"whatever is of the nature to arise, all that is of the nature to cease" – comprehended states, known states, weighed states, judged states, understood states, clarified states. Or, for that Paccekabuddha, the aggregates are curtailed, the elements are curtailed, the sense bases are curtailed, the destinations are curtailed, the rebirths are curtailed, the re-linkings are curtailed, the existences are curtailed, the transmigrations are curtailed, the cycles are curtailed. Or, that Paccekabuddha stands at the end of the aggregates, stands at the end of the elements, stands at the end of the sense bases, stands at the end of destinations, stands at the end of rebirths, stands at the end of re-linkings, stands at the end of existences... Standing at the end of suffering, Standing at the end of transmigration, Standing at the end of the cycle, Standing at the end of formations, Standing in the final existence, Standing in the final aggregation, Bearing the final body, Is the Private Buddha. This is his last existence, This is his final aggregation; The cycle of birth and death, There is no rebirth for him. For that reason, the Private Buddha is one whose nature is understood. "Determined" means the four noble paths are called the "determinations." Endowed with the four noble paths, he is "determined." He has attained, reached, comprehended, touched, realized, attained the determination. "Endowed with exertion" means exertion is called effort. That is the mental initiation of effort, going forth, striving, exertion, endeavor, enthusiasm, steadfastness, strength, firmness, unflagging striving, unabandoned desire, unabandoned burden, taking up the burden, effort, faculty of effort, power of effort, right effort. That Private Buddha is endowed, fully endowed, approached, fully approached, possessed, fully possessed, endowed with this exertion. Therefore, that Private Buddha is "endowed with exertion" – whose nature is understood, determined, endowed with exertion, let him wander alone like a rhinoceros horn. Therefore, that Private Buddha said – "Desiring the destruction of craving, diligent, Not foolish, learned, mindful; Whose nature is understood, determined, endowed with exertion, Let him wander alone like a rhinoceros horn." 157. Like a lion, unafraid of sounds, Like the wind, unattached to a net, Like a lotus, unsoiled by water, Let him wander alone like a rhinoceros horn. "Like a lion, unafraid of sounds" means: just as a lion, the king of beasts, is unafraid of sounds, not utterly afraid, not trembling, not agitated, not suspicious, not terrified, fearless, unstartled, not trembling, not fleeing, so too the Private Buddha is unafraid of sounds, not utterly afraid, not trembling, not agitated, not suspicious, not terrified, fearless, unstartled, not trembling, not fleeing. He dwells with fear and terror abandoned, with hairs standing on end gone – like a lion unafraid of sounds. Like wind unattached to a net. Wind means eastern winds, western winds, northern winds, southern winds, dusty winds, dustless winds, cold winds, hot winds, light winds, strong winds, high winds, wing winds, Garuda winds, palm-leaf winds, winnowing winds. Net is called a thread-net. Just as wind does not cling to, does not grasp, is not bound by, is not entangled in a net, even so there are two nets – the net of craving and the net of views... ...this is the net of craving... ...this is the net of views. For that Paccekabuddha, the net of craving is abandoned, the net of views is relinquished. Because the net of craving is abandoned, because the net of views is relinquished, that Paccekabuddha does not cling to forms, does not cling to sounds... ...does not cling to, does not grasp, is not bound by, is not entangled in things seen, heard, sensed, and cognized. He is gone forth, released, freed, disjoined, he dwells with a mind made boundless – like wind unattached to a net. Like a lotus unsoiled by water. Lotus is called a lotus flower. Water is called water. Just as a lotus flower is not soiled by water, is not stained, is not smeared, unsoiled, unstained, unsmeared, even so there are two defilements – the defilement of craving and the defilement of views... ...this is the defilement of craving... ...this is the defilement of views. For that Paccekabuddha, the defilement of craving is abandoned, the defilement of views is relinquished. Because the defilement of craving is abandoned, because the defilement of views is relinquished, that Paccekabuddha is not soiled by forms, is not soiled by sounds... ...is not soiled by, is not stained by, is not smeared by things seen, heard, sensed, and cognized. He is unsoiled, unstained, unsmeared, gone forth, released, freed, disjoined, he dwells with a mind made boundless – like a lotus. As a lotus unsoiled by water, one should wander alone like a rhinoceros horn. Therefore, that Paccekabuddha said: "Like a lion, fearless of sounds, like the wind, unattached to a net; Like a lotus, unsoiled by water, one should wander alone like a rhinoceros horn." 158. As a lion, strong-fanged, mighty, a king of beasts, ranging victoriously; He should resort to remote abodes, one should wander alone like a rhinoceros horn. As a lion, strong-fanged, mighty, a king of beasts, ranging victoriously: Just as a lion, king of beasts, strong-fanged, armed with fangs, overcoming, overpowering, overwhelming, seizing, crushing all four-footed creatures, wanders, lives, moves, acts, protects, maintains, sustains; so too, a Paccekabuddha, strong in wisdom, armed with wisdom, overcoming, overpowering, overwhelming, seizing, crushing all beings and individuals with wisdom, wanders, lives, moves, acts, protects, maintains, sustains. Thus: As a lion, strong-fanged, mighty, a king of beasts, ranging victoriously. He should resort to remote abodes: Just as a lion, king of beasts, plunges into the midst of forests and groves, wanders, lives, moves, acts, protects, maintains, sustains; so too, a Paccekabuddha resorts to remote abodes in forests and groves, which are quiet, free from noise, with secluded winds, suitable for human privacy, conducive to seclusion. He goes alone, stands alone, sits alone, lies down alone, enters the village for alms alone, returns alone, sits in solitude alone, undertakes walking meditation alone, wanders, lives, moves, acts, protects, maintains, sustains. Thus: He should resort to remote abodes, one should wander alone like a rhinoceros horn. Therefore, that Paccekabuddha said: "As a lion, strong-fanged, mighty, a king of beasts, ranging victoriously; He should resort to remote abodes, one should wander alone like a rhinoceros horn." 159. Practicing loving-kindness, equanimity, compassion, liberation, and sympathetic joy at the proper time; Unattached to all the world, being unhindered, alone should wander like a rhinoceros horn. Practicing loving-kindness, equanimity, compassion, liberation, and sympathetic joy in due time, that Paccekabuddha dwells pervading one direction with a mind accompanied by loving-kindness, likewise the second, likewise the third, likewise the fourth; thus upwards, downwards, across, everywhere, in all ways, the entire world he dwells pervading with a mind accompanied by loving-kindness, vast, exalted, immeasurable, without enmity, without ill-will. With a mind accompanied by compassion… with a mind accompanied by sympathetic joy… with a mind accompanied by equanimity, vast, exalted, immeasurable, without enmity, without ill-will, he dwells pervading. Thus: Practicing loving-kindness, equanimity, compassion, liberation, and sympathetic joy in due time. "Not conflicting with the whole world" means: because of the cultivation of loving-kindness, those beings in the eastern direction become not repulsive; those beings in the western direction… those beings in the northern direction… those beings in the southern direction… those beings in the eastern intermediate direction… those beings in the western intermediate direction… those beings in the northern intermediate direction… those beings in the southern intermediate direction… those beings in the lower direction… those beings in the upper direction… those beings in the ten directions become not repulsive. Because of the cultivation of compassion… because of the cultivation of sympathetic joy… because of the cultivation of equanimity, those beings in the eastern direction… those beings in the ten directions become not repulsive. "Not conflicting with the whole world" means: not conflicting with the whole world, not opposing, not harming, not obstructing. Thus: not conflicting with the whole world, alone should wander like a rhinoceros horn. Therefore that Paccekabuddha said: "Practicing loving-kindness, equanimity, compassion, liberation, and sympathetic joy in due time; not conflicting with the whole world, alone should wander like a rhinoceros horn." 160. Having abandoned lust and hatred and delusion, having shattered the fetters; Asant Fearless at life's end, one should wander alone, like a rhinoceros horn. "Abandoning lust and hatred and delusion." Lust means that which is lust, attachment... greed, covetousness, a root of unwholesome. Hatred means that which is vexation of mind... fierceness, ill-will, discontent of mind. Delusion means ignorance of suffering... the flame of ignorance, delusion, a root of unwholesome. "Abandoning lust and hatred and delusion" means that the Paccekasambuddha, having abandoned, given up, removed, made an end of, brought to naught lust and hatred and delusion – "abandoning lust and hatred and delusion." "Having shattered the fetters." Ten fetters – the fetter of sensual desire, the fetter of ill-will... the fetter of ignorance. "Having shattered the fetters" means having shattered, broken, completely shattered, abandoned, removed, made an end of, brought to naught the ten fetters – "having shattered the fetters." "Fearless at the end of life."
