these, what is the precept of abstinence from taking life? The remaining phenomena are associated with abstention. 705. What, among these, is the training rule of abstaining from the destruction of life? When a wholesome consciousness of the sense-sphere arises, accompanied by equanimity, dissociated from knowledge, for one abstaining from the destruction of life with effort, that at that time, volition, intention, the state of having intended – this is called "the training rule of abstaining from the destruction of life." The remaining phenomena are associated with volition. What, among these, is the training rule of abstaining from the destruction of life? When a wholesome consciousness of the sense-sphere arises, accompanied by equanimity, dissociated from knowledge, for one abstaining from the destruction of life with effort, contact... and so on... exertion, non-distraction – this is called "the training rule of abstaining from the destruction of life." 706. When a wholesome consciousness of the sense-sphere arises, accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge, for one abstaining from fermented and distilled liquors, which are the basis of heedlessness, that at that time, the cessation, abstention, complete abstention, refraining, non-doing, non-committing, non-transgression, non-overstepping of the boundary, breaking of the bridge from fermented and distilled liquors, which are the basis of heedlessness – this is called "the training rule of abstaining from fermented and distilled liquors, which are the basis of heedlessness." At the time, a wholesome mind of the sense-sphere arises, accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge, inferior... middling... superior... with zeal as dominance... with energy as dominance... with mind as dominance... with investigation as dominance... with zeal as dominance, inferior... middling... superior... with energy as dominance, inferior... middling... superior... with mind as dominance, inferior... middling... superior... with investigation as dominance, inferior... middling... superior... in one abstaining from taking life. Whatever at that time is the cessation, the desisting, the refraining, the abstinence, the non-doing, the non-action, the non-transgression, the not overstepping the boundary, the breaking of the bridge from taking life – this is called "the training rule of abstaining from taking life." The remaining phenomena are associated with abstinence. Among these, what is the training rule of abstaining from taking life? At the time, a wholesome mind of the sense-sphere arises, accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge, inferior... middling... superior... with zeal as dominance... with energy as dominance... with mind as dominance... with investigation as dominance... with zeal as dominance, inferior... middling... superior... with energy as dominance, inferior... middling... superior... with mind as dominance, inferior... middling... superior... with investigation as dominance, inferior... middling... superior... in one abstaining from taking life. Whatever at that time is the volition, the intentional... That which is not itself volition – this is called "the precept of abstinence from killing living beings." The remaining phenomena
