my life is short; I will depart, leaving you, my refuge has been made. no. 323. “In the last period of my life, death approaches; This very night, Great Hero, I shall attain Nibbāna. 324. “There is no birth, old age, sickness, nor death, Great Sage; To the deathless, ageless city, the unconditioned, I shall go. 325. “As far as the assembly that attends the Teacher; Not knowing my offense (if there is any), forgive me, Sage, in person. 326. “Having wandered in saṃsāra, if I have stumbled with you; I declare, Great Hero, forgive my offense.” 327. Having heard her words, the Lord of Sages said this: “What more shall I tell you, who are going to Nibbāna? 328. “Show your psychic power, you who have served my Dispensation; And for all the assemblies, remove their doubts, as far as they extend.” 329. Having heard that word of the Sage, that bhikkhunī Yasodharā; Having saluted that King of Sages, spoke this word. 330. “I am Yasodharā, Hero, your consort in the household; Born in the Sākiya clan, established in the female state. 331. “Among a hundred thousand women, and ninety-six others; In your household, Hero, I was the chief, the mistress of all. 332. “Endowed with beauty and good conduct, in the prime of youth, sweet-spoken; All revered me, humans like deities. 333. “With a hundred thousand maidens as chief, in the Sakyaputta’s dwelling; Sharing joy and sorrow equally, like deities in Nandana. 334. “Having transcended the sense-sphere, established in the form-sphere; There is none equal in beauty, except the Leader of the World. 335. Having saluted the Fully Awakened One, she showed psychic power to the Teacher; Many and various kinds, she displayed great psychic power. 336. “Make your body like the cosmos, your head to the north; Both wings the two continents, Jambudīpa as your body. 337. “The right wing a lake, the left a feather, the various branches of the leaves; I saw the moon and the sun, and the peak of Mount Meru. 338. “‘The Cakkavāla mountain as a beak, the Jambu tree with its roots; Having come flying, I worshipped the Leader of the World. 339. “‘The form of an elephant, and likewise a horse, a mountain, and the ocean; The moon, the sun, Meru, and the form of Sakka, she showed. 340. “‘I am Yasodharā, O hero, I worship your feet, O Seer; With a thousand world-systems, she covered them with full-blown lotuses. 341. “‘Having created the form of Brahmā, he taught the Dhamma of emptiness; I am Yasodharā, O hero, I worship your feet, O Seer. 342. “‘I am master of psychic powers, and of the divine ear-element; I am master of the knowledge of others’ minds, O Great Sage. 343. “‘I know my past lives, the divine eye is purified; All defilements are destroyed, there is no more rebirth now. 344. “‘In meaning, Dhamma, interpretation, and likewise in ready wit; Knowledge has arisen in me, O Great Hero, in your presence. 345. “‘The gathering of past Leaders of the World, was shown to you; Much dedication was mine, for your sake, O Great Sage. 346. “‘The wholesome deeds I have fulfilled, O Sage, remember; For your sake, O Great Hero, merit has been accumulated by me. 347. “‘Avoiding the impossible, restraining improper conduct; For your sake, O Great Hero, life has been sacrificed by me. 348. “‘Many tens of millions of times, you gave me away as a wife; I was not displeased there, for your sake, O Great Sage. 349. “‘Many tens of millions of times, you gave me away as a helper; I was not displeased there, for your sake, O Great Sage. 350. “‘Many tens of millions of times, you gave me away for food; I was not displeased there, for your sake, O Great Sage. 351. “‘Many tens of millions of times, I sacrificed my lives; They will bring liberation from fear, I give my life. 352. “‘Ornaments on my limbs, and many various garments; I did not conceal them in a woman’s adornment, for your sake, O Great Sage. Giving up wealth and grain, Villages and towns; Fields, sons, and daughters, Were given up, Great Sage. Elephants, horses, and cows, Female slaves and attendants; For your sake, Great Hero, Were given up, countless. What you advised me, "I will give gifts to beggars"; I do not see regret in me, While giving the supreme gift. Various kinds of much suffering, In many kinds of samsara; For your sake, Great Hero, Were experienced, countless. I rejoice in attaining happiness, And am not sad in sufferings; I am balanced everywhere, For your sake, Great Sage. Following the path, the Fully Awakened One, What Dhamma he brought forth; Having experienced happiness and suffering, The Great Sage attained enlightenment. Brahma-deva and the Fully Awakened One, Gotama, leader of the world; With other world-protectors, Many were your encounters with me. Much merit for me, For your sake, Great Sage; Seeking the Buddha-Dhamma, I am your attendant. In a hundred thousand aeons, And four incalculable ones; Dīpaṅkara, the Great Hero, A world-leader arose. In a frontier region, Having invited the Tathāgata; The path of his coming, They cleared with joyful minds. At that time, he was, A brahmin named Sumedha; And he prepared the path, For the far-seeing one. At that time, I was, A maiden of brahmin birth; Named Sumittā, I approached the assembly. Eight lotus flowers in hand, For offering to the Teacher; Taking them, amidst the crowd, I saw the eminent sage. Long-followed, beloved, Exceedingly charming; Seeing him then, I thought, "My life is fruitful." That fruitful endeavor, I saw of the sage then; By former kamma in the Fully Awakened One, My mind also became clear. Further, my mind became clear. O, sage of exalted mind! I see no other offering, I give flowers to you, sage. 369. ‘‘‘May five hands be yours, May three be mine, O sage; May they be equal with that, For your enlightenment, O sage.’ The Fourth Recitation Section. 370. The sage, taking the flowers, The greatly renowned one who was coming, Worshipped in the midst of the people, For the enlightenment of the great sage. 371. Having seen in the midst of the people, Dīpaṅkara, the Great Sage, The Great Hero declared, To the sage of exalted mind. 372. From this immeasurable eon, Dīpaṅkara, the Great Sage, Declared my karma, The Great Sage declared my uprightness. 373. ‘‘‘Equal in mind, equal in deeds, Equal in action she will be; Beloved she will be by her deeds, For your sake, O great sage. 374. ‘‘‘Good to see and very beloved, Charming and sweet-spoken; An heir in his teachings, She will dwell, endowed with power. 375. ‘‘‘Just as a master protects His treasure-chest, So will she protect The wholesome teachings. 376. ‘‘‘Compassionate towards him, She will fulfill the perfections; Like a lion breaking its cage, She will attain enlightenment.’ 377. From this immeasurable eon, What the Buddha declared about me, Approving that word, I acted accordingly. 378. For that well-done deed, I gladdened my mind there; The birth as gods and humans, I experienced for countless (eons). 379. Having experienced happiness and suffering, Among gods and humans, When the last existence arrived, I was born in the Sakya clan. 380. Endowed with beauty, endowed with wealth, Endowed with fame and virtue thereafter; I am complete in all aspects, Honored among families. 381. Gain, renown, honor, The coming together of worldly conditions; My mind is not distressed, I dwell without fear from anywhere. 382. This was said by the Blessed One, In the king's inner palace then; O hero, in the presence of the Khattiyas, He pointed out the benefit. 383. And the woman who is helpful, And the woman who (stands by) in happiness and suffering; And who explains what is beneficial Whichever woman, and whichever woman is compassionate. 384. Five hundred crores of Buddhas, and nine hundred crores; To these gods of gods, I offered a great gift. 385. My great resolve, O King of Dhamma, listen to me; Eleven hundred crores, Buddhas, twelve crores. 386. To these gods of gods, I offered a great gift; My great resolve, O King of Dhamma, listen to me. 387. Twenty hundred crores of Buddhas, and thirty hundred crores; To these gods of gods, I offered a great gift. 388. My great resolve, O King of Dhamma, listen to me; Forty hundred crores, and fifty hundred crores. 389. To these gods of gods, I offered a great gift; My great resolve, O King of Dhamma, listen to me. 390. Sixty hundred crores of Buddhas, and seventy hundred crores; To these gods of gods, I offered a great gift. 391. My great resolve, O King of Dhamma, listen to me; Eighty hundred crores of Buddhas, and ninety hundred crores. 392. To these gods of gods, I offered a great gift; My great resolve, O King of Dhamma, listen to me. 393. A hundred thousand crores, are the world's foremost leaders; To these gods of gods, I offered a great gift. 394. My great resolve, O King of Dhamma, listen to me; Nine thousand crores, are other world leaders. 395. To these gods of gods, I offered a great gift; My great resolve, O King of Dhamma, listen to me. 396. A hundred thousand crores, of eighty-five great sages; Eighty-five hundred crores, and thirty-seven crores. 397. To these gods of gods, I offered a great gift; My great resolve, O King of Dhamma, listen to me. 398. Solitary Buddhas, free from passion, eighty-eight crores; My great resolve... Oh, King of Dhamma, listen to me. 399. Those with defilements destroyed, without stain, countless, disciples of the Buddha; My great service, King of Dhamma, listen to me. 400. Thus for those who practice Dhamma well, always walking in the Dhamma; The Dhamma-practicer lives happily, in this world and in the next. 401. Practice the Dhamma well-practiced, do not practice it ill-practiced; The Dhamma-practicer lives happily, in this world and in the next. 402. Having become disenchanted with cyclic existence, I went forth into homelessness; With a retinue of a thousand, having gone forth, without possessions.
