"Then here I saw a dart" means: "Then" is a conjunction... and so on... it indicates sequence of words – this is "then." "Here" means: among beings. "Dart" means: seven darts – the dart of lust, the dart of hatred, the dart of delusion, the dart of conceit, the dart of wrong view, the dart of sorrow, the dart of doubt. "I saw" means: I saw, I beheld, I perceived, I penetrated – this is "then here I saw a dart." "Difficult to see, lodged in the heart" means: "Difficult to see" means: difficult to see, difficult to behold, difficult to perceive, difficult to understand, difficult to comprehend, difficult to penetrate – this is "difficult to see." "Lodged in the heart" means: "heart" is called mind. That which is mind, thought, mind... Not the heart, the pure mind, mind-base, mind-faculty, consciousness, aggregate of consciousness, the mind-consciousness element arising from it. "Residing in the heart" means: dependent on the heart, dependent on the mind, dependent on the mind, going along with the mind, co-arisen, intermingled, associated, single in arising, single in cessation, single in base, single in object – hard to see, residing in the heart. Therefore the Blessed One said: "When disturbed at the end, seeing, my discontent arose; Then there I saw the dart, hard to see, residing in the heart." 174. By which dart afflicted, he runs about in all directions; Having extracted that very dart, he does not run about, he does not sink down. "By which dart afflicted, he runs about in all directions." That lust, attachment, inclination, compliance, delight-lust, attachment of the mind, ... covetousness, greed, root of unwholesome – this is the dart of lust. What is the dart of hatred? "He did me harm" – thus ill-will arises. "He does me harm" – thus ill-will arises. "He will do me harm" – thus ill-will arises... fierceness, surliness, displeasure of the mind – this is the dart of hatred. What is the dart of delusion? Ignorance of suffering, ... ignorance of the path leading to the cessation of suffering, ignorance of the past, ignorance of the future, ignorance of both past and future, ignorance of dependent co-arising and dependently arisen phenomena. Whatever of such a kind: not seeing, not understanding, not comprehending, not awakening, not penetrating, not grasping, not comprehending fully, not reflecting properly, not reviewing, not making it evident, dullness of intellect, foolishness, delusion, great delusion, utter delusion, ignorance, flood of ignorance, yoke of ignorance, underlying tendency of ignorance, obsession of ignorance, fetter of ignorance, delusion, root of unwholesome – this is the dart of delusion. What is the dart of conceit? "I am superior" – thus conceit. "I am equal" – ''I am'' conceit, ''I am inferior'' conceit. Whatever such conceit, presumption, presumptuousness, elation, elevation, banner, grasping, desire for a banner of the mind – this is the dart of conceit. What is the dart of wrong view? The twenty-fold personality view, the ten-fold wrong view, the ten-fold view of grasping at extremes. Whatever such view, view-point, thicket of views, wilderness of views, wriggling of views, flickering of views, fetter of views, grasping, clinging, adherence, obsession, wrong path, false way, wrongness, heretical ground, grasping of perversion, grasping of reversal, grasping of distortion, wrong grasping, grasping of ''reality'' in what is unreal, as far as the sixty-two views – this is the dart of wrong view. What is the dart of sorrow? For one afflicted by loss of relatives, or afflicted by loss due to illness, or afflicted by loss of wealth, or afflicted by loss of virtue, or afflicted by loss of view, or endowed with some other loss, or afflicted by some other painful phenomenon, sorrow, lamentation, lamenting, inner sorrow, inner lamentation, inner burning, inner intense burning, mental anguish, dejection – this is the dart of sorrow. What is the dart of doubt? Doubt about suffering, doubt about the origin of suffering, doubt about the cessation of suffering, doubt about the path leading to the cessation of suffering, doubt about the past, doubt about the future, doubt about the past and future, doubt about conditioned co-arisen phenomena. Whatever such doubt, doubting, being in doubt, uncertainty, perplexity, two-fold state, two-fold path, suspicion, grasping at uncertainty, hesitation, wavering, lack of penetration, being stunned, mental defilement – this is the dart of doubt. By which dart one is overcome, one runs in all directions. Overcome, pierced, afflicted, overwhelmed, deluded, endowed with the dart of lust, one performs misconduct by body, one performs misconduct by speech, one performs misconduct by mind. He acts, he even kills living beings, he even takes what is not given, he even breaks into houses, he even plunders, he even commits single-house robbery, he even stands on the highway, he even goes to another's wife, he even speaks falsely; thus, pierced, wounded, struck, overcome, overwhelmed, afflicted by the dart of lust, he runs, he wanders, he roams, he transmigrates. Or else, pierced, wounded, struck, overcome, overwhelmed, afflicted by the dart of lust, seeking wealth, he embarks on a great ocean in a ship. Oppressed by cold, oppressed by heat, afflicted by the touch of gnats, mosquitoes, wind, sun, and creeping things, wasting away, dying of hunger and thirst, he goes to Tigumba, he goes to Takkola, he goes to Takkasīla, he goes to Kāḷamukha, he goes to Purapūra, he goes to Vesuṅga, he goes to Verāpatha, he goes to Java, he goes to Tāmali, he goes to Vaṅka, he goes to Eḷabandhana, he goes to Suvaṇṇakūṭa, he goes to Suvaṇṇabhūmi, he goes to Tambapaṇṇi, he goes to Suppādaka, he goes to Bhārukaccha, he goes to Suraṭṭha, he goes to Bhaṅgaloka, he goes to Bhaṅgaṇa, he goes to Paramabhaṅgaṇa, he goes to Yona, he goes to Paramayona, he goes to Vinaka, he goes to Mūlapada, he goes to Marukantāra, he goes to Jaṇṇupatha, he goes to Ajapatha, he goes to Meṇḍapatha, he goes to Saṅkupatha, he goes to Chattapatha, he goes to Vaṃsapatha, he goes to Sakuṇapatha, he goes to Mūsikapatha, he goes to Daripatha, he goes to Vettācāra; seeking, he does not obtain, and he experiences suffering and sorrow rooted in not obtaining, seeking, he obtains, and having obtained, he experiences suffering and sorrow rooted in guarding, thinking: "How can kings not take my wealth, nor thieves take it, nor fire burn it, nor water carry it away?" lest heirs who are not dear should take them away.” As he thus guards and protects, those possessions are lost. He experiences the suffering and sorrow rooted in that loss. Thus, pierced, struck, afflicted, overwhelmed, deluded, possessed by the dart of lust, he runs, he rushes, he hastens, he wanders on. By the dart of hatred… By the dart of delusion… By the dart of conceit, pierced, struck, afflicted, overwhelmed, deluded, possessed, he performs misconduct by body, he performs misconduct by speech, he performs misconduct by mind. He even kills living beings, he even takes what is not given, he even breaks into houses, he even commits robbery, he even commits highway robbery, he even stands on the highways, he even goes to another's wife, he even speaks falsehoods. Thus, pierced, struck, afflicted, overwhelmed, deluded, possessed by the dart of conceit, he runs, he rushes, he hastens, he wanders on. By the dart of wrong view, pierced, struck, afflicted, overwhelmed, deluded, possessed, he is naked, of loose conduct, licking his hands, not one to come when asked, not one to stop when asked; he does not accept food brought to him, nor food prepared specially, nor food by invitation. He does not accept from the mouth of a pot, nor from the mouth of a pan, nor from between two cross-sticks, nor from between a stick and a bowl, nor from between a pestle and a mortar, nor from two people eating, nor from a pregnant woman, nor from a nursing woman, nor from a woman with a man between her and him, nor from a collection of food, nor where a dog is standing, nor where flies are swarming. He does not drink fish, nor meat, nor liquor, nor strong drink, nor rice gruel. He is one who eats from one house, or one mouthful; or from two houses, or two mouthfuls… or from seven houses, or seven mouthfuls. He sustains himself on one offering, or on two offerings… or on seven offerings. He eats food once every day, or once every two days… or once every seven days. Thus, he is devoted to the practice of eating food at regular intervals, even once every half month. he lives. Thus, pierced by the dart of views, wounded, struck, overcome, bewildered, possessed, he runs, he scurries, he wanders, he transmigrates. Or else, pierced by the dart of views, wounded, struck, overcome, bewildered, possessed, he is one who eats greens, or one who eats wild rice, or one who eats uncultivated rice, or one who eats moss, or one who eats rice bran, or one who eats rice gruel, or one who eats rice scum, or one who eats oil cake, or one who eats sesame, or one who eats grass, or one who eats cow dung, he subsists on forest roots and fruits, he lives on fallen fruits. He wears coarse hempen clothes, he wears coarse woven clothes, he wears clothes from charnel grounds, he wears rag-robes, he wears tree-bark clothes, he wears antelope hides, he wears strips of antelope hide, he wears kusa-grass garments, he wears bark garments, he wears wood-shaving garments, he wears hair blankets, he wears owl's wings. He is one who plucks out hair and beard, he lives devoted to the practice of plucking out hair and beard. He is one who stands upright, rejecting a seat,
