This suffering is a terror to the world, A great terror, An oppression, A torment, A calamity, A danger— Suffering is its great terror. Tell me the restraint for the streams, By what are the streams dammed? “Streams flow everywhere.” “Streams” means the stream of craving, The stream of views, The stream of defilements, The stream of misconduct, The stream of ignorance. “Everywhere” means in all sense-bases. “Flow” means they flow, they ooze, they run, they proceed. By what are streams closed? By what are streams closed, cut off, do not flow, do not leak, do not stream, do not proceed? By what are streams closed? Therefore, that brahmin said: "Streams flow everywhere," (Thus spoke the venerable Ajita) "What is the stopping of streams? Tell the restraint of streams, By what are streams closed?" 4. "Whatever streams there are in the world," (Ajita, said the Blessed One) "Mindfulness is their stopping; I tell the restraint of streams, By wisdom they are closed." "Whatever streams there are in the world" means these streams that have been praised, proclaimed, explained, taught, declared, established, revealed, analyzed, made clear, made manifest by me, namely: the stream of craving, the stream of views, the stream of defilements, the stream of misconduct, the stream of ignorance. "In the world" means in the realm of suffering, in the human realm, in the divine realm, in the realm of aggregates, in the realm of elements, in the realm of sense bases. "With birth as condition, aging and death," for one who knows and sees, by wisdom, these streams are stopped, are cut off, do not flow, do not leak, do not stream, do not proceed. "With the cessation of ignorance, the cessation of formations," ... "With the cessation of formations, the cessation of consciousness," ... "With the cessation of consciousness, the cessation of name-and-form," ... "With the cessation of name-and-form, the cessation of six sense bases," ... "With the cessation of six sense bases, the cessation of contact," ... "With the cessation of contact, the cessation of feeling," ... "With the cessation of feeling, the cessation of craving," ... "With the cessation of craving, the cessation of clinging," ... "With the cessation of clinging, the cessation of becoming," ... "With the cessation of becoming, the cessation of birth," ... "With the cessation of birth, the cessation of aging and death," for one who knows and sees, by wisdom, these streams are stopped, are cut off, do not flow, do not leak, do not stream, do not proceed. "This is suffering," ... "This is the origin of suffering." … "This is the cessation of suffering," "This is the path leading to the cessation of suffering," for one who knows, for one who sees, by wisdom, these streams are closed, are cut off, do not flow, do not leak, do not trickle, do not proceed.
