The Conqueror named Padumuttara, One who has gone beyond all phenomena; A hundred thousand aeons ago from now, The Leader arose in that aeon. 83. Then I, in Haṃsavatī, Was born in a minister's family; Shining with various jewels, Prosperous, flourishing, and very wealthy. 84. Having gone with my father, Honored by the great multitude; Having heard the Buddha's Dhamma, I went forth into homelessness. 85. Having gone forth, with my body, I avoided evil deeds; Having abandoned verbal misconduct, I purified my livelihood. 86. Confident in the Buddha and the Dhamma, And with strong respect for the Saṅgha; Engaged in listening to the True Dhamma, Longing to see the Buddha. 87. The foremost among those devoted by faith, I heard a bhikkhuni then; Having aspired to that position, I fulfilled the three trainings. 88. Then the Fortunate One said to me, With a mind full of compassion; ‘Whose faith in the Tathāgata, Is unshakable, well-established; And whose virtue is good, beloved by the Noble Ones, praised. 89. “‘Whoever has faith in the Sangha, and a vision that is upright; They call him not poor, his life is not in vain. 90. “‘Therefore, a wise person should cultivate faith and virtue, serenity and the vision of the Dhamma, remembering the Buddhas’ teaching.’ 91. “Hearing that, I was delighted, and asked about my aspiration; Then the incomparable, immeasurable Leader declared: ‘O virtuous one, devoted to the Buddha, you shall obtain that which is well-wished for. 92. “‘In the hundred-thousandth eon from now, one born in the Okkāka clan, named Gotama by family, will be the Teacher in the world. 93. “‘Among his Dhamma-heirs, his true Dhamma-born children, you will be a female disciple of the Teacher, the mother of Siṅgālaka.’ 94. “Hearing that, filled with joy, I then served the Victor throughout my life, with a mind of loving-kindness, and with practices for the Leader. 95. “By that well-done action, and by those aspirations and intentions, having abandoned my human body, I went to Tāvatiṃsa. 96. “And now, in this last existence, in the excellent city of Giribbaja, I was born into a prosperous merchant family, with a great accumulation of jewels. 97. “My son, named Siṅgālaka, was devoted to wrong paths, entangled in a thicket of views, intent on worshipping the directions. 98. “As he was worshipping the various directions, going to the city for alms, the Buddha, the Leader, seeing him, stood on the road and admonished him. 99. “As he taught the Dhamma, there was a wondrous sound; For two crores of men and women, there was an awakening to the Dhamma. 100. “Then I went to the assembly, and hearing the well-spoken words, I attained the fruit of stream-entry, and went forth into homelessness. 101. “Not long after, eager to see the Buddha, cultivating that recollection, I attained Arahantship. 102. “I always go to see the Buddha; I gaze upon his form, which delights the eyes, yet I am never sated. 103. “His excellent form, born of all perfections, the abode of beauty, I lived, unsatisfied, with what was very impure. 104. The Conqueror, pleased with that quality, placed me at the foremost; the mother of Siṅgālaka, foremost in faith and conviction. 105. I am skilled in psychic powers, and in the divine ear-element; I am skilled in the knowledge of others' minds, O Great Sage. 106. I know my past lives, the divine eye is purified; all defilements are exhausted, there is no more rebirth now. 107. In meaning, in doctrine, in language, and likewise in ready wit; my knowledge, O Great Hero, has arisen in your presence. 108. My defilements are burnt away… I live without defilements. 109. My coming was indeed welcome… the Buddha’s teaching has been done. 110. The four analytical knowledges… the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed did the bhikkhunī Siṅgālamātā utter these verses. The fourth Apadāna of the Elder Siṅgālamātā. 5. The Apadāna of the Elder Sukkā 111. Ninety-one aeons ago, a leader named Vipassī, arose, lovely to behold, one who saw all phenomena. 112. Then I was born in Bandhumatī, in a certain family; having heard the Dhamma of the Sage, I went forth into homelessness. 113. Learned, a holder of the Dhamma, and likewise quick-witted; also a speaker of varied discourses, one who carried out the Conqueror’s teaching. 114. Then, having given a Dhamma talk, for the welfare of many people; having passed away from there, I was reborn in Tusita, glorious. 115. Thirty-one aeons from now, the Conqueror Sikhī, like a flame, shining with glory in the world, arose, the best of speakers. 116. Then too, having gone forth, skilled in the Buddha’s teaching; having illuminated the Conqueror’s words, from there I went to the heaven. 117. In the thirty-first aeon, a leader named Vessabhū, the Great Knower, arose; then too, I was likewise. 118. Having gone forth, a holder of the Dhamma, I illuminated the Conqueror’s teaching; having gone to the city of Maru, delightful, I experienced great bliss. In this auspicious eon, Kakusandha, the supreme Victor, Arose, a refuge for humans; Then too, I was just as before. Having gone forth in the sage's teaching, Illuminating it for as long as I lived; Thence passing away, I went to heaven, To my own abode, as it were. In this very eon, The leader Koṇāgamana; Arose, a refuge for the world, Peaceful, having attained the deathless. Then too, having gone forth, In the teaching of that Such-one; Well-learned, upholders of the Dhamma, I illuminated the Victor's teaching. In this very eon, Kassapa, the supreme sage; Arose, a refuge for the world, Peaceful, gone to the end of death. In the teaching of that hero among men, Having gone forth; Having mastered the true Dhamma, Skilled in questioning. Of good conduct, modest, And skilled in the three trainings; Having given many Dhamma talks, For as long as I lived, O great sage. By the result of that kamma, And by those aspirations; Having abandoned the human body, I went to Tāvatiṃsa. And now, in this last existence, In the excellent city of Giribbaja; Born in a prosperous merchant family, With a great accumulation of jewels. When the leader of the world, Surrounded by a thousand bhikkhus; Approached Rājagaha, Praised by Sakka. ‘The tamed one with the tamed, With the ancient ascetics, The liberated one with the liberated; The Blessed One, golden-hued, Entered Rājagaha.’ Seeing that power of the Buddha, And hearing the accumulation of virtues; Having made my mind clear in the Buddha, I honored him to the best of my ability. And at a later time, In the presence of Dhammadinnā; Having gone forth from home, I went forth into homelessness. As my hair was being cut, I burnt away the defilements; I grasped the entire teaching, Soon after going forth. Then I taught the Dhamma, In a great gathering of people; As the Dhamma was being taught, There was an penetration of the Dhamma. For many thousands of beings, That knowledge... greatly astonished; The yakkha is well-pleased with me, having wandered to Giribbaja. 135. "What have the people in Rājagaha done to me, they act as if they've drunk honey; Who do not attend to Sukkā, who teaches the deathless state. 136. "That which is irresistible, a pure, unmixed essence; The wise, I think, drink it, like a traveler drinks from a cloud. 137. "I am skilled in psychic powers, and in the divine ear element; I am skilled in the knowledge of others' minds, O Great Sage. 138. "I know my past lives, the divine eye is purified; All defilements are destroyed, there is no rebirth now. 139. "In meaning, in doctrine, in language, and likewise in ready wit; Knowledge has arisen in me, O Great Hero, in your presence. 140. "My defilements are burnt away... I dwell without defilements. 141. "My coming was indeed welcome... The Buddha's teaching has been done. 142. "The four analytical knowledges... The Buddha's teaching has been done." "Approaching the Great Hero, Vipassī, the leader of the world; Having heard the Dhamma, I took refuge in the leader of men. 146. "Having been restrained in virtues, when the supreme man had attained Nibbāna; Above his relic stupa, I worshipped with a golden parasol. 147. "Generous and virtuous, having passed away from there after a lifetime; Leaving the human body, I went to Tāvatiṃsa. 148. Then there was a great dispute Among the Sakyans concerning me; So my father ordained me, Lest the Sakyans be destroyed. 153. Having gone forth, I saw the Tathāgata, The best of men, who taught about form; But hearing him, I did not approach, Proud of my own beauty. 154. I did not accept his advice, Afraid to see the Buddha; Then the Victor, by a skillful means, Brought me to his presence. 155.
