The Exposition on the Knowledge of the Diversity of Planes. 72. How is wisdom in the determination of the four phenomena, knowledge in the diversity of planes? There are four planes – the sensual plane, the form plane, the formless plane, the unincluded plane. What is the sensual plane? Taking the Avīci hell below as the limit, and including the Paranimmita-vasavattī devas above, whatever in this interval, belonging here, included here, are aggregates, elements, sense-bases: form, feeling, perception, volitional formations, consciousness – this is the sensual plane. What is the form plane? Taking the Brahma world below as the limit, and including the Akaniṭṭha devas above, whatever in this interval, belonging here, included here, are mental states and mental concomitants of one who has attained (jhāna), or has been reborn (there), or dwells happily in this very life – this is the form plane. What is the formless plane? Taking the devas who have attained the sphere of infinite space below as the limit, and including the devas who have attained the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception above, whatever in this interval, belonging here, included here, are mental states and mental concomitants of one who has attained (jhāna), or has been reborn (there), or dwells happily in this very life – this is the formless plane. What is the unincluded plane? The unincluded are the paths and the fruits of the paths and the unconditioned element – this is the unincluded plane. These are the four planes. And other four grounds: four foundations of mindfulness, four right exertions, four bases of psychic power, four jhānas, four immeasurables, four formless attainments, four analytical knowledges, four paths, four objects, four noble lineages, four bases of sympathy, four wheels, four dhammapadas – these are the four grounds.
