Seeing him arrive, I falsely accused the faultless one. 75. "Then I said to my disciples, 'This sage is one who indulges in sensual pleasures'; Even as I spoke, The young men approved. 76. "Then all the young men, As he begged from house to house, Said to the great multitude, 'This sage is one who indulges in sensual pleasures.' 77. "By the ripening of that kamma, These five hundred bhikkhus, All received false accusation, Because of Sundarikā. 78. "Formerly, my step-brother, For the sake of wealth, I killed; I threw him into a mountain chasm, And crushed him with a rock. 79. "By the ripening of that kamma, Devadatta threw a rock; It crushed the big toe of my foot, A stone fragment. 80. "Formerly, I was a child, Playing on the high road; Seeing a Paccekabuddha, I threw a stone chip on his path. 81. "By the ripening of that kamma, In this last existence, Devadatta employed assassins, To kill me. 82. "Formerly, I was an elephant-driver, A supreme Paccekamuni; As he wandered for alms, I... I provoked the elephant. 83. By that karma's result, the elephant Nāḷāgiri, in the excellent city of Giribbaja, became fierce and approached me. 84. I was a king, a ruler, I struck a man with a spear. By that karma's result, I burned fiercely in hell. 85. By the remainder of that karma, now all my skin on my feet was torn; for karma is not destroyed. 86. I was in a fisherman's village, I was a fisherman's boy; seeing fish being killed, I felt joy. 87. By that karma's result, I had a headache; all the Sakyas were killed, when Viṭaṭūbha struck. 88. In the teaching of Phussa, I reviled the disciples: "Eat and consume barley, do not eat fine rice." 89. By that karma's result, for three months I ate barley; though invited by a brahmin, I then resided in Verañjā. 90. When the wrestling was going on, I pushed down a Malla youth; by that karma's result, I had back pain. 91. I was a physician, I purged a merchant's son; by that karma's result, I suffer from dysentery. 92. I, Jotīpāla, said to Kassapa the Sugata then: "Whence enlightenment for a shaven one? Enlightenment is extremely hard to attain." 93. By that karma's result, I practiced many austerities; for six years by the Nerañjarā, then I attained enlightenment. 94. Not by this path did I attain supreme enlightenment; I sought it by a wrong path, hindered by former karma. 95. With merit and demerit exhausted, free from all torment; sorrowless, without despair, I shall attain Nibbāna, taintless. 96. Thus the Conqueror declared, before the assembly of monks; having attained all powers of higher knowledge, at the great lake Anotatta. Thus indeed it was said. The Buddha spoke the Dhamma discourse, an Apadāna, named "The Patchwork of Past Kamma", concerning his own past conduct. The tenth Apadāna of the Buddha, named "The Patchwork of Past Kamma". The thirty-ninth chapter is Avaṭaphala. Its summary: Avaṭa and Labuja, Udumbara and Pilakkha; Phāru, and Vallī, Kadalī, Panasa, Koṭivīsaka. And Pubbakammapiloti, the Apadāna of the Great Seer; Ninety-one verses, counted by the discerning ones. The fourteenth recitation section.
