I went to Tāvatiṃsa. 156. “And in this last existence, I was born in a wealthy family; In the excellent city of Sāvatthī, prosperous, thriving, and rich. 157. “Seeing the Sugata entering the city, my mind was amazed; At the acceptance of Jetavana, I went forth into homelessness. 158. “In not long a time, I attained arahantship; Then I, having crossed saṃsāra, was taught by the All-Seer. 159. “I questioned the bhikkhunīs about the Dhamma; All of them, taught by me, became taintless. 160. “Then the Great Benefactor, pleased, appointed me to the foremost position; Among those who admonish bhikkhunīs, five hundred minus one. 161. “The deed done a hundred thousand aeons ago, has shown its fruit to me here; Like an arrow released, I have burnt up my defilements. 162. “My defilements are burnt… …I dwell taintless. 163. “My coming was indeed welcome… …the Buddha’s teaching has been done. 164. “The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha’s teaching has been done.” Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Nandaka spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Thera Kāḷudāyi 165. “Padumuttara by name, the Conqueror, possessed of vision in all things; A hundred thousand aeons from now, the Leader arose. 166. “The Teacher, best of leaders, the Conqueror, knowing good and bad; Grateful and knowing what was done, he established beings in the ford. 167. “With omniscient knowledge, having weighed with compassion; He taught the excellent Dhamma, a collection of infinite virtues. 168. “That Great Hero, once, in an assembly of countless people; Taught the sweet Dhamma, connected with the Four Noble Truths. 169. “Having heard that excellent Dhamma, beautiful in the beginning, middle, and end; For a hundred thousand beings, there was the realization of Dhamma. 170. “Then the earth resounded, and the clouds roared; Devas, Brahmas, humans, and asuras uttered shouts of approval. 171. “‘Oh, how compassionate is the Teacher! Oh, what a teaching of the True Dhamma! Oh, the Conqueror lifted up those sunk in the ocean of existence!’ 172. “While humans, devas, and Brahmas were thus filled with joy; The Conqueror praised a disciple, foremost in gladdening families. 173. “Then I, in Haṃsavatī, was born into a merchant family; Pleasing to the eye, handsome, possessing abundant wealth and grain. 174. “I went to Haṃsārāma, having paid homage to that Tathāgata; Having heard the sweet Dhamma, and having made an offering to the Steadfast One. 175. “Prostrating at his feet, I spoke these words: ‘The foremost in gladdening families, whom you, Sage, have praised. 176. “‘May I be such a one, O Hero, in the dispensation of the Best of Buddhas’; Then the Greatly Compassionate One, as if sprinkling me with nectar. 177. “Said to me: ‘Son, arise! You shall obtain that wish; How could an offering made to the Conqueror ever be fruitless? 178. “‘A hundred thousand aeons from now, born into the Okkāka clan; A Teacher named Gotama by clan, will appear in the world. Of him, an heir in the Dhamma, a true son, born of the Dhamma; Udāyi by name, will be the Teacher's disciple. 180. Hearing that, I became joyful, and for life, then, the Conqueror; with a mind of loving-kindness, I attended, the Leader with requisites. 181. By the result of that kamma, and by my aspirations; abandoning my human body, I went to Tāvatiṃsa. 182. And in this last existence, in charming Kapilavatthu; I was born in a great minister's family, of King Suddhodana. 183. At that time, Siddhattha was born, in the lovely Lumbinī grove; for the welfare of all the world, and for the happiness of the best of men. 184. At that very time, I was born, and grew up with him; a dear, beloved friend, skilled and wise in policy. 185. At twenty-nine years of age, having gone forth from home; having spent six years, the Leader became a Buddha. 186. Having conquered Māra with his army, having exhausted the defilements; having crossed the ocean of existence, he became a Buddha in the world of devas and humans. 187. Having gone to Isipatana, having trained the group of five; then the Blessed One trained others, going here and there. 188. Training those who were trainable, gathering the world of devas and humans; having approached the Magadha mountain, the Conqueror then dwelled there. 189. Then I, by Suddhodana, the king, was sent; having gone and seen the Ten-Powered One, I became worthy of ordination. 190. Then, having requested the Great Seer, I brought him to Kapilavatthu; before that, having gone, I gladdened the great family. 191. The Conqueror, pleased with that quality, before the great assembly, he; declared me foremost among those who gladden families, the Leader proclaimed. 192. My defilements are burnt away... I dwell without defilements. 193. Welcome indeed it was for me... the Buddha's teaching has been done. 194. The four analytical knowledges... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder Kāḷudāyi Thera uttered these verses. The Sixth Apadāna of Kāḷudāyi Thera. 7. The Apadāna of Abhaya Thera 195. “A Buddha named Padumuttara, with eyes in all doctrines; A leader arose a hundred thousand aeons ago. 196. “The Tathāgata established some in taking refuge; He established some in virtue, the ten supreme paths of action. 197. “That hero gives to some the supreme fruit of recluseship; And the eight attainments, he proclaims the three knowledges. 198. “The supreme man engaged some in the six supernormal powers; That protector gives to some the four analytical knowledges. 199. “Seeing a teachable multitude, even at an immeasurable distance; Having arrived in an instant, the charioteer of men tames them. 200. “At that time, in Haṃsavatī, I was a brahmin’s son; Proficient in all Vedas, esteemed as a grammarian. 201. “Skilled in etymology, expert in lexicons; A reciter of texts, knowing figures of speech, skilled in prosody. 202. “Wandering on foot, I approached Haṃsārāma; I saw the bestower of boons, the excellent one, honored by a great multitude. 203. “He was teaching the stainless Dhamma, and I, with an opposing mind; Having approached him, and heard his pure words. 204. “I saw no repeated, or inappropriate, or meaningless speech; from that sage, then I went forth. 205. “Not long after, skilled in all beings; Subtle in the Buddha’s word, I became esteemed for my qualities. 206. “Then, having composed four well-phrased verses; Having praised the foremost of the three worlds, I would teach them day by day. 207. “You are dispassionate, great hero, dwelling in the fearful saṃsāra; You did not extinguish out of compassion, therefore, the sage is compassionate. 208. “Though a common person, and young, he was not under the sway of defilements; Mindful and attentive, therefore, this one is immeasurable. Tiyo. 209. Weak defilements, which were within my mind; Burnt by the fire of knowledge, they did not perish, that was a wonder. 210. He who is the teacher of all the world, the world is likewise revered by him; Yet he is the world's teacher, the world follows him. 211. Thus and so, the Fully Awakened One, extolling the teaching of the Dhamma; Having done so throughout life, went to heaven, then passed away. 212. A hundred thousand aeons ago, when I extolled the Buddha; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of that extolling. 213. In the world of devas, a great kingship, I wielded, golden and precious; A great kingship as a Wheel-turning Monarch, I experienced many times. 214. I am born in two existences, as a deva or as a human; I do not know any other destination, this is the fruit of that extolling. 215. I am born in two families, as a khattiya or as a brahmin; I am not born in a low family, this is the fruit of that extolling. 216. And now, in my last existence, in the excellent city of Giribbaja; I am King Bimbisāra's son, named Abhaya. 217. Having fallen under the sway of bad friends, deluded by the Nigaṇṭha; Sent by Nāṭaputta, I approached the supreme Buddha. 218. Having asked a subtle question, having heard the excellent explanation; Having gone forth not long after, I attained arahantship. 219. Having extolled the supreme Victor, I am always praised; With a fragrant body and mouth, I was endowed with happiness. 220. With sharp, quick wisdom, I was likewise greatly wise; And with varied eloquence, by the power of that deed. 221. Having praised Padumuttara, I, with a serene mind, the unequalled Self-Awakened One; Did not go to a state of woe for aeons, for a hundred thousand, by the power of that. 222. My defilements are burnt... ...I dwell without taints. 223. It was indeed a good arrival for me... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 224. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Abhaya. These verses. He spoke. The seventh Apadāna of Thera Abhaya. 8. The Apadāna of Thera Lomasakaṅgiya 225. In this auspicious eon, A kinsman of Brahmā, greatly renowned, By the name of Kassapa, by clan, A chief among speakers, arose. 226. Then I, and Candana too, Having gone forth in the Dispensation, Fulfilled the Dhamma to the end of life, In the Dispensation. 227. Having passed away from there, we both Were reborn in Tusita; There with divine dances, Songs, and music. 228. Overcoming the rest With ten factors like beauty, Having lived for our full lifespan, Having experienced great bliss. 229. Having passed away from the Tidasā heaven, Candana was reborn; I was born in Kapilavatthu, A scion of the Sakyas. 230. When the Guide of the world Was requested by Thera Udāyi, Out of compassion for the Sakyas, He went to Kapilavhaya. 231. Then the Sakyas, full of pride, Not knowing the Buddha's qualities, Did not bow to the Fully Awakened One, Haughty by birth, disrespectful. 232. Knowing their thought, The Conqueror walked in the sky; He rained like a thundercloud,
