" Or, whatever was to be understood, to be fully understood, to be thoroughly understood, to be perfectly understood, to be attained, to be touched, to be realized, all that he understood, fully understood, thoroughly understood, perfectly understood, attained, touched, realized by that awakening-knowledge. Thus, the Blessed One alone fully awakened to the unsurpassed perfect self-awakening, so he is "one." "Dispeller of darkness" means the Blessed One dispelled, thoroughly dispelled, abandoned, removed, utterly destroyed, brought to non-existence the darkness of lust, the darkness of hatred, the darkness of delusion, the darkness of wrong views, the darkness of defilements, the darkness of misconduct, that which blinds, that which makes one sightless, that which causes ignorance, that which obstructs wisdom, that which is on the side of affliction, that which does not lead to Nibbāna. "Seated" means the Blessed One, seated on a rock, meditates – seated. Seated at the foot of a mountain, The sage, who has crossed beyond suffering; His disciples attend upon him, The three-knowledge bearers, who have overcome death. Thus, the Blessed One is seated... (and so on)... Or, the Blessed One is seated due to the complete calming of all agitation; he has completed his residence, fulfilled his conduct... (and so on)... there is no rebirth for him in the cycle of birth and death; thus, the Blessed One is seated – "one, dispeller of darkness, seated." "He is radiant, the light-maker." "Radiant" means radiant, intelligent, wise, discerning, sagacious, knowing, insightful, astute. "Light-maker" means light-maker, illuminator, enlightener, lamp. He is a marker, a lamp-maker, an enlightener, an illuminator – he is luminous, a light-maker. Gotama of vast wisdom, thus: Gotama of vast wisdom, wisdom of knowledge, wisdom his banner, wisdom his standard, wisdom his mastery, abundant in investigation, abundant in thorough investigation, abundant in scrutiny, whose nature is thorough scrutiny, dwelling in distinction, whose conduct is that, abundant in that, devoted to that, inclined to that, bent towards that, leaning towards that, resolute in that, dominant in that. A banner is the mark of a chariot, smoke is the mark of fire; A king is the mark of a country, a husband is the mark of a woman. Just so, Gotama of vast wisdom, wisdom of knowledge, wisdom his banner, wisdom his standard, wisdom his mastery, abundant in investigation, abundant in thorough investigation, abundant in scrutiny, whose nature is thorough scrutiny, dwelling in distinction, whose conduct is that, abundant in that, devoted to that, inclined to that, bent towards that, leaning towards that, resolute in that, dominant in that – Gotama of vast wisdom. Gotama of vast intelligence, thus: 'Bhūri' is called earth. The Blessed One is endowed with wisdom like that earth, vast and extensive. 'Medhā' is called wisdom. That wisdom, understanding... non-delusion, investigation of phenomena, right view. The Blessed One is endowed, fully endowed, approached, fully approached, possessed, fully possessed, endowed with this intelligence. Therefore, the Buddha is of vast intelligence – Gotama of vast intelligence. Therefore said the elder Piṅgiya – “The one dispeller of darkness, he is luminous, a light-maker; Gotama of vast wisdom, Gotama of vast intelligence.” 108. He who taught me the Dhamma, visible here and now, timeless; the destruction of craving, without affliction, whose equal is found nowhere. "He who taught me the Dhamma," thus. "He" means that Blessed One, self-existent, without a teacher, who by himself fully awakened to the truths in doctrines unheard before, and there attained omniscience and mastery in the powers. "Taught the Dhamma," thus. "Dhamma" means beautiful in the beginning, beautiful in the middle, beautiful in the end, with meaning, with letter, entirely complete, perfectly pure holy life, the four truths... in the establishment… and so on… the Noble Eightfold Path, and Nibbana, and the path leading to Nibbana, he explained, taught, made known, established, revealed, analyzed, made clear, proclaimed – he who taught me the Dhamma. "Visible here and now, timeless" means visible here and now, timeless, inviting inspection, leading inwards, to be experienced individually by the wise – thus, visible here and now. Or else, whoever cultivates the Noble Eightfold Path in this very life, immediately, without interval, attains the fruit, finds it, obtains it – thus also visible here and now. "Timeless" means: just as people, having given money for a period, do not receive it immediately, but await the time, this Dhamma is not so. Whoever cultivates the Noble Eightfold Path in this very life, immediately, without interval, attains the fruit, finds it, obtains it, not in another place, not in another world. Thus, timeless – visible here and now, timeless. "The destruction of craving, without affliction." Craving means craving for forms… and so on… craving for mental objects. Destruction of craving means the destruction of craving, the destruction of lust, the destruction of hatred, the destruction of delusion, the destruction of destinations, the destruction of rebirths, the destruction of re-linking, the destruction of existence, the destruction of transmigration, the destruction of the cycle (of rebirth). "Without affliction" means: afflictions are called defilements, and aggregates, and volitional formations. The abandoning of afflictions, the calming of afflictions, the relinquishing of afflictions, the tranquilizing of afflictions, the deathless, Nibbana – thus, the destruction of craving, without affliction. "For which there is no comparison anywhere." For which means: for Nibbana. There is no comparison means: there is no comparison, there is no analogy, there is no likeness, there is no counterpart, it does not exist, it is not found, it is not perceived. Anywhere means: anywhere, in anything, in any place, whether internally or externally, or both internally and externally – for which there is no comparison anywhere. Therefore, the Elder Pingiya said – “He who taught me the Dhamma, Visible here and now, timeless; The destruction of craving, without affliction, For which there is no comparison anywhere.” 109. Why then did you separate from him, even for a moment, Pingiya; From Gotama, the widely wise? ṇā, Gotama of vast wisdom. "Why have you departed from him?" means, "Why have you departed from the Buddha, gone away, gone forth, become separated?"—"Why have you departed from him?" "Even for a moment, Piṅgiya," means, "even for a moment, an instant, a flash, a breath, a period of time"—"even for a moment." "Piṅgiya" means Bāvarī addresses his grandson by name. "Gotama of vast knowledge" means, "Gotama of vast knowledge, of knowledge and insight, whose banner is wisdom, whose crest is wisdom, whose dominion is wisdom, who is rich in investigation, rich in thorough investigation, rich in scrutiny, whose nature is thorough scrutiny, who dwells in distinction, who is characterized by that, abundant in that, reverent of that, inclined to that, tending to that, leaning to that, devoted to that, whose dominion is that"—"Gotama of vast knowledge." "Gotama of vast wisdom" means, "vast" is said of the earth. The Blessed One is endowed with wisdom that is like the earth, extensive and widespread. "Wisdom" is said of discernment. That wisdom, understanding... (etc.)... non-delusion, investigation of phenomena, right view. The Blessed One is endowed, fully endowed, approached, fully approached, attained, fully attained, possessed of this wisdom, this discernment. Therefore, the Buddha is of excellent wisdom—"Gotama of vast wisdom." Therefore, that brahmin said: "Why have you departed from him, Even for a moment, Piṅgiya; Gotama of vast knowledge, Gotama of vast wisdom?" 110. Who taught you the Dhamma, Visible here and now, timeless; The destruction of craving, without affliction, To which there is nowhere an equal. "Who taught you the Dhamma" means, "that Blessed One... (etc.)... and who attained omniscience there, and mastery over the powers." "Taught the Dhamma" means, "explained, taught, proclaimed, established, revealed, analyzed, made clear, made manifest the Dhamma, which is good in the beginning, good in the middle... (etc.)... and Nibbāna and the path leading to Nibbāna"—"who taught you the Dhamma." "Visible here and now, timeless" means, "visible here and now, timeless, inviting inspection, leading inwards, to be experienced individually by the wise"—thus "visible here and now." Or, "who cultivates the Noble Eightfold Path in this very life," of that path, immediately, without delay, one attains the fruit, finds it, receives it— thus it is visible here and now. Timeless, just as people, having given timely wealth, do not receive it immediately, they await a time, this Dhamma is not so. Whoever in this very life cultivates the noble eightfold path; immediately, without delay, of that path, one attains the fruit, finds it, receives it, not in another place, not in another world, thus it is timeless— visible here and now, timeless. The destruction of craving, free from affliction. Craving means craving for forms… …craving for mental objects. Destruction of craving means the destruction of craving, the destruction of passion, the destruction of hatred, the destruction of delusion, the destruction of destinations, the destruction of rebirths, the destruction of reconnections, the destruction of existence, the destruction of wandering, the destruction of the cycle. Free from affliction means afflictions are called defilements, and aggregates, and volitional formations. The abandoning of afflictions, the calming of afflictions, the relinquishing of afflictions, the appeasement of afflictions, the deathless, Nibbāna— the destruction of craving, free from affliction. For which there is no simile anywhere. For which means for Nibbāna.
