and those who are devoted to the Dispensation; Desiring to see a miracle, people worship the stupa. 156. In the city of Hamsavati, I was a wage-earner then; Seeing the joyful people, I thought thus then. 157. ‘Noble is this Blessed One, whose relic-house is seen; And these people are pleased, doing service, they are not satisfied. 158. ‘I too will do service, for the World-Protector, the Such One; I will be an heir to his teachings, in the future.’ 159. My upper garment, washed clean by the washerman; Having attached it to a bamboo pole, I raised the banner in the sky. 160. Having been consecrated, my banner soared in the sky; Seeing the banner moved by the wind, I rejoiced even more. 161. There, having purified my mind, I approached a monk; Having saluted that bhikkhu, I asked about the result of the banner. 162. He told me, delighting me, generating joy in me; ‘The result of that banner, you will experience always. 163. ‘Elephants, horses, chariots, infantry, and a four-fold army; Will always surround you, this is the fruit of the banner-offering. 164. ‘Sixty thousand musical instruments, drums well-adorned; Will always surround you, this is the fruit of the banner-offering. 165. ‘Eighty-six thousand, women well-adorned; With varied clothes and ornaments, wearing jeweled earrings. 166. ‘With long eyelashes, smiling, well-formed, slender-waisted; Will always surround you, this is the fruit of the banner-offering. 167. ‘For thirty thousand eons, you will rejoice in the deva-world; Eighty times, as king of devas, you will rule the deva-kingdom. 168. ‘A thousand times, as king, you will be a Wheel-turning Monarch; Vast regional rule, innumerable in count. 169. ‘In a hundred thousand eons, born in the Okkaka clan; Gotama by name, by lineage, he will be in the world. 170. “‘Having fallen from the deva-world, impelled by wholesome roots; Endowed with meritorious deeds, you will be a kinsman of Brahmā. 171. “‘Having abandoned eighty crores, and many servants and workers; You will go forth in the Dispensation of the Blessed Gotama. 172. “‘Having pleased the Fully Awakened One, Gotama, the chief of the Sakyas; By the name of Upavāna, you will be a disciple of the Teacher.’ 173. The deed done a hundred thousand (kalpas ago), bore fruit for me here; Like a released arrow, I burned up my defilements. 174. For me, the peaceful Wheel-turning Monarch, lord of the four continents; Flags always flutter three yojanas around. 175. A hundred thousand kalpas ago, the deed I did then; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of the flag-offering. 176. My defilements are burned up… …I dwell without taints. 177. My coming was indeed welcome… …the Buddha’s teaching has been done. 178. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed, the Elder Upavāna spoke these verses. The tenth, the Apadāna of Elder Upavāna. 11. The Apadāna of Elder Raṭṭhapāla 179. “To the Blessed Padumuttara, the world’s chief, the steadfast one; A noble elephant was given by me, with tusks like a plowshare, well-grown. 180. Adorned with a white parasol, with its trappings, with its elephant; Having valued all that, I built a monastery for the Saṅgha. 181. Fifty-four thousand palaces I built; Having made a great offering, I dedicated it to the Great Seer. 182. The Great Hero, the Self-Awakened One, the foremost person, approved; Making all people joyful, he taught the deathless state. 183. That the Buddha, named Jalajuttama, declared to me; Seated in the assembly of monks, he spoke these verses. 184. “‘Fifty-four thousand palaces this one built; I will tell the result, listen to my speech. Eighteen thousand Pinnacled mansions will be; Born in the highest Brahma realm, And they will all be made of gold. Fifty times The lord of devas will exercise divine kingship; And fifty-eight times He will be a universal monarch. In a hundred thousand aeons, Born of the Okkāka clan, Gotama by clan name, A Teacher will be in the world. Having passed away from the deva world, Impelled by the root of merit, In a rich family, with great wealth, He will be reborn immediately. He, afterwards having gone forth, Impelled by the root of merit, By the name Raṭṭhapāla, Will be the Teacher's disciple. With mind intent on exertion, he, Peaceful, without substratum, Having fully understood all defilements, Will attain nibbāna, taintless. Having arisen, having gone forth, Wealth and prosperity abandoned; Like a lump of spittle, No affection for wealth exists for me. My energy bears the burden, Leading to security from bondage; I bear this final body, In the teaching of the Perfectly Enlightened One. My defilements are burnt... ...I dwell taintless. Indeed, it was a good coming for me... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done.
