They are extinguished at the end of clinging." "Venerable Nāgasena, what is the Nectar-House of the Buddha, the Blessed One?" "The Nectar, O Great King, was declared by the Blessed One, with which Nectar that Blessed One sprinkled the world with its devas, with which Nectar, being sprinkled, devas and humans were liberated from birth, old age, sickness, death, sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair. What is that Nectar? It is mindfulness of the body. This was also spoken, O Great King, by the God of gods, the Blessed One: 'They, O monks, partake of the deathless, who partake of mindfulness of the body.' This is called, O Great King, 'the Nectar-House of the Blessed One.'" "Seeing the ailing populace, He spread out the Nectar-House; Having bought it with effort, Take the Nectar, O monks." "Venerable Nāgasena, what is the Jewel-House of the Buddha, the Blessed One?" "The Jewels, O Great King, were declared by the Blessed One, adorned with which Jewels the sons of the Blessed One shine forth, illuminate, radiate, blaze, and glow in the world with its devas, showing light upwards, downwards, and across. What are those Jewels? The jewel of virtue, the jewel of concentration, the jewel of wisdom, the jewel of liberation, the jewel of knowledge and vision of liberation, the jewel of analytical knowledge, the jewel of the factors of awakening. "What, O Great King, is the jewel of virtue of the Blessed One? The virtue of restraint by the Pātimokkha, the virtue of sense-restraint, the virtue of purity of livelihood, the virtue of reliance on requisites, the minor virtues, the middle virtues, the great virtues, the virtue of the path, the virtue of the fruit. Indeed, O Great King, the world with its devas, with its Māra, with its Brahmā, with its recluses and brahmins, desires and longs for a person adorned with the jewel of virtue; indeed, O Great King, one adorned with the jewel of virtue the monk shines in all directions, in the intermediate directions, above, below, and across, he shines exceedingly, surpassing and overwhelming all jewels from the Avīci hell below to the highest realm of existence above, standing supreme within this interval. Such, great king, are the jewels of virtue displayed in the Buddha's jewel market. This, great king, is called 'the Buddha's jewel of virtue.' 'Such virtues are in the Buddha's market; Acquire them by action, and adorn yourselves with this jewel.' What, great king, is the Buddha's jewel of concentration? It is concentration with initial and sustained application, concentration with only sustained application, concentration without initial and sustained application, empty concentration, signless concentration, undirected concentration. The jewel of concentration, great king, when worn by a monk, causes all those objects of defilement— thoughts of sensual desire, thoughts of ill-will, thoughts of harm, conceit, restlessness, wrong views, doubt— and various unwholesome thoughts, all of them, upon encountering concentration, scatter, disperse, are destroyed, do not remain, do not adhere. Just as, great king, water on a lotus leaf scatters, disperses, is destroyed, does not remain, does not adhere. Why is that? Because of the purity of the lotus. Even so, great king, when the jewel of concentration is worn by a monk, all those objects of defilement— thoughts of sensual desire, thoughts of ill-will, thoughts of harm, conceit, restlessness, wrong views, doubt— and various unwholesome thoughts, all of them, upon encountering concentration, scatter, disperse, are destroyed, do not remain, do not adhere. Why is that? Because of the purity of concentration. This, great king, is called 'the Buddha's jewel of concentration.' Such, great king, are the jewels of concentration displayed in the Buddha's jewel market. 'For one adorned with the jewel of concentration, unwholesome thoughts do not arise; Nor does the mind become scattered, adorn yourselves with this.' Thus. “What, great king, is the Lord’s jewel of wisdom?” “That wisdom, great king, by which a noble disciple knows ‘this is wholesome’ as it truly is, knows ‘this is unwholesome’ as it truly is, knows ‘this is blameworthy, this is blameless, this is to be cultivated, this is not to be cultivated, this is inferior, this is superior, this is dark, this is bright, this is mixed dark and bright’ as it truly is, knows ‘this is suffering’ as it truly is, knows ‘this is the origin of suffering’ as it truly is, knows ‘this is the cessation of suffering’ as it truly is, knows ‘this is the path leading to the cessation of suffering’ as it truly is. This, great king, is called ‘the Lord’s jewel of wisdom’.” “For one who has the garland of the jewel of wisdom, existence does not long endure; swiftly he touches the Deathless, nor does he delight in existence.” “What, great king, is the Lord’s jewel of liberation?” “The jewel of liberation, great king, is called Arahantship. A bhikkhu who has attained Arahantship, great king, is said to be ‘adorned with the jewel of liberation’. Just as, great king, a man adorned with necklaces of pearls, necklaces of gems, necklaces of coral, his body smeared with aloes, agallochum, tālīsa, and red sandalwood, decorated with nāga, punnāga, sāla, salaḷa, campaka, yūthikā, atimuttaka, pāṭala, uppala, vassikā, and mallikā flowers, outshines, shines forth, radiates, illumines, glows, blazes, overcomes, and overwhelms other people with garlands, perfumes, and jewel ornaments; even so, great king, a bhikkhu who has attained Arahantship, whose defilements are destroyed, adorned with the jewel of liberation, surpasses and outshines, shines forth, radiates, illumines, glows, blazes, overcomes, and overwhelms other liberated bhikkhus, one after another, by means of liberation. For what reason? This, great king, is the foremost adornment among all of all adornments, which is the adornment of liberation. This is called, great king, 'the Buddha's jewel of liberation.' " 'A householder looks upon his lord, adorned with a garland of jewels; But gods and humans look upon the garland of the jewel of liberation.' "What, great king, is the Buddha's jewel of knowledge and vision of liberation? The knowledge of review, great king, is called the Buddha's jewel of knowledge and vision of liberation, by which knowledge the noble disciple reviews the paths, fruits, and Nibbāna, and the defilements abandoned and the defilements remaining. " 'Those who by knowledge awaken to the task accomplished by the noble ones; Strive to obtain that jewel of knowledge, O sons of the Victor!' "What, great king, is the Buddha's jewel of analytical knowledge? There are, great king, four analytical knowledges: analytical knowledge of meaning, analytical knowledge of phenomena, analytical knowledge of language, and analytical knowledge of ready wit. Adorned with these four jewels of analytical knowledge, great king, a bhikkhu approaches whatever assembly, whether an assembly of khattiyas, or an assembly of brahmins, or an assembly of householders, or an assembly of ascetics, he approaches with confidence, unashamed, fearless, unperplexed, untrembling, with hair not standing on end, he approaches the assembly. "Just as, great king, a warrior brave in battle, equipped with five weapons, fearlessly enters the fray, 'If the enemies are far away, I will strike them with an arrow; if they are closer, I will strike them with a spear; if they are still closer, I will strike them with a club; if they are close, I will cleave them in two with a sword; if they are upon me, I will pierce them with a dagger,' even so, great king, a bhikkhu adorned with the four jewels of analytical knowledge fearlessly approaches an assembly. Whoever asks me a question on the analytical knowledge of meaning, I will explain meaning with meaning, I will explain reason with reason, I will explain cause with cause, I will explain method with method. I will explain, I will remove doubt, I will dispel perplexity, I will satisfy with an answer to the question. "Whoever asks me a question concerning the analytical knowledge of Dhamma, to him I will explain Dhamma by Dhamma, I will explain the Deathless by the Deathless, I will explain the Unconditioned by the Unconditioned, I will explain Nibbāna by Nibbāna, I will explain Emptiness by Emptiness, I will explain the Signless by the Signless, I will explain the Aimless by the Aimless, I will explain the Imperturbable by the Imperturbable, I will remove doubt, I will dispel perplexity, I will satisfy with an answer to the question. "Whoever asks me a question concerning the analytical knowledge of language, to him I will explain expression by expression, I will explain word by word, I will explain phrase by phrase, I will explain letter by letter, I will explain conjunction by conjunction, I will explain consonant by consonant, I will explain secondary consonant by secondary consonant, I will explain sound by sound, I will explain vowel by vowel, I will explain concept by concept, I will explain usage by usage, I will remove doubt, I will dispel perplexity, I will satisfy with an answer to the question. "Whoever asks me a question concerning the analytical knowledge of ready wit, to him I will explain ready wit by ready wit, I will explain simile by simile, I will explain characteristic by characteristic, I will explain essence by essence, I will remove doubt, I will dispel perplexity, I will satisfy with an answer to the question." This is called, O great king, 'the Buddha's jewel of analytical knowledge'. "Having acquired analytical knowledge, whoever would touch it with wisdom, undaunted, unafraid, he shines forth among gods and humans." Which, O great king, is the Buddha's jewel of the factors of awakening? These seven, O great king, are the factors of awakening: the factor of awakening of mindfulness, the factor of awakening of investigation of phenomena, the factor of awakening of energy,
