What is meant by the power of insight? It is the power of insight because it is not shaken by the perception of permanence through contemplating impermanence. It is the power of insight because it is not shaken by the perception of pleasure through contemplating suffering. It is the power of insight because it is not shaken by the perception of self through contemplating non-self. It is the power of insight because it is not shaken by delight through contemplating disenchantment. It is the power of insight because it is not shaken by lust through contemplating dispassion. It is the power of insight because it is not shaken by origination through contemplating cessation. It is the power of insight because it is not shaken by grasping through contemplating relinquishment. It is the power of insight because it is not shaken, not wavered, not trembled by ignorance, by defilements associated with ignorance, and by the aggregates. This is the power of insight. What are the ten powers of one in training, the ten powers of one beyond training? He trains in right view – this is the power of one in training. Having trained in it – this is the power of one beyond training. He trains in right intention – this is the power of one in training. Having trained in it – this is the power of one beyond training. In right speech…and so on… in right action… in right livelihood… in right effort… in right mindfulness… in right concentration… in right knowledge…and so on… in right liberation, he trains – this is the power of one in training. Having trained in it – this is the power of one beyond training. These are the ten powers of one in training, the ten powers of one beyond training. What are the ten powers of one whose taints are destroyed? Here, for a monk whose taints are destroyed, all formations are well seen as impermanent with right wisdom as they really are. are well seen. And further, for a monk whose taints are destroyed, all formations are well seen as impermanent, as they truly are, with right wisdom. That too is a power for a monk whose taints are destroyed, relying on which power, a monk whose taints are destroyed declares the destruction of the taints: "My taints are destroyed." That too is a power for a monk whose taints are destroyed, relying on which power, a monk whose taints are destroyed declares the destruction of the taints: "My taints are destroyed." And further, for a monk whose taints are destroyed, his mind inclines to seclusion, leans to seclusion, tends to seclusion, is established in seclusion, delights in renunciation, is completely free from all things that are grounds for taints. That too is a power for a monk whose taints are destroyed, relying on which power, a monk whose taints are destroyed declares the destruction of the taints: "My taints are destroyed." And further, for a monk whose taints are destroyed, the four foundations of mindfulness are developed, well developed. That too is a power for a monk whose taints are destroyed, relying on which power, a monk whose taints are destroyed declares the destruction of the taints: "My taints are destroyed." And further, for a monk whose taints are destroyed, the four right exertions are developed, well developed... the four bases of psychic power are developed, well developed... the five faculties are developed, well developed... the five powers are developed, well developed... the seven factors of enlightenment are developed, well developed... the Noble Eightfold Path is developed... is developed, well-developed. And also, for the monk whose taints are destroyed, the eightfold path is developed, well-developed. This too is a power for the monk whose taints are destroyed, relying on which power, the monk whose taints are destroyed declares the destruction of taints – "My taints are destroyed." These are the ten powers of one whose taints are destroyed. What are the ten powers of psychic potency? Potency of determination, Potency of transformation, Potency of mind-made body, Potency of pervading with knowledge, Potency of pervading with concentration, Noble potency, Potency born of kamma-result, Potency of the meritorious, Potency born of knowledge, Potency in the sense of succeeding due to right application in various ways – These are the ten powers of psychic potency. What are the ten powers of a Tathāgata? Here, a Tathāgata knows as it is the possible as possible and the impossible as impossible. And also, that a Tathāgata knows as it is the possible as possible and the impossible as impossible, this too is a power of a Tathāgata for the Tathāgata, relying on which power, a Tathāgata declares the foremost state, roars a lion's roar in assemblies, and sets in motion the wheel of Dhamma. Furthermore, a Tathāgata knows as it is the result of past, future, and present actions undertaken, with their reasons and causes. And also, that a Tathāgata knows as it is the path leading everywhere, this too is a power of a Tathāgata for the Tathāgata, relying on which power, a Tathāgata declares the foremost state, roars a lion's roar in assemblies, and sets in motion the wheel of Dhamma. Furthermore, a Tathāgata (knows) the world with its many and various elements knows as it really is. And that the Tathāgata knows the world with its many and various elements as it really is, this too is of the Tathāgata…etc…. Furthermore, the Tathāgata knows the various dispositions of beings as they really are. Furthermore, the Tathāgata knows the superior and inferior faculties of other beings, other persons, as they really are. For what reason is energy a power? For what reason is mindfulness a power? For what reason is concentration a power? For what reason is wisdom a power? For what reason is shame a power? For what reason is dread of blame a power? For what reason is power of reflection…? For what reason is the Tathāgata's power? Faith is a power for its unshakeability in faithlessness. Energy is a power for its unshakeability in laziness. Mindfulness is a power for its unshakeability in heedlessness. Concentration is a power for its unshakeability in restlessness. Wisdom is a power for its unshakeability in ignorance. One is ashamed of evil, unwholesome things – that is the power of shame. One dreads evil, unwholesome things – that is the power of dread of blame. One reflects on defilements with knowledge – that is the power of reflection. The phenomena arisen therein are of one taste – that is the power of development. There is nothing blameworthy therein – that is the power of blamelessness. One thereby gathers the mind – that is the power of gathering. That is acceptable to him – that is the power of patience. One thereby makes the mind known – that is the power of declaration. One thereby makes the mind clear – that is the power of discernment. One thereby controls the mind – that is the power of mastery. One thereby resolves the mind – that is the power of resolution. One thereby makes the mind unified – that is the power of tranquility. One thereby contemplates the phenomena arisen therein – that is the power of insight.
