Not envious, not greedy, unagitated, equal in all ways. What is envy? Here, some individual is envious; he envies, grudges, binds himself with envy regarding others' gains, honors, respect, reverence, salutations, and offerings. Such envy, the act of envy, jealousy, being jealous, grudging, being grudging – this is called envy. For whom this envy is abandoned, uprooted... burnt by the fire of knowledge, he is called not envious. Not greedy. Greed is called craving. That passion, attachment... covetousness, greed, the root of unwholesome states. For whom this greed is abandoned, uprooted... burnt by the fire of knowledge, he is called not greedy. He is not greedy for forms, for sounds... for phenomena seen, heard, sensed, or cognized; he is not attached, not infatuated, not obsessed. He is free from greed, gone from greed, abandoned greed, vomited greed, released from greed, given up greed, relinquished greed. He is free from passion, gone from passion, abandoned passion, vomited passion, released from passion, given up passion, relinquished passion. He is quenched, cooled, become cool, experiencing happiness, dwelling with a divine self. He is not harsh, not greedy. He is unagitated, everywhere equal. Agitation is called craving. That passion, attachment… greed, covetousness, unwholesome root. For whom this agitation, this craving, is abandoned, uprooted… burnt by the fire of knowledge, he is called unagitated. Because agitation is abandoned, he is unagitated. He is not shaken by gain, not shaken by loss, not shaken by fame, not shaken by disrepute, not shaken by praise, not shaken by blame, not shaken by pleasure, not shaken by pain, he does not waver, does not tremble, does not shake, does not thoroughly shake—he is unagitated. Everywhere equal means all twelve sense bases. Eye and forms… mind and mental objects. When for him, in internal and external sense bases, desire and passion are abandoned, uprooted, made like a palm-stump, made non-existent, not liable to arise in the future, he is called everywhere equal. He is such everywhere, impartial everywhere, equanimous everywhere—unagitated, everywhere equal. I declare his advantage, being asked by one unshaken. Being asked, requested, implored, pleased by an unshaken person, I declare these four advantages. That one who is not harsh, not greedy, unagitated, everywhere equal—I declare, explain… make known—I declare his advantage, being asked by one unshaken. Therefore the Blessed One said: “Not harsh, not greedy, Unagitated, everywhere equal; I declare his advantage, Being asked by one unshaken.” 188. For one unagitated, knowing, There is no doubt whatsoever; He, abstaining from violence, Sees safety everywhere. For one unagitated, knowing. Agitation is called craving. That passion, attachment… greed, covetousness, unwholesome root. For whom this agitation, this craving, is abandoned, uprooted… burnt by the fire of knowledge, he is called unagitated. Because agitation is abandoned, he is unagitated. He is not shaken by gain, not shaken by loss, not shaken by fame, not shaken by disrepute, not shaken by praise, not shaken by blame, not shaken by pleasure, not Trembles, even in suffering, does not tremble, does not waver, does not quake, does not greatly quake, does not thoroughly quake – of the untrembling one. Of the one who understands: knowing, thoroughly knowing, understanding, discerning, penetrating. "All formations are impermanent" – knowing, thoroughly knowing, understanding, discerning, penetrating. "All formations are suffering"... (and so on) "Whatever is of the nature to arise, all that is of the nature to cease" – knowing, thoroughly knowing, understanding, discerning, penetrating – of the untrembling one who understands. There is no accumulation. Accumulations are called: meritorious formations, demeritorious formations, imperturbable formations. When meritorious formations, and demeritorious formations, and imperturbable formations are abandoned, uprooted, made like a palm-stump, brought to non-existence, not liable to arise in the future; by this much, accumulations do not exist, are not present, are not found, are not perceived. They are abandoned, utterly cut off, calmed, tranquilized, incapable of future arising, burnt by the fire of knowledge – there is no accumulation. He has ceased from exertion. Exertion is called: meritorious formations, demeritorious formations, imperturbable formations. When meritorious formations, and demeritorious formations, and imperturbable formations are abandoned, uprooted, made like a palm-stump, brought to non-existence, not liable to arise in the future; by this much, from striving, from exertion, he is ceased, abstained, completely abstained, gone forth, escaped, completely liberated, disjoined, he dwells with an unbounded mind – he has ceased from exertion. He sees safety everywhere. Greed is fearful, hatred is fearful, delusion is fearful... (and so on) defilements are fearful. Due to the abandonment of fearful greed... (and so on) due to the abandonment of fearful defilements, he sees safety everywhere, he sees fearlessness everywhere, he sees freedom from affliction everywhere, he sees freedom from disturbance everywhere, he sees freedom from danger everywhere, he sees freedom from annoyance everywhere – he sees safety everywhere. They The Blessed One said: For one who knows the unmoving, there is no doubt whatsoever; abstaining from violence, he sees security everywhere. 189. Not in equals, not in inferiors, not in superiors does the sage speak; peaceful, he is free from envy, he does not grasp, nor does he reject. Thus said the Blessed One. "Not in equals, not in inferiors, not in superiors does the sage speak." "Sage" means. Wisdom is called silence... having overcome the net of attachment, he is a sage. "I am superior" or "I am equal" or "I am inferior" – he does not say, does not declare, does not speak, does not explain, does not express – thus, "not in equals, not in inferiors, not in superiors does the sage speak." "Peaceful, he is free from envy." "Peaceful" means peaceful because lust is calmed, tranquilized; hatred... delusion... all unwholesome volitional formations are calmed, tranquilized, pacified, extinguished, cooled, gone, subsided – thus peaceful, very peaceful, utterly peaceful, cooled, subsided – "peaceful." "He is free from envy" means. There are five kinds of envy: envy regarding dwelling... grasping is called envy. He for whom this envy is abandoned, uprooted... burned by the fire of knowledge, he is called free from envy, gone from envy, given up envy, vomited envy, released from envy, abandoned envy, rejected envy – thus, "peaceful, he is free from envy." "He does not grasp, nor does he reject, thus said the Blessed One." "He does not grasp" means he does not grasp form, does not cling, does not take, does not seize, does not adhere; feeling... perception... volitional formations... consciousness... destiny... rebirth... re-linking... existence... samsara... the cycle – he does not grasp, does not cling, does not take, does not seize, does not adhere – thus, "he does not grasp." "Nor does he reject" means he does not abandon form, does not dispel, does not make an end of, does not bring to naught; feeling... perception... volitional formations... consciousness... destiny... rebirth... re-linking... existence... samsara... the cycle – he does not abandon, does not dispel, does not make an end of, does not bring to naught. "Blessed One" means respect. an appellation… a true designation, namely, the Blessed One. Therefore the Blessed One said: Not among equals, Not among inferiors, Not among superiors, Does the sage speak; Peaceful is he, Free from envy, He neither grasps Nor rejects. The fifteenth explanation of the Attadaṇḍa Sutta.
