The remaining phenomena are associated with right concentration. 498. The Eightfold Path – right view…(etc.)… right concentration. 499. Therein, what is the Eightfold Path? Here, a monk, at the time when he develops a supramundane jhana, leading to liberation, tending to the fading away (of defilements), for the abandoning of wrong views, for the attainment of the first stage (of awakening), quite secluded from sensual pleasures…(etc.)… enters and dwells in the first jhana, with difficult practice and slow direct knowledge, at that time there is contact…(etc.)… there is non-distraction. These phenomena are wholesome. Because of the doing and developing of that very supramundane wholesome jhana, as its result, quite secluded from sensual pleasures…(etc.)… he enters and dwells in the first jhana, with difficult practice and slow direct knowledge, empty (of self). at that time there is the Eightfold Path – right view…(etc.)… right concentration. This is called is called "the eight-factored path." The remaining phenomena are associated with the eight-factored path. 500. The five-factored path – right view, right intention, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration. 501. Therein, what is the five-factored path? Here, a bhikkhu, at whatever time he develops a supramundane jhana, leading to liberation, tending to decrease (defilements), for the abandoning of wrong views, for the attainment of the first stage (of awakening), having become secluded from sensual pleasures... he enters and dwells in the first jhana, with painful practice and slow direct knowledge, at that time there is contact... there is non-distraction. These phenomena are wholesome. Because that very supramundane wholesome jhana has been done, has been developed, its result (is experienced) having become secluded from sensual pleasures... he enters and dwells in the first jhana, with painful practice and slow direct knowledge, empty (of self), at that time there is the five-factored path – right view, right intention, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration. This is called "the five-factored path." The remaining phenomena are associated with the five-factored path. 502. The five-factored path – right view, right intention, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration. 503. Therein, what is right view? Here, a bhikkhu, at whatever time he develops a supramundane jhana, leading to liberation, tending to decrease (defilements), for the abandoning of wrong views, for the attainment of the first stage (of awakening), having become secluded from sensual pleasures... he enters and dwells in the first jhana, with painful practice and slow direct knowledge, at that time there is contact... there is non-distraction. These phenomena are wholesome. Because that very supramundane wholesome jhana has been done, has been developed, its result (is experienced) having become secluded from sensual pleasures... he enters and dwells in the first jhana, with painful practice and slow direct knowledge, empty (of self), whatever wisdom, understanding, at that time... non-delusion, investigation of phenomena, right view, the enlightenment factor of investigation of phenomena, a factor of the path, included in the path – this is called "right view." The remaining phenomena are associated with right view... The remaining phenomena are associated with right intention... The remaining phenomena are associated with right effort... The remaining phenomena are associated with right mindfulness. Therein, what is right concentration? Here, a monk, at whatever time he develops the supramundane jhāna, which leads to liberation, which leads to the decrease (of defilements), for the abandoning of wrong views, for the attainment of the first stage (of sainthood), having quite secluded himself from sensual pleasures... he enters and dwells in the first jhāna, with painful practice and slow comprehension. At that time, there is contact... there is non-distraction. These phenomena are wholesome. As a result of the doing and developing of that same supramundane wholesome jhāna, the result is: having quite secluded himself from sensual pleasures... he enters and dwells in the first jhāna, with painful practice and slow comprehension, empty (of self). Whatever at that time is the mind's stability, steadfastness, unshakeableness, non-distraction, non-scattering, unscatteredness of mind, tranquility, the faculty of concentration, the power of concentration, right concentration, the concentration enlightenment factor, a factor of the path, included in the path – this is called "right concentration." The remaining phenomena are associated with right concentration. The Abhidhamma analysis. 3. The Question Section 504. The Noble Eightfold Path, namely – right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration. 505. Of the eight path factors, how many are wholesome, how many are unwholesome, how many are indeterminate... how many are with support, how many are without support? 1. Triad 506. They may be wholesome, they may be indeterminate. Right intention is associated with pleasant feeling; seven path factors may be associated with pleasant feeling, may be associated with neither-pleasant-nor-unpleasant feeling. They may be results, they may be phenomena that lead to results. Not clung to, not for clinging. Undefiled, not defiling. Right intention is only without initial application and sustained application; seven path factors may be with initial application and sustained application, may be only without initial application and with sustained application, may be without initial application and without sustained application. Right intention is accompanied by joy, accompanied by pleasure, not accompanied by equanimity. to; the seven path-factors may be accompanied by joy, may be accompanied by happiness, may be accompanied by equanimity. They are not to be abandoned by seeing, nor by development. They are not caused to be abandoned by seeing, nor by development. They may be leading to decrease, they may be neither leading to decrease nor to increase. They may be trainees, they may be perfected ones. Immeasurable. Having immeasurable objects. Excellent. They may be fixed in rightness, they may be unfixed. Not having the path as object, they may have the path as cause, they may have the path as dominant factor; they may not be describable as having the path as cause, nor as having the path as dominant factor. They may be arisen, they may be unarisen, they may be arising. They may be past, they may be future, they may be present. They are not to be described as having past objects, nor as having future objects, nor as having present objects. They may be internal, they may be external, they may be internal and external. Having external objects. Indiscernible and without resistance. 2. Dyad 507. Right view is a root, the seven path-factors are not roots. They are rooted. Associated with roots. Right view is both a root and rooted, the seven path-factors are not to be described as both a root and rooted, but as rooted and not a root. Right view is both a root and associated with roots, the seven path-factors are not to be described as both a root and associated with roots, but as associated with roots and not a root. The seven path-factors are not roots, they are rooted; right view is not to be described as not a root and rooted, nor as not a root and unrooted. Conditioned. Formed. Indiscernible. Without resistance. Immaterial. Supramundane. Knowable by some, not knowable by some. Not defilements. Undefiled. Disjoined from defilements. Not to be described as both defilements and defiled, nor as defiled and not defilements. Not to be described as both defilements and associated with defilements, nor as associated with defilements and not defilements. Disjoined from defilements. Undefiled. Not fetters…etc… not ties…etc… not floods…etc… not yokes…etc… not hindrances…etc… not perversions…etc… having objects. Not consciousness. Mental concomitants. Associated with consciousness. Conjoined with consciousness. Originated from consciousness. Accompanied by consciousness. Not generative. Following the mind. Arising conjoined with the mind. Co-existent with the arising conjoined with the mind. Following the arising conjoined with the mind. External. Not clinging. Not clung to. Not clingings... not defilements... Not to be abandoned by seeing. Not to be abandoned by development. Not having causes to be abandoned by seeing. Not having causes to be abandoned by development. Right Intention is without initial application, the seven path factors may be with initial application, may be without initial application. Right Intention is with sustained application, the seven path factors may be with sustained application, may be without sustained application. Right Intention is with joy, the seven path factors may be with joy, may be without joy. Right Intention is accompanied by joy, the seven path factors may be accompanied by joy, may not be accompanied by joy.
