Among Khattiyas and among Brahmins; I am not born in a low family, The Buddha-worship… This is the fruit. 76. Elephants and horses, carriages that move swiftly; All of this I obtain, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 77. Groups of female servants, groups of male servants, women adorned; All of this I obtain, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 78. Silken blankets, linen and cotton cloths; All of this I obtain, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 79. New clothes, fresh fruits, new and excellent delicious food; All of this I obtain, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 80. "Eat this, enjoy this, sleep on this bed"; All of this I obtain, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 81. Everywhere I am honored, my fame is exceedingly high; I am always mighty, my retinue is always unbroken; I am supreme among my relatives, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 82. I know not cold or heat, no feverish torment exists; Also mental suffering, does not exist in my heart. 83. Having become golden-colored, I wander through existence after existence; I know no disfigurement, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 84. Having fallen from the deva-world, impelled by wholesome roots; I was born in the city of Sāvatthī, among the wealthy great Sālas. 85. Having abandoned the five sense pleasures, I went forth into homelessness; At seven years of age, I attained arahantship. 86. The Buddha, the Seer, gave me ordination, knowing my virtues; Though young, I am worthy of veneration, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 87. My divine eye is purified, I am skilled in concentration; I have reached the perfection of supernormal powers, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 88. I have attained the analytical knowledges, I am skilled in the bases of psychic power; I have reached the perfection in the Dhamma, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 89. For thirty thousand aeons, since I worshipped the Buddha; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 90. My defilements are burnt away... I dwell without taints. 91. Indeed, it was a good coming for me... the Buddha's teaching has been done. 92. The four analytical knowledges... the Buddha's teaching has been done. the Teaching of the Buddha has been done." Thus indeed, the Elder Uttara recited these verses. The Apadāna of Elder Uttara, the sixth. 7. The Apadāna of Elder Aparauttara 93. "When the Lord of the world, Siddhattha, the guide of the world, had passed away; Gathering my relatives, I made an offering of relics. 94. "Ninety-four aeons ago, when I worshipped the relics; I have known no suffering, this is the fruit of the relic-worship. 95. "My defilements are burnt away... ...I dwell without taints. 96. "Welcome indeed was my coming... ...the Teaching of the Buddha has been done. 97. "The four analytical knowledges... ...the Teaching of the Buddha has been done." Thus indeed, the Elder Aparauttara recited these verses. The Apadāna of Elder Aparauttara, the seventh. 8. The Apadāna of Elder Bhaddaji 98. "Having entered a pond, frequented by various elephants; I was then pulling out lotus roots, for the sake of food. 99. "The Blessed One at that time, named Padumuttara; The Buddha, wearing red robes, was going through the air. 100. "Shaking off his dust-heap robes, I heard a sound then; Looking up, I saw the Lord of the world. 101. "Standing right there, I begged the Lord of the world; Honey mixed with lotus roots, milk, ghee, and lotus stalks. 102. "May the Buddha, the Eye-possessor, accept from me, out of compassion; Then the compassionate Teacher, of great fame, descended. 103. "He accepted my alms, the Eye-possessor, out of compassion; Having accepted, the Fully Enlightened One, gave me his approval. 104. "'May you be happy, O greatly meritorious one, may your destiny be fulfilled; By this gift of lotus roots, may you obtain abundant happiness.' 105. "Having said this, the Fully Enlightened One, named the Best of Water-born ones; Taking the alms, the Conqueror, went through the air. 106. "Then taking the lotus roots, I went to my hermitage; Having hung the lotus roots on a tree, my gift I remembered. 107. A great wind arose, it shook the forest then; The sky resounded, and lightning struck then. 108. Then a lightning strike, fell upon my head then; I, being seated, there I passed away. 109. Endowed with meritorious kamma, I was reborn in Tusita; My body had fallen, I rejoiced in the deva world. 110. Eighty-six thousand, adorned women; attend me evening and morning, this is the fruit of the lotus-root gift. 111. Having come to the human realm, I was happy then; My possessions are not diminished, this is the fruit of the lotus-root gift. 112. Pitied by him, by the god of gods, the Such-one; All defilements are destroyed, there is now no rebirth. 113. A hundred thousand aeons ago, when I gave the lotus-root then; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of the lotus-root gift. 114. My defilements are burnt... ...I dwell without defilements. 115. Welcome indeed it was for me... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 116. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Bhaddaji spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Elder Bhaddaji, the eighth. 9. The Apadāna of Elder Sivaka 117. While seeking alms, of the great sage Vipassī; seeing an empty bowl, I filled it with gruel. 118. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I gave the alms then; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of the gruel. 119. My defilements are burnt... ...I dwell without defilements. 120. Welcome indeed it was for me... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 121. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Sivaka spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Elder Sivaka, the ninth. 10. The Apadāna of Elder Upavāna 122. The Conqueror named Padumuttara, one who has gone beyond all phenomena; having blazed like a mass of fire, the Fully Awakened One attained final Nibbāna. 123. A great having gathered, and worshipped the Tathāgata; Having made the Sugata the mind, they placed the body. 124. Having performed the funeral rites, they collected the relics there; All, with gods and humans, made a Buddha-stupa. 125. The first was made of gold, the second of jewels; The third was made of silver, the fourth of crystal. 126. There, the fifth was made of ruby; The sixth of masāragalla, all above the jewels. 127. The base was made of jewels, the railing of gems; The stupa was all gold, rising one yojana high. 128. The gods gathered there, and consulted together then; "We too shall make a stupa, for the World-Lord, the Steadfast One. 129. "There are no separate relics, the body is a single mass; Upon this Buddha-stupa, we shall make a casing." 130. The gods, with seven jewels, added another yojana; The stupa, two yojanas high, dispelled the darkness. 131. The Nāgas gathered there, and consulted together then; "Humans and gods, have made a Buddha-stupa. 132. "Let us not be negligent, we, with the gods, are diligent; We too shall make a stupa, for the World-Lord, the Steadfast One." 133. Indanīla, mahānīla, and also jotirasa gems; Having gathered them together, they covered the Buddha-stupa. 134. All was made of jewels, as far as the Buddha-cetiya; Three yojanas high, it was a source of light then. 135. The Garuḷas also gathered, and consulted together then; "Humans, gods, and Nāgas, have offered worship to the Buddha. 136. "Let us not be negligent, we, with the gods, are diligent; We too shall make a stupa, for the World-Lord, the Steadfast One." 137. They made the whole stupa of jewels, and made a casing; They also added a yojana, to the extended Buddha-cetiya. 138. Four yojanas high, the Buddha-stupa shines; It illuminates all directions, like the sun. gone. 139. Kumbhaṇḍas too, having gathered, then consulted together; 'Humans and devas, Nāgas and Garuḷas likewise. 140. 'For the Chief of Solitary Buddhas, they made an excellent stūpa; Let us not be negligent, being diligent, with the devas. 141. 'We too shall make a stūpa, for the Steadfast Lord of the World; We shall cover it with jewels, the lofty Buddha-shrine.' 142. They increased it by a league, the lofty Buddha-shrine; Five leagues in height, the stūpa shone then. 143. Yakkhas there, having gathered, then consulted together; 'Humans, devas, nāgas, Garulas and Kumbhaṇḍas. 144. 'For the Chief of Solitary Buddhas, they made an excellent stūpa; Let us not be negligent, being diligent, with the devas. 145. 'We too shall make a stūpa, for the Steadfast Lord of the World; We shall cover it with crystals, the lofty Buddha-shrine.' 146. They increased it by a league, the lofty Buddha-shrine; Six leagues in height, the stūpa shone then. 147. Gandhabbas too, having gathered, then consulted together; 'Humans, devas, nāgas, Kumbhaṇḍas, Garuḷas likewise. 148. 'All made a Buddha-stūpa, we here are non-doers; We too shall make a stūpa, for the Steadfast Lord of the World.' 149. Having made seven railings, they made a banner and umbrella; A stūpa all of gold, the Gandhabbas then caused to be made. 150. Seven leagues in height, the stūpa shone then; Night and day were not known, light was always present. 151. Its radiance did not overpower, the moon, sun, and stars; For a hundred leagues around, even a lamp did not burn. 152. At that time, whoever, humans, worshipped the stūpa; They did not ascend the stūpa, they rose up in the air. 153. A yakkha appointed by devas, named Abhisammata; A banner or a flower garland, he would place on top. 154. They did not see that yakkha, they saw the garland going. Therefore; Seeing thus, going forth, all go to a good destination. 155. Those who are opposed to the teaching,
