One aged, one dead. 156. Seeing them, I was greatly agitated, Disgusted with the body; I stood, weary of existence, Then the Leader said to me: 157. “Nandā, behold this body, Sick, impure, putrid; Exuding, oozing, Delighted in by fools. 158. Cultivate the mind on impurity, One-pointed and well-composed; As this is, so is that; As that is, so is this. 159. Thus contemplating this, Diligent day and night; Then by your own wisdom, You will penetrate and be free.” 160. For me, diligent, Investigating properly; This body, as it truly is, Was seen, inside and out. 161. Then I was disgusted with the body, And detached from within; Diligent, disjoined, I am peaceful, extinguished. 162. I am master of psychic powers, And of the divine ear element; I am master of the knowledge Of penetrating others' minds, Great Sage. 163. I know my past lives, My divine eye is purified; All defilements are destroyed, There is no more rebirth now. 164. In meaning, doctrine, and language, And likewise in ready wit; My knowledge, Great Sage… Hero, it has arisen in your presence. 165. My defilements are burnt... I dwell without taints. 166. Welcome indeed it was for me... The Buddha's teaching has been done. 167. The four analytical knowledges... The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the bhikkhuni Abhirūpanandā spoke these verses. The Sixth Apadāna of the Elder Abhirūpanandā. 7. The Apadāna of the Elder Aḍḍhakāsī 168. In this auspicious eon, the kinsman of Brahmā, greatly renowned, named Kassapa by clan, the foremost of speakers, appeared. 169. Then I, having gone forth, in the teaching of that Buddha, was restrained in the Pātimokkha, and in the five faculties. 170. And moderate in food, devoted to wakefulness, I, dwelling, devoted to practice, a bhikkhuni free from taints. 171. I, with an evil mind, reviled, "You are a courtesan!" I said then. By that evil kamma, in hell I suffered. 172. By the remainder of that kamma, I was born in a courtesan's family. Many times subservient, and in my last birth. 173. In Kāsī, born in a merchant's family, I, by the power of my holy life, like a nymph among the devas, was endowed with beauty. 174. Having seen me, beautiful to behold, in the excellent city of Giribbaja, they placed me into the state of a courtesan, by the power of my reviling. 175. That I, having heard the true Dhamma, taught by the foremost Buddha, endowed with previous wholesome tendencies, went forth into homelessness. 176. For the purpose of that ordination, going to the Victor's presence, on the road, having heard a rogue standing (reviling me), I obtained ordination by messenger. 177. All kamma is exhausted, wholesome and unwholesome likewise. Completely crossed over saṃsāra, and the state of a courtesan is ended. 178. And in psychic powers I am master, of the divine ear element. Of the knowledge of penetrating others' minds, I am master, O Great Sage. 179. Former existences I know, the divine eye is purified. All taints exhausted, there is not now rebirth. 180. In meaning, Dhamma, and language, and likewise in analytical knowledge, my knowledge, O Great Hero, has arisen in your presence. near. 181. “My defilements are burnt… I dwell without taints. 182. “My coming was truly good… The Buddha’s teaching has been done. 183. “The four analytical knowledges… The Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed, the bhikkhuni Aḍḍhakāsī spoke these verses. The Seventh, the Aḍḍhakāsītherī Apadāna. 8. The Puṇṇikātherī Apadāna 184. “Of the Blessed One Vipassī, Of Sikhī and Vessabhū; Of the sage Kakusandha, And Koṇāgamana, the leader. 185. “And of Kassapa, the Buddha, Having gone forth in the teaching; A bhikkhuni endowed with virtue, Skilful, with senses restrained. 186. “Very learned, a holder of the Dhamma, An inquirer into the meaning of the Dhamma; A learner of the Dhammas, A listener, a close attendant. 187. “Preaching among the people, I was in the Victor’s teaching; By that great learning, I became conceited and despised others. 188. “And in this last existence, In the excellent city of Sāvatthī; In the house of Anāthapiṇḍika, I was born as a pot-maid. 189. “Having gone to fetch water, I saw a brahmin, Sotthiya; Suffering from cold in the water, Seeing him, I said this. 190. “‘I, a water-carrier, in the cold, Always descend into the water; Fearing the stick of my masters, Afflicted by fear of harsh words. 191. “‘Of whom, brahmin, are you afraid, Always descending into the water; With trembling limbs, You feel the cold intensely.’ 192. “‘Knowing me, sister Puṇṇikā, You indeed question me; Doing wholesome deeds, Expelling the evil done. 193. “‘Whoever, old or young, Commits an evil deed; By sprinkling with water, He is released from evil deeds.’ 194. “To him, as he was coming out, I explained A verse connected with the meaning of the Dhamma; And hearing that, he was deeply stirred, And became worthy of going forth. 195. “Completing less than a hundred, Since I was born in a slave family; Therefore, Puṇṇā is my name, And my freedom…” they did. 196. Having then permitted the merchant, I went forth into homelessness; Not long after, I attained arahantship. 197. I am skilled in psychic powers, and in the divine ear element; I am skilled in the knowledge of others' minds, O Great Sage. 198. I know my past lives, my divine eye is purified; All defilements are destroyed, there is no more rebirth. 199. In meaning, doctrine, language, and in ready wit as well; My knowledge is pure and clear, by the power of the Best of Buddhas. 200. By cultivation, great wisdom, by learning, learned; By pride, low-born, but action is not lost. 201. My defilements are burnt away… …I dwell without defilements. 202. It was a good welcome for me… …the Buddha's teaching has been done. 203. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the bhikkhuni Puṇṇikā spoke these verses. The Eighth: The Apadāna of Theri Puṇṇikā. 9. The Apadāna of Theri Ambapālī 204. The great sage named Phussa, whose rays were like a garland; I was his sister, born into a royal family. 205. Having heard his Dhamma, with a mind greatly serene; Having given a great gift, I aspired to beauty. 206. Thirty-one aeons ago from this, Sikhī, the leader of the world; The light of the world arose, the Conqueror, refuge of the three worlds. 207. At that time, in the delightful city of Aruṇa, born into a brahmin family; With a mind disturbed, angered, I cursed a bhikkhuni. 208. "You are a courtesan, immoral, a defiler of the Conqueror's teaching!" Having reviled her thus, by that evil deed. 209. I went to a terrible hell, afflicted with great suffering; Having fallen from there, among humans, I was reborn as an ascetic. 210. For ten thousand births, I became a courtesan; I could not escape that evil, like one who has eaten deadly poison. 211. I practiced the holy life… I served Kassapa, in the Victor's Dispensation. By the ripening of that action, I was born in the deva realm. 212. When my last existence arrived, I was reborn spontaneously. Born between mango branches, therefore I was Ambapālī. 213. Surrounded by crores of beings, I went forth in the Victor's Dispensation. I have attained the unmoving state, a true daughter of the Buddha. 214. I am master of psychic powers, and of the purification of the ear-element. I am master of the knowledge of others' minds, O Great Sage. 215. I know my past lives, my divine eye is purified. All defilements are exhausted, there is no more rebirth now. 216. In meaning, in doctrine, in language, and likewise in ready wit; My knowledge is pure, immaculate, by the power of the Best of Buddhas. 217. My defilements are burnt away… …I dwell without taints. 218. My coming was indeed welcome… …the Buddha's teaching has been done. 219. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed did the bhikkhuni Ambapālī utter these verses. The Ninth Apadāna of Ambapālī Therī. 10. The Apadāna of Pesalā Therī 220. In this auspicious eon, the great glorious kinsman of Brahmā, named Kassapa by clan, the best of speakers, arose. 221. In the excellent city of Sāvatthī, I was born into a lay follower's family. Having seen that best of Victors, and heard his teaching, 222. Having gone for refuge to that hero, I undertook the precepts. Once that great hero, in a great assembly of people, 223. That bull among men proclaimed his own perfect enlightenment, regarding the previously unheard doctrines, concerning suffering and so forth. 224. Eye, knowledge, and wisdom, and the light of insight arose in me. Having heard that, having grasped it, I questioned the bhikkhus. 225. By that well-done action, and by my aspirations, Having abandoned the human body, I went to Tāvatiṃsa. 226. And now in my last existence, I was born into a great merchant's family. Having approached the Buddha, the good Dhamma, having heard that which is connected with the truths, 227. Having gone forth, very soon, the truth pondering meanings; Having exhausted all defilements, I attained Arahantship. And I am master of psychic powers, of the divine ear element; Of the knowledge of others’ minds, I am master, Great Sage. I know past lives, the divine eye is purified; All defilements are exhausted, there is no more rebirth now. In meaning, Dhamma, and language, and likewise in ready wit; My knowledge is pure and clean, by the power of the Supreme Buddha. My defilements are burnt away, all existences are uprooted; Like a great elephant, having cut the bonds, I dwell without defilements. Indeed, it was a good coming for me, in the presence of my Buddha; The three knowledges are attained, the Buddha’s teaching is done. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha’s teaching is done. Thus indeed, the nun Pesalā spoke these verses.
