That Paccekasambuddha, at the end of life, dwells fearless, untrembling, unagitated, undoubting, unafraid, unapprehensive, untrembling, unretreating, having abandoned fear and terror, with hair standing on end gone – "fearless at the end of life, one should wander alone, like a rhinoceros horn." Therefore, that Paccekasambuddha said – "Abandoning lust and hatred and delusion, having shattered the fetters; fearless at the end of life, one should wander alone, like a rhinoceros horn." 161. They associate and serve for a reason, friends without reason are rare today; people are impure, intent on their own gain, one should wander alone, like a rhinoceros horn. "They associate and serve for a reason" means for the sake of one's own gain, for the sake of others' gain, for the sake of both, for the sake of gain in this life, for the sake of gain in the next life, for the sake of ultimate gain, they associate, fully associate, serve, fully serve, completely serve, repeatedly serve – "they associate and serve for a reason." "Friends without reason are rare today" means two kinds of friends – a householder friend and a homeless one... this householder One friend... ...this friend who has gone forth from home. "Friends without cause are rare today" means these two friends, without cause, without reason, without motive, without condition, are rare. Thus: Friends without cause are rare today. "People wise for their own gain are impure." "Wise for their own gain" means: for their own purpose, for their own reason, for their own condition, for their own cause, they associate, they fully associate, they serve, they fully serve, they attend, they fully attend, they behave, they fully behave, they wait upon, they question, they inquire. This is "wise for their own gain." "Impure people" means: endowed with impure bodily action are impure people, endowed with impure verbal action are impure people, endowed with impure mental action are impure people, endowed with impure taking of life... ...with impure taking of what is not given... ...with impure sexual misconduct... ...with impure false speech... ...with impure slanderous speech... ...with impure harsh speech... ...with impure frivolous talk... ...with impure covetousness... ...with impure ill-will are impure people. endowed with impure wrong view are impure people, endowed with impure intention are impure people, endowed with impure aspiration are impure people, endowed with impure resolve are impure people. Impure are those who are low, debased, inferior, vile, contemptible, insignificant. This is "people wise for their own gain are impure." "One should wander alone like a rhinoceros horn." "One" means that Paccekabuddha, one by virtue of having gone forth... "Wanders" means the eight kinds of conduct... "Like a rhinoceros horn" means just as a rhinoceros's horn is one, without a second... Thus: one should wander alone like a rhinoceros horn. Therefore, that Paccekabuddha said: They associate and serve for a purpose, Friends without cause are rare today; People wise for their own gain are impure, One should wander alone like a rhinoceros horn. The Fourth Chapter. The explanation of the Rhinoceros Horn Sutta is finished. Ajita, Tissa-Metteyya, Puṇṇaka, and then Mettagū; Dhotaka, Upasīva, Nanda, and then Hemaka. Todeyya and Kappa, both, Jatukaṇṇī, the wise; Bhadrāvudha, Udaya, and Posāla, the brahmin; Mogharāja, the intelligent, and Piṅgiya, the great seer. For these sixteen brahmins, the teaching; The explanations of the Pārāyana, are indeed so many. And the explanations of the Rhinoceros Horn Sutta are likewise; The explanations are known to be of two kinds, complete and well-defined. The Minor Niddesa Pāḷi is finished.
