English
Whatever is delimited, bounded, confined, circumscribed, grasped, and called 'mine' by way of craving. "This is mine, that is mine, this much is mine, so much is mine; my forms, sounds, smells, tastes, tangibles; my carpets, cloaks, male and female slaves, goats, sheep, chickens, pigs, elephants, cattle, horses, mares, fields, land, gold, silver, villages, towns, royal capitals, kingdoms, provinces, treasuries, storehouses; even the entire great earth" – one calls it 'mine' by way of craving. Whatever of the one hundred and eight modes of craving's wandering, this is craving-mine-ness. What is view-mine-ness? The twenty-fold view of a permanent self, the ten-fold wrong view, the ten-fold view that grasps at extremes; such a view, a view-point, a thicket of views, a wilderness of views, a wriggling of views, a wavering of views, a fetter of views, a grasping, a clinging, an adherence, a perversion, a wrong path, a mistaken way, a wrongness, a sectarian ground, a wrong apprehension, a perverse apprehension, a distorted apprehension, a mistaken apprehension, an apprehension of "reality in the unreal." Whatever of the sixty-two views, this is view-mine-ness. "See them struggling, clinging to what they call 'mine'" means: They struggle even when suspecting the loss of what they call 'mine'; they struggle when it is being taken away; they struggle when it has been taken away. They struggle even when suspecting the change of what they call 'mine'; they struggle when it is changing; they struggle when it has changed. They struggle, they struggle greatly, they struggle completely, they struggle violently, they tremble, they tremble greatly, they tremble completely. Thus struggling, struggling greatly, struggling completely, struggling violently... Trembling, Shaking, Quivering, Thoroughly quivering, See, Behold, Observe, Contemplate, Investigate – See them struggling in what they cling to as 'mine'. Like fish in shallow water, with the stream exhausted. Just as fish in shallow water, in little water, when the water is exhausted, being pursued, snatched up, eaten by crows, or by kites, or by herons, struggle, struggle greatly, struggle together, struggle violently, tremble, shake, thoroughly shake; Even so, beings, fearing the loss of what they cling to as 'mine', struggle; even when it is being taken, they struggle; even when it is taken, they struggle. Fearing the change of what they cling to as 'mine', they struggle; even when it is changing, they struggle; even when it has changed, they struggle, struggle greatly, struggle together, struggle violently, tremble, shake, thoroughly shake – Like fish in shallow water, with the stream exhausted. Having seen this, one should wander without 'mine'. Having seen this danger, having seen, having observed, having weighed, having concluded, having made clear, having made manifest in clingings to 'mine' – having seen this. One should wander without 'mine'. There are two kinds of 'mine-ness': 'mine-ness' of craving and 'mine-ness' of views... this is 'mine-ness' of craving... this is 'mine-ness' of views. Having abandoned the 'mine-ness' of craving, having relinquished the 'mine-ness' of views, not making the eye 'mine', not making the ear 'mine', not making the nose 'mine', not making the tongue 'mine', not making the body 'mine', not making the mind 'mine'; not making forms 'mine'... sounds... smells... tastes... tactile objects... mental objects... family... group... dwelling... gain... fame... praise... happiness... robes... almsfood... lodging... requisites for the sick... sense-sphere realm... form realm... formless realm... sense-sphere existence... form existence... formless existence... existence of perception... existence of non-perception... existence of neither perception nor non-perception... one-constituent existence... four-constituent existence... five-constituent existence... the past... the future... the present... things seen, heard, sensed, and cognized – not making them 'mine', not grasping, not clinging, not adhering, one should wander, one should dwell, one should move. one should live, maintain, pass time, make a living – seeing even this, one should live without 'mine'. Not making attachment to existences. "Existences" means: sense-sphere existence, form-sphere existence, formless-sphere existence. "Attachment" is called craving. That which is lust, attachment... covetousness, greed, a root of unwholesome states. Not making attachment to existences. Not making attachment to existences, not making desire, affection, lust, patience, not producing, not generating, not bringing forth, not causing to arise – this is not making attachment to existences. Therefore the Blessed One said: "See those who cling to 'mine' struggling, like fish in a shallow pool, with a dried-up stream; Seeing even this, one should live without 'mine', not making attachment to existences." 13. Having removed desire for both extremes, having fully understood contact, not clinging; Not doing that which is blamed by oneself, the wise one is not stained by what is seen and heard. "Having removed desire for both extremes." "Extremes" means: contact is one extreme, the origin of contact is the second extreme; the past is one extreme, the future is the second extreme; pleasant feeling is one extreme, painful feeling is the second extreme; name is one extreme, form is the second extreme; the six internal sense bases are one extreme, the six external sense bases are the second extreme; the existing body is one extreme, the origin of the existing body is the second extreme. "Desire" means: that which is desire for sensual pleasures, sensual lust, delight in sensual pleasures, craving for sensual pleasures, affection for sensual pleasures, feverishness for sensual pleasures, infatuation with sensual pleasures, clinging to sensual pleasures, the flood of sensual pleasures, the yoke of sensual pleasures, the clinging to sensual pleasures, the hindrance of sensual desire. "Having removed desire for both extremes" means: for both extremes, having removed, having dispelled, having abandoned, having driven away, having made an end of, having brought to non-existence, desire – this is "having removed desire for both extremes." "Having fully understood contact, not clinging." "Contact" means: eye-contact, ear-contact, nose-contact, tongue-contact, body-contact, mind-contact; conceptual contact; impingement contact; contact that is felt as pleasant, contact that is felt as painful, contact that is felt as neither painful nor pleasant; wholesome contact Unwholesome contact, indeterminate contact, Sense-sphere contact, form-sphere contact, formless-sphere contact, Empty contact, signless contact, desireless contact, Worldly contact, supramundane contact, Past contact, future contact, present contact. Whatever such contact, Touching, Contacting, The state of having contacted – This is called contact. "By fully understanding contact" means having fully understood contact through three full understandings: by the full understanding of knowing, by the full understanding of scrutinizing, by the full understanding of abandoning. Which is the full understanding of knowing? One knows contact: "This is eye-contact, This is ear-contact, This is nose-contact, This is tongue-contact, This is body-contact, This is mind-contact, This is conceptual contact, This is impingement contact, This is contact leading to pleasant feeling, This is contact leading to painful feeling, This is contact leading to neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling, This is wholesome contact, This is unwholesome contact, This is indeterminate contact, This is sense-sphere contact, This is form-sphere contact, This is formless-sphere contact, This is empty contact, This is signless contact, This is desireless contact, This is worldly contact, This is supramundane contact, This is past contact, This is future contact, This is present contact." One knows, one sees. This is the full understanding of knowing. Which is the full understanding of scrutinizing? Having thus known, one scrutinizes contact. One scrutinizes it: as impermanent, as suffering, as a disease, as a boil, as a dart, as a bane, as an affliction, as alien, as disintegrating, as a calamity, as a misfortune, as fear, as a danger, as trembling, as breaking up, as unstable, as no protection, as no shelter, as no refuge, as empty, as vain, as void, as not self, as disadvantage, as subject to change, as without essence, as the root of ill, as a killer, as destruction, as with taints, as conditioned, as Māra's bait, as subject to birth, aging, sickness, death, as subject to sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair, as subject to defilement, as arising, as passing away, as gratification, as disadvantage, as escape. This is the full understanding of scrutinizing. What is the full understanding of abandoning? Having thus resolved, one abandons desire-and-lust for contact, removes it, makes an end of it, brings it to naught. This was said by the Blessed One: "Monks, whatever desire-and-lust there is for contacts, abandon that. Thus, that contact will be abandoned, uprooted, made like a palm-stump, brought to naught, not liable to arise in the future." This is the full understanding of abandoning. By fully understanding contact. Having fully understood contact by these three full understandings. Not clinging. Clinging is called craving. Whatever lust, attachment... greed, covetousness, root of unwholesome. For whom this clinging is abandoned, uprooted, calmed, tranquilized, incapable of future arising, burnt by the fire of knowledge, he is called not clinging. He is not clinging to forms, not clinging to sounds, not clinging to smells, not clinging to tastes, not clinging to tangibles, not clinging to family, not clinging to groups, not clinging to dwellings, not clinging to gain, not clinging to fame, not clinging to praise, not clinging to pleasure,
