Here, some evil-wisher, overcome by desire, with the intention of being esteemed, "Thus will people esteem me," arranges his walking, arranges his standing, arranges his sitting, arranges his lying down. He walks with intention, he stands with intention, he sits with intention, he lies down with intention. He walks as if composed, he stands as if composed, He stands as if composed, he sits as if composed, he arranges his bed, he becomes like one meditating for show. Whatever such setting up, establishing, arranging of posture, frowning, deceit, deceiving, and the state of being deceitful – this is the basis of deceit called 'posture'. What is the basis of deceit called 'flattering talk'? Here someone of evil wishes, overcome by desire, with the intention of being esteemed, "Thus people will esteem me," speaks words connected with the Noble Dhamma. "Whoever wears such a robe, that monk is mighty," he says; whoever carries such an alms-bowl, carries a metal plate, carries a Dhamma-implement, carries a water-strainer, carries a key, wears sandals, wears a waist-band, wears a shoulder-strap, that monk is mighty," he says; "Whoever has such a preceptor, that monk is mighty," he says; whoever has such a teacher, such co-preceptors, co-teachers, friends, acquaintances, close associates, companions, that monk is mighty," he says; whoever dwells in such a monastery, dwells in a half-cell, dwells in a palace, dwells in a mansion, dwells in a cave, dwells in a rock-shelter, dwells in a hut, dwells in a gabled house, dwells in a tower, dwells in an upper storey, dwells in a high place, dwells in a service hall, dwells in a pavilion, dwells at the foot of a tree, that monk is mighty," he says. Or else, being very austere, very frowning, very deceitful, very talkative, one who makes himself esteemed by his words, "This monk is a recipient of such peaceful attainments of dwelling," he speaks such a deep, hidden, subtle, concealed, supramundane talk connected with emptiness. Whatever such frowning, deceit, deceiving, and the state of being deceitful – this is the basis of deceit called 'flattering talk'. the basis of deceit, called flattery. For that Paccekabuddha, these three bases of deceit are abandoned, uprooted, calmed, tranquilized, incapable of arising again, burnt by the fire of knowledge. Therefore, that Paccekabuddha is without deceit. "Without thirst" means thirst is called craving. That which is lust, attachment... covetousness, greed, a root of unwholesomeness. That thirst, that craving, for that Paccekabuddha is abandoned, its root cut off, made like a palm-stump, made non-existent, not liable to arise again in the future. "Delusion" is ignorance of suffering, ignorance of the origin of suffering, ignorance of the cessation of suffering, ignorance of the path leading to the cessation of suffering, ignorance of the past, ignorance of the future, ignorance of both past and future, ignorance of dependent co-arising and dependently arisen phenomena. That such ignorance, non-seeing, non-comprehension, non-understanding, non-penetration, non-grasping, non-fathoming, non-contemplation, non-reflection, non-realization, dull-wittedness, foolishness, lack of clear comprehension, delusion, great delusion, utter delusion, unknowing, flood of unknowing, yoke of unknowing, underlying tendency of unknowing, obsession of unknowing, entanglement of unknowing, delusion, a root of unwholesomeness. For that Paccekabuddha, ingratitude, and stain, and delusion are vomited forth, completely vomited forth, dispelled, abandoned, uprooted, calmed, tranquilized, incapable of arising again, burnt by the fire of knowledge. That Paccekabuddha is without ingratitude, having dispelled stain and delusion. "Having become without hope in all worlds" means. Hope is called craving. That which is lust, attachment... covetousness, greed, a root of unwholesomeness. "In all worlds" means in all worlds of woe, in all human worlds, in all divine worlds, In all worlds of aggregates, in all worlds of elements, in all worlds of sense-bases. Having become desireless in all worlds, having become desireless in all worlds, having become free from craving, having become free from thirst – having become desireless in all worlds, Let one wander alone like a rhinoceros horn. Therefore, that Paccekabuddha said: Greedless, deceitless, thirstless, Without hypocrisy, with defilements and delusion cast off; Having become desireless in all worlds, Let one wander alone like a rhinoceros horn. 143.
