Having given smoke-tubes to the Conqueror, to the Sangha, the supreme excellent assembly; I experience three benefits, befitting my deeds. 159. My mindfulness becomes straight, and my sinews well-connected; I obtain the divine eye, as a result of that. (28. The Benefit of a Lamp-Stand) 160. Having given lamp-stands to the Conqueror, to the Sangha, the supreme excellent assembly; I experience three benefits, befitting my deeds. 161. Of good birth, endowed with limbs, wise, approved by the Buddha; These qualities I obtain, as a result of that. (29. Gourd-Box and Basket) 162. Having given gourds and baskets, to the Buddha, the supreme assembly; I experience ten benefits, befitting my deeds. 163. Well-guarded, endowed with happiness, of great fame, a Tathāgata; Free from misfortune, delicate, avoiding all calamities. 164. Obtaining abundant qualities, my movements are steady; Well-avoided agitation, in gourds and baskets. 165. I obtain the four complexions, and elephant-jewels; These do not perish for me, this is the fruit of the gourd-gift. (30. The Benefit of a Dirt-Remover) 166. Having given dirt-removers to the Buddha, s Oh, in the supreme Sangha; I experience five benefits, fitting for my kamma. 167. Endowed with all auspicious marks, possessed of long life and wisdom; Free from all weariness, my body always is. (31. Benefit of giving a berry) 168. Having given berries to the Sangha, sharp-edged for craving; I gain unequalled, pure knowledge, that cuts defilements. (32. Benefit of giving tongs) 169. Having given tongs to the Fortunate One, in the supreme Sangha; I gain unequalled, pure knowledge, that breaks defilements. (33. Benefit of giving a pouch) 170. Having given a pouch to the Fortunate One, in the supreme Sangha; I experience eight benefits, fitting for my kamma. 171. Faith, virtue, and also shame, then the quality of dread; Learning, generosity, and patience, wisdom my eighth quality. (34. Benefit of giving a stool) 172. Having given stools to the Fortunate One, in the supreme Sangha; I experience five benefits, fitting for my kamma. 173. I am born in a high family, I become one with great wealth; All revere me, my fame is exalted. 174. For a hundred thousand aeons, square couches; Always surround me, I delight in sharing. (35. Benefit of giving a cushion) 175. Having given cushions to the Fortunate One, in the supreme Sangha; I experience six benefits, fitting for my kamma. 176. Well-developed, soft, and lovely to behold; I gain a retinue of knowledge, this is the fruit of giving cushions. 177. Many mattresses, embroidered coverings, wooden ones; And excellent blankets of various kinds, I obtain. 178. And soft outer coverings, soft leather braids; I obtain various coverings, this is the fruit of giving cushions. 179. From when I remember myself, from when I attained understanding; My meditation couch is never empty, this is the fruit of giving cushions. 180. Giving a head-rest to the Conqueror, to the Sangha, the supreme assembly; I experience six benefits, befitting my deed. 181. Of wool and of lotus, and of red sandalwood; I obtain head-rests, for my head always. 182. In the noble eightfold path, in the four fruits of recluseship; Having produced knowledge in them, I dwell perpetually. 183. In giving, in self-control, in restraint, in the boundless states; Having produced knowledge in them, I dwell at all times. 184. In duties, in virtues, in practice, and in conduct and actions; Having produced knowledge in them, I dwell always. 185. In walking meditation or in exertion, in the factors of enlightenment; Having produced knowledge in them, I dwell as I wish. 186. Virtue, concentration, and wisdom, and unsurpassed liberation; Having produced knowledge in them, I dwell happily. 187. Giving a fruit-stool to the Conqueror, to the Sangha, the supreme assembly; I experience two benefits, befitting my deed. 188. Of gold, of jewels, of excellent ivory, many; I obtain supreme couches, this is the fruit of the fruit-stool. 189. Giving a foot-stool to the Conqueror, to the Sangha, the supreme assembly; I experience two benefits, befitting my deed; I obtain many vehicles, this is the fruit of the foot-stool. 190. Maidservants, servants, and wives, and others who are dependents; Rightly attend upon me, this is the fruit of the foot-stool. 191. Giving oil for anointing, to the Sangha, the supreme assembly; I experience five benefits, befitting my deed. 192. Freedom from sickness, beauty, swift understanding of the Dhamma; Obtaining food and drink, and life as the fifth for me. 193. And having given ghee-oil, to the Sangha, the supreme, unsurpassed; I experience five benefits, suitable to my karma. 194. Strong, endowed with beauty, with a body always joyful; I am free from illness, clear; this is the fruit of ghee oil. 195. Having given mouth-cleaner, to the Buddha, the Sangha, the supreme assembly; I experience five benefits, suitable to my karma. 196. With a clear throat, a sweet voice, free from cough and asthma; the scent of a blue lotus from my mouth, always wafts forth. 197. Having given excellent curds, to the Buddha, the Sangha, the supreme assembly; I partake of immortal food, and supreme mindfulness of the body. 198. Endowed with color, scent, and taste, having given honey to the Victorious Ones, the assembly; incomparable, unequalled, I drink the nectar of liberation. 199. Having given true taste, to the Buddha, the Sangha, the supreme assembly; I experience four fruits, suitable to my karma. 200. Having given food and drink, to the Buddha, the Sangha, the supreme assembly; I experience ten benefits, suitable to my karma. 201. Long-lived, strong, wise, beautiful, famous, happy; recipient of food and drink, brave, always endowed with wisdom; I obtain these qualities, as I wander through existences. 202. Having given incense to the Fortunate One, to the Sangha, the supreme excellent assembly; I experience ten benefits, suitable to my karma. 203. With a fragrant body, famous, swift in wisdom, and renowned; sharp in wisdom, vast in wisdom, with profound wisdom that brings joy. 204. With expansive, swift wisdom, as I wander from existence to existence; by that very power now, I have attained the peaceful, auspicious happiness. 205. My defilements are burnt up, all existences are uprooted; like an elephant breaking its bonds, I dwell without taints. 206. Indeed, it was a good coming for me, in the presence of my Buddha. [described in the commentary to the Apadāna of Thera Upāli]; The three knowledges are attained, The Buddha's teaching is done. 207. "The four analytical knowledges, And these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers are realized, The Buddha's teaching is done." "In the city of Haṃsavatī, I was a street master; Gathering my relatives, I spoke this word. 209. "'A Buddha has arisen in the world, The unsurpassed field of merit; He was a refuge for all the world, A recipient of offerings. 210. "'Khattiyas and merchants, Great wealthy ones and brahmins; With minds serene and joyful, They formed a community. 211. "'Elephant riders and soldiers, Charioteers and infantrymen; With minds serene and joyful, They formed a community. 212. "'Nobles and princes, Vesiyas and brahmins; With minds serene and joyful, They formed a community. 213. "'Cooks and barbers, Bathers and garland makers; With minds serene and joyful, They formed a community. 214. "'Washers and weavers, Leather workers and barbers; With minds serene and joyful, They formed a community. 215. "'Arrow makers and turners, Leather workers and carpenters; With minds serene and joyful, They formed a community. 216. "'Blacksmiths and goldsmiths, And coppersmiths likewise; With minds serene and joyful, They formed a community. 217. "'Hired laborers and servants, Many slaves and workers; According to their own strength, They formed a community. 218. "'Water carriers and wood carriers, Farmers and grass carriers; According to their own strength, They formed a community. 219. "'Flower sellers and garland makers, Leaf sellers and fruit carriers; According to their own strength, They formed a community. 220. "'Courtesans and potters and maidservants, and fishmongers, and those who sold cakes; With their own strength, they formed a group. 221. “‘Come all together, let us form a group; We will perform a service, in the unsurpassed field of merit.’ 222. “Hearing my words, they immediately formed a group; They had a well-made service hall built for the community of monks. 223. “Having completed that hall, elated and joyful in mind; Accompanied by all of them, I approached the Fully Awakened One. 224. “Having approached the Fully Awakened One, the Lord of the world, the Bull among men; Having worshipped the Teacher’s feet, I spoke these words. 225. “‘These three hundred men, O Hero, a group united; Dedicate this well-made service hall to you, O Sage.’ 226. “Before the community of monks, the Seer accepted it; Before the three hundred, he spoke these verses. 227. “‘The three hundred and the elder, followed together; Having performed good deeds, all of you will experience prosperity. 228. “‘When the last existence is reached, the unsurpassed coolness; The ageless, deathless, peaceful Nibbāna you will attain.’ 229. “Thus the Buddha declared, the All-knowing, the Foremost of ascetics; Hearing the Buddha’s words, I expressed joy. 230. “For thirty thousand aeons, I delighted in the world of devas; Five hundred times I was the chief of devas, I ruled as a deva-king. 231. “A thousand times I was a king, a Wheel-turning monarch I was; While ruling as a deva-king, the great devas bowed to me. 232. “Here in human kingship, my relatives were my retinue;
