Chapter 44. The Chapter of the Solitary Dweller 1. The Apadāna of Thera Ekavihārika 1. In this auspicious eon, A kinsman of Brahmā, greatly renowned, By clan name Kassapa, A supreme speaker, arose. 2. Free from proliferation, without support, With a mind like space, Abounding in emptiness, such a one, Delighting in the signless, a master. 3. With an unattached mind, without defilements, Unmingled with families and groups, Greatly compassionate, a hero, Skilled in means of discipline. 4. Engaged in the welfare of others, Disciplining gods and humans, The path leading to Nibbāna, The destination that dries up the mire. 5. The deathless, supreme delight, Preventing old age and death, Amidst a great assembly, he, The world's deliverer, sat. 6. The Lord with a voice like a karavīka bird, The Tathāgata with a divine voice, Lifting out of great difficulties, Those lost and without a leader. 7. Preaching the stainless Dhamma, I saw the world's leader; Having heard his Dhamma, I went forth into homelessness. 8. Having gone forth then, I, Contemplating the Victor's teaching, Alone in the delightful forest, Lived, afflicted by association. 9. My solitude from the body, Became a cause for me, For the mind's solitude, Seeing the danger in association. 10. My defilements are burnt, All existences are uprooted; Like a serpent breaking its bonds, I dwell, taintless. 11. Welcome indeed it was for me, In the presence of my Buddha; The three knowledges are attained, The Buddha's teaching is done. 12. The four analytical knowledges, And these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, The Buddha's teaching is done. Thus indeed, the venerable Thera Ekavihārika Spoke these verses. The first Apadāna of Thera Ekavihārika. 2. The Apadāna of Thera Ekasaṅkhiya 13. Of the Blessed One Vipassī, There was a great Bodhi festival; Many people gathered, And worshipped the supreme Bodhi. 14. I do not think him to be inferior, He will be the supreme Buddha; Whose Bodhi is such, Worthy of worship. and of the Teacher. 15. Then taking a conch, I attended the Bodhi tree; Blowing it all day, I worshipped the supreme Bodhi. 16. The deed done nearby, led me to the deva world; My body having fallen, I rejoice in the deva world. 17. Sixty thousand musical instruments, joyful and delighted, Always attend me; This is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 18. In the seventy-first eon, I was a king named Sudassana; A conqueror of the four quarters, lord of the Rose-apple continent. 19. Then hundreds of musical instruments, always surround me; I experience my own karma, this is the fruit of attendance. 20. Whatever womb I am reborn into, whether divinity or humanity; Even when in my mother's womb, drums always sound. 21. Having attended the Fully Awakened One, having experienced prosperity; The auspicious, safe, immortal, I have attained the unshakeable state. 22. In the ninety-first eon, the deed I did then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of worshipping the Buddha. 23. My defilements are burnt… …I dwell without taints. 24. Welcome indeed it was for me… …the Buddha's teaching has been accomplished. 25. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha's teaching has been accomplished. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Ekasaṅkhiya spoke these verses. The second Apadāna of the Elder Ekasaṅkhiya. 3. The Apadāna of the Elder Pāṭihīrasaññaka 26. The Conqueror named Padumuttara, receiver of offerings; With hundreds of thousands of ascetics, entered the city then. 27. As he entered the city, the tranquil, such one; Jewels shone forth, a sound arose at once. 28. By the power of the Buddha, drums sounded without being struck; Lutes played by themselves, as the Buddha entered the city. 29. I worship the foremost Buddha, the great sage Padumuttara; And having seen the miracle, I gladdened my mind there. 30. Oh, the Buddha! Oh, the Dhamma! Oh, n Oh, the Master's accomplishment! Even unconscious instruments, play by themselves. 31. A hundred thousand aeons ago, the perception I then gained; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the perception of the Buddha. 32. My defilements are burnt away... ...I dwell without taints. 33. Indeed, it was a good coming for me... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 34. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Pāṭihīrasaññaka spoke these verses. The third Apadāna of the Elder Pāṭihīrasaññaka. 4. The Apadāna of the Elder Ñāṇatthavika 35. Like a blazing Kaṇikāra tree, like a shining lamp-tree; Like gleaming gold, I saw the best of bipeds. 36. Setting aside my water-pot, bark-robe and bowl; Placing the deer-skin over one shoulder, I praised the best of Buddhas. 37. ‘Dispelling that darkness, entangled with the net of delusion; Showing the light of knowledge, you have crossed over, Great Sage. 38. ‘You lift up this world, all-encompassing, unsurpassed; In your knowledge there is no equal, as far as the world's course extends. 39. ‘By that knowledge, Omniscient One, thus you are called Buddha; I venerate that Great Hero, the unobstructed Omniscient One.’ 40. A hundred thousand aeons ago, I praised the best of Buddhas; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of praising knowledge. 41. My defilements are burnt away... ...I dwell without taints. 42. Indeed, it was a good coming for me... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. 43. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Ñāṇatthavika spoke these verses. The fourth Apadāna of the Elder Ñāṇatthavika. 5. The Apadāna of the Elder Ucchukhaṇḍika 44. In the city of Bandhumatī, I was a gatekeeper; I saw the stainless Buddha, one who has gone beyond all phenomena. 45. Taking a piece of sugarcane, I gave it to the best of Buddhas; With a clear and joyful mind, to Vipassī, the Great Sage. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I gave the sugarcane then; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of the sugarcane piece. My defilements are burnt… (etc.)… I dwell without taints. Indeed, it was a good coming for me… (etc.)… the Buddha’s teaching has been done. The four analytical knowledges… (etc.)… the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Ucchukhaṇḍika these verses recited. The fifth is the Apadāna of the Elder Ucchukhaṇḍika. A Buddha named Romasa, dwelt in a mountain cave; I gave him a kaḷamba fruit, delighted with my own hands. Ninety-four aeons ago, when I gave that gift then; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of the kaḷamba fruit. My defilements are burnt… (etc.)… I dwell without taints. Indeed, it was a good coming for me… (etc.)… the Buddha’s teaching has been done. The four analytical knowledges… (etc.)… the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Kaḷambadāyaka these verses recited. The sixth is the Apadāna of the Elder Kaḷambadāyaka. Seeing the Buddha in the forest, self-born, unconquered; Taking an ambāṭaka fruit, I gave it to the self-born one. Thirty-one aeons ago from now, when I gave that fruit then; I know no suffering, this is the fruit of the fruit-giving. My defilements are burnt… (etc.)… I dwell without taints. Indeed, it was a good coming for me… (etc.)… the Buddha’s teaching has been done. The four analytical knowledges… (etc.)… the Buddha’s teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Ambāṭakadāyaka these verses recited. The seventh is the Apadāna of the Elder Ambāṭakadāyaka. Harītaka, āmalaka, mango, rose-apple, vibhītaka; Jujube, bhallātaka, bael, I myself carried. Seeing the sage who had gone to a mountain cave, meditating, delighting in meditation; afflicted by illness the peerless great sage. 62. Taking a haritaki fruit, I gave it to the Self-Existent One; As soon as the medicine was eaten, the illness subsided immediately. 63. The Buddha, free from agitation, gave his approval to me; ‘By this gift of medicine, and by the calming of the illness, 64. ‘Whether born as a deva or a human, or born in any other state of being; May he be happy everywhere, and may illness not come to him.’ 65. Having said this, the Fully Awakened One, the Self-Existent, the Unvanquished, the wise one ascended into the sky, like a king of swans in the atmosphere. 66. Since the haritaki was given, to the Self-Existent Great Sage; Taking this birth as a basis, illness has not arisen for me. 67. This is my last, my final existence now; The three knowledges are realized, the Buddha’s teaching is done. 68. Ninety-four aeons ago, I gave that medicine then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of the medicine. 69. My defilements are burnt away… …I dwell without taints. 70. Indeed, it was a good coming for me… …the Buddha’s teaching is done. 71. The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha’s teaching is done.’ Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Harītakadāyaka spoke these verses. The eighth Apadāna of the Elder Harītakadāyaka. 9. The Apadāna of the Elder Ambapiṇḍiya 72. I was a king of elephants then, with tusks like plough-poles, mighty; Wandering in the great forest, I saw the Leader of the World. 73. Taking a cluster of mangoes, I gave it to the Teacher; The Great Hero accepted it, Siddhattha, the Leader of the World. 74. While I was looking on, the Conqueror ate it then; Having gladdened my mind there, I was reborn in Tusita. 75. From there, having passed away, I became a Wheel-turning Monarch; By this very means, having experienced prosperity. 76. With my mind devoted to exertion, peaceful, without defilements; Having fully known all taints, I dwell without taints. 77. Ninety-four aeons ago, the fruit I gave then; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of that gift. fruit. 78. My defilements are burnt… I dwell without taints. 79. Welcome indeed it was for me… The Buddha’s teaching has been done. 80. The four analytical knowledges…
