Naḷamāli Section 1. The Aapadāna of Thera Naḷamāli 1. The Fully Awakened One, golden-hued, Receiver of offerings; Going through the forest's edge, I saw the world's leader. 2. Taking a garland of reeds, And coming out at that very moment; There I saw the Fully Awakened One, Who had crossed the flood, taintless. 3. With a clear mind, joyful, I worshipped with the reed garland; The worthy Great Hero, Compassionate to all the world. 4. Thirty-one aeons ago from here, When I offered that garland; I do not know a bad destination, This is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 5. My defilements are burnt away, All existences are uprooted; Like an elephant breaking its bonds, I dwell taintless. 6. Indeed, it was a good coming for me, In the presence of my Buddha; The three knowledges are attained, The Buddha's teaching is done. 7. The four analytical knowledges, And these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, The Buddha's teaching is done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Thera Naḷamāli Spoke these verses. The first Aapadāna of Thera Naḷamāli. 2. The Aapadāna of Thera Maṇipūjaka 8. There was a Conqueror named Padumuttara, One who had gone beyond all phenomena; The Fully Awakened One, desiring solitude, Was going through the sky. 9. Not far from the Himalayas, There was a great natural lake; There was my dwelling, Connected with meritorious deeds. 10. Coming out from my dwelling, I saw the world's leader; Shining like a blue lotus, Blazing like a sacrificial fire. 11. Searching, I did not see a flower, To worship the leader; Having made my mind clear, I paid homage to the Teacher. 12. Taking a jewel from my head, I worshipped the world's leader; May the result of this jewel offering Be auspicious. 13. Padumuttara, the knower of worlds, Receiver of offerings; The Teacher, standing in the sky, Spoke this verse. 14. 'May that resolve of yours succeed, May you obtain abundant happiness; Through this jewel offering, May you experience great fame.' 15. This indeed The Blessed One, named Jalajuttama, The supreme Buddha went, where his mind was intent. 16. For sixty eons, as king of devas, I ruled the deva kingdom. And many hundreds of times, I was a wheel-turning monarch. 17. Remembering past deeds, I, being a deva, mindful, a gem arises for me, a light-maker for me. 18. Eighty-six thousand women are my retinue. Adorned with varied garments, wearing jeweled earrings. 19. With lovely eyelashes, smiling, well-formed, slender-waisted, they always surround me. This is the fruit of the gem offering. 20. Made of gold, made of jewels, and also made of coral, my ornaments are well-made, whatever adornments I desire. 21. Peaked houses, cave-like dwellings, and magnificent couches, knowing my intention, arise as I wish. 22. Well-gained are the gains for those, who obtain the hearing (of the Dhamma). A field of merit for humans, a medicine for all beings. 23. My deed too was well-done, that I saw the Leader. I am freed from lower states, I have attained the unmoving state. 24. Whatever birth I am reborn into, whether as a deva or a human, by day and by night, light is always for me. 25. By that very gem offering, having experienced prosperity, the light of knowledge has been seen by me, I have attained the unmoving state. 26. A hundred thousand eons ago, when I offered the gem, I know no suffering state. This is the fruit of the gem offering. 27. My defilements are burnt away... ...I dwell without taints. 28. Welcome indeed it was for me... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 29. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 30. The Blessed One named Kosika, dwelt then on Cittakūṭa. Meditating... The Awakened One delights in meditation, The Sage delights in solitude. 31. Having plunged into the Himalayas, surrounded by a host of women; I saw the Buddha Kosika, like the full moon. 32. Taking a torch, I, with my retinue then; Having stayed seven days and nights, on the eighth, I departed. 33. The Buddha Kosika, arisen, self-existent, unconquered; With a joyful mind, having paid homage, I gave one alms-food. 34. By that deed, O Lord of two-footed beings, foremost in the world, bull among men; I was reborn in the Tushita realm, this is the fruit of one alms-food. 35. Both day and night, light is always mine; All around for a hundred leagues, I pervade with radiance. 36. In fifty-five aeons, I was a Wheel-turning Monarch; Victorious over the four quarters, lord of the Rose-apple continent. 37. Then my city was, prosperous, flourishing, well-built; Thirty leagues in length, and twenty in width. 38. A city named Sobhaṇa, built by Vissakamma; Free from the ten clamors, filled with harmonious music. 39. In that city there was not, any creepers, wood, or clay; It was all made of gold, shining perpetually. 40. Surrounded by four walls, three of which were made of jewels; In the middle, a row of palm trees, also built by Vissakamma. 41. Ten thousand lotus ponds, covered with lotuses and water lilies; Covered with white lotuses, fragrant with various scents. 42. Ninety-four aeons ago, when I held the torch; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of holding the torch. 43. My defilements are burnt… I dwell without taints. 44. Indeed, it was a good coming for me… The Buddha's teaching has been done. 45. The four analytical knowledges… The Buddha's teaching has been done. The Elder's Account 46. Of Vipassī, the Blessed One, at the root of the supreme Bodhi tree; Sumana, taking a fan, fanned the supreme Bodhi. 47. Ninety-one aeons ago, I fanned the supreme Bodhi; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of fanning. 48. My defilements are burnt away… …I dwell without taints. 49. Welcome indeed was my coming… …the Buddha's teaching has been done. 50. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Sumanabījanīya spoke these verses. The fourth is the Account of the Elder Sumanabījanīya. 5. The Account of the Elder Kummāsadāyaka 51. As Vipassī, the Great Seer, was wandering for alms; seeing his empty bowl, I filled it with gruel. 52. Ninety-one aeons ago, that alms-food I then gave; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the gruel. 53. My defilements are burnt away… …I dwell without taints. 54. Welcome indeed was my coming… …the Buddha's teaching has been done. 55. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Kummāsadāyaka spoke these verses. The fifth is the Account of the Elder Kummāsadāyaka. 6. The Account of the Elder Kusaṭṭhakadāyaka 56. To Kassapa, the Blessed One, the pure Brahmin; with a joyful and happy mind, I gave a piece of kusa grass. 57. In this very aeon, I gave a piece of kusa grass; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the kusa grass. 58. My defilements are burnt away… …I dwell without taints. 59. Welcome indeed was my coming… …the Buddha's teaching has been done. 60. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Kusaṭṭhakadāyaka spoke these verses. The sixth is the Account of the Elder Kusaṭṭhakadāyaka. 7. The Account of the Elder Giripuṇṇāgiya 61. Sobhita by name, the Fully Awakened One, dwelt then on Cittakūṭa; Having taken I worshipped the Self-Existent, Giripunnāga. 62. In the ninety-fourth eon from now, I worshipped the Buddha; I do not know a bad destination, This is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 63. My defilements are burnt away… …I dwell without taints. 64. Welcome indeed it was for me… …the Buddha’s teaching has been done. 65. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder Giripunnāgiya spoke these verses. The seventh Apadāna is that of the Elder Giripunnāgiya. 8. The Apadāna of the Elder Vallikāraphaladāyaka 66. The Buddha named Sumana, dwelt in Takkara at that time; Taking a vallikāra fruit, I gave it to the Self-Existent. 67. In the thirty-first eon from now, when I gave that fruit; I do not know a bad destination, This is the fruit of giving the fruit. 68. My defilements are burnt away… …I dwell without taints. 69. Welcome indeed it was for me… …the Buddha’s teaching has been done. 70. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Elder Vallikāraphaladāyaka spoke these verses. The eighth Apadāna is that of the Elder Vallikāraphaladāyaka. 9. The Apadāna of the Elder Pānadhidāyaka 71. The Blessed One Anomadassī, foremost of the world, a bull among men; Coming out from his day-dwelling, the Seer ascended the first (step/seat). 72. Taking a well-made pānadhi, I set out on the road; There I saw the Self-Existent, walking, of beautiful appearance. 73. Having gladdened my own mind, and brought out the pānadhi; Having placed it at his feet, I spoke these words. 74. “Ascend, Great Hero, Chief of the Sugatas, Leader; From this I shall obtain fruit, May that purpose of mine succeed.” 75. The Blessed One Anomadassī, foremost of the world, a bull among men; Having ascended the pānadhi, spoke these words. 76. “He who gave me the pānadhi, with his own hands, with faith; Him I shall proclaim, listen to my speaking.” 77. The Bud Understanding his words, all devas assembled; With uplifted minds, joyful, filled with rapture, with joined palms. 78. “By the giving of the water-strainer, he will be happy; And fifty-five times, he will rule as king of devas. 79. “And a thousand times as king, he will be a wheel-turning monarch; Vast regional rule, countless in number. 80. “In immeasurable eons from now, born in the Okkāka clan, By clan name Gotama, a Teacher will appear in the world. 81. “An heir in his Dhamma, a true son, born of Dhamma; Having fully understood all defilements, will attain Nibbāna, free from defilements. 82. “In the world of devas or humans,
