The Chapter on the Avaṭa Fruit 1. The Legend of the Elder Who Gave an Avaṭa Fruit 1. The Blessed One named Sataraṃsi, self-existent, unconquered; the Fully Awakened One, desiring solitude, went forth for alms. 2. I, with fruit in hand, seeing him, approached the bull among men; with a clear and joyful mind, I gave an avaṭa fruit. 3. Ninety-four aeons ago, when I gave that fruit; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of giving that fruit. 4. My defilements are burned away, all existences are uprooted; like an elephant breaking its bonds, I dwell without defilements. 5. Welcome indeed was my coming, in the presence of my Buddha; the three knowledges are attained, the Buddha's teaching is done. 6. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; the six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha's teaching is done. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder, the Giver of the Avaṭa Fruit, spoke these verses. The Legend of the Elder Who Gave an Avaṭa Fruit, the first. 2. The Legend of the Elder Who Gave a Breadfruit 7. In the city of Bandhumatī, I was a park-keeper then; I saw the stainless Buddha, going through the air. 8. Taking a breadfruit, I gave it to the best of Buddhas; standing in the sky, the greatly renowned one received it. 9. Generating joy for me, bringing happiness in this very life; having given the fruit to the Buddha, with a perfectly clear mind. 10. I then attained joy, and abundant supreme happiness; jewels always arise, for one reborn here and there. 11. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I gave that fruit; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of giving that fruit. 12. My defilements are burned away, all existences are uprooted; like an elephant breaking its bonds, I dwell without defilements. 13. Welcome indeed was my coming, in the presence of my Buddha; the three knowledges are attained, the Buddha's teaching is done. 14. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; the six supernormal powers are realized, the Buddha's teaching is done. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder, the Giver of the Breadfruit, spoke these verses. The Legend of the Elder Who Gave a Breadfruit, the second. 15. On the bank of the Vinatā river, dwelt the supreme man. I saw the dustless Buddha, concentrated, well-composed. 16. With a mind serene towards him, the cleanser of defilements, I took a fig fruit, and gave it to the best of Buddhas. 17. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I gave that fruit, I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of that fruit-offering. 18. My defilements are burnt out, all existences are uprooted; I dwell without taints. 19. Welcome indeed was it for me, in the presence of the best of Buddhas; Acts of reverence have been done, the Buddha's teaching has been accomplished. 20. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been accomplished. 21. Seeing the Buddha in the forest, the Seer of the Goal, greatly renowned; With a serene mind, joyful, I gave a banyan fruit. 22. Eighteen hundred aeons ago, when I gave that fruit, I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of that fruit-offering. 23. My defilements are burnt out, all existences are uprooted; I dwell without taints. 24. Welcome indeed was it for me, in the presence of the best of Buddhas; Acts of reverence have been done, the Buddha's teaching has been accomplished. 25. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been accomplished. 26. The golden-hued Fully Awakened One, receiver of offerings; As he was walking on the road, I gave a phārusaka fruit. 27. Ninety-one aeons ago, when I gave that fruit, I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of that fruit-offering. 28. My defilements are burnt out, all existences are uprooted; I dwell without taints. 29. Welcome indeed was it for me, in the presence of the best of Buddhas; Acts of reverence have been done, the Buddha's teaching has been accomplished. 30. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers have been realized, the Buddha's teaching has been accomplished. the Teaching. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Phārusaphaladāyaka spoke these verses. The fifth Apadāna is that of the Elder Phārusaphaladāyaka. 6. The Apadāna of the Elder Valliphaladāyaka 31. All the people gathered, and went to the forest then; Searching for fruit, they found fruit then. 32. There I saw the Fully Awakened One, self-existent, unconquered; With a clear and joyful mind, I gave a creeper fruit. 33. Thirty-one aeons ago, when I gave that fruit; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of that fruit-giving. 34. My defilements are burnt... (etc.) ... I dwell without taints. 35. Welcome indeed it was for me... (etc.) ... the Buddha's teaching has been done. 36. The four analytical knowledges... (etc.) ... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Valliphaladāyaka spoke these verses. The sixth Apadāna is that of the Elder Valliphaladāyaka. 7. The Apadāna of the Elder Kadaliphaladāyaka 37. Like a blazing Kaṇikāra tree, like the full moon; Like a shining lamp-tree, I saw the leader of the world. 38. Taking a banana fruit, I gave it to the Teacher; With a clear and joyful mind, having bowed, I departed. 39. Thirty-one aeons ago, when I gave that fruit; I know no bad destination, this is the fruit of that fruit-giving. 40. My defilements are burnt... (etc.) ... I dwell without taints. 41. Welcome indeed it was for me... (etc.) ... the Buddha's teaching has been done. 42. The four analytical knowledges... (etc.) ... the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Kadaliphaladāyaka spoke these verses. The seventh Apadāna is that of the Elder Kadaliphaladāyaka. 8. The Apadāna of the Elder Panasaphaladāyaka 43. A Fully Awakened One named Ajjuna, dwelt in the Himalayas then; Endowed with conduct, a sage skilled in concentration. 44. Taking a pot-sized jīvajīvaka jackfruit Having placed a leaf-umbrella, I gave it to the Teacher. 45. In the thirty-first eon from now, the fruit I gave then; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of that fruit-giving. 46. My defilements are burnt away... I dwell without taints. 47. Welcome indeed it was for me... The Buddha's teaching has been done. 48. The four analytical knowledges... The Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Panasaphaladāyaka spoke these verses. The eighth life-story of the Elder Panasaphaladāyaka. 9. The life-story of the Elder Soṇakoṭivīsa 49. In the teaching of Vipassī, one dwelling was made by me; for the Sangha of the four directions, in the royal capital of Bandhumā. 50. With cloths, the ground of the dwelling, having spread, I offered; with an uplifted mind, joyful, I made a resolution then. 51. May I please the Fully Enlightened One, and may I obtain renunciation; and the unsurpassed Nibbāna, may I attain the supreme peace. 52. By that very root of merit, for ninety eons I wandered; having become a deity and a human, having done merit, I shone. 53. Then by the remainder of that kamma, here in this last existence; in Campā, to the chief merchant, I was born as an only son. 54. As soon as I was born, having heard of me, this was my father's wish: "I will give to the boy twenty crores, no less." 55. And my hairs, four fingers long, grew on both soles of my feet; fine, soft to the touch, like cotton down, beautiful. 56. Ninety eons have passed, and this one more; I do not know placing my feet on uncovered ground. 57. The Fully Enlightened One was pleased by me, I went forth into homelessness; and Arahantship was attained by me, I am cooled, extinguished. 58. Foremost among those who have aroused energy, declared by the All-seer; I am one whose taints are destroyed, an Arahant, possessing six supernormal powers, of great psychic power. 59. In the ninety-first eon, the gift I gave then; I do not know a bad destination, this is the fruit of that dwelling-gift. 60. My defilements are burnt away... I dwell without defilements. 61. “Welcome indeed it was for me... The Buddha's teaching has been done. 62. “The four analytical knowledges... The Buddha's teaching has been done.” 63. The elder Soṇa Koṭivīsa, foremost in the Sangha of monks; Being asked a question, he explained, at the great Anotatta lake. Thus indeed, the venerable elder Soṇa Koṭivīsa spoke these verses. The ninth Apadāna of Elder Soṇa Koṭivīsa. 10. The Apadāna of the Buddha concerning his former deed of the rag-patch 64. Near Anotatta Lake, on a delightful rock surface; Illuminated by various jewels, within a forest of various fragrances. 65. Surrounded by a great assembly of monks, the Leader of the World; Seated there, he explained his own former deeds. 66. “Listen, O monks, to me, what deed was done by me; The deed of the rag-patch, even in Buddhahood, ripens. 67. “I was a rogue named Munāḷi, in former other births... A Paccekabuddha, fragrant, I falsely accused, though faultless. 68. "By the ripening of that kamma, I wandered long in hell; For many thousands of years, I experienced painful feelings. 69. "By the remainder of that kamma, In this last existence, I received false accusation, Because of Sundarikā. 70. "Of the Buddha, the all-conqueror, Nanda was a disciple by name; Accusing him falsely, I wandered long in hell. 71. "For ten thousand years, I wandered long in hell; Having gained human existence, I received many false accusations. 72. "By the remainder of that kamma, Ciñcāmāṇavikā, Falsely accused me of what was not, Before the assembly of people. 73. "I was a learned brahmin, Honored and revered; In the great forest, five hundred, Young men I taught the mantras. 74. "There came a fearsome sage, Possessing five supernormal powers, of great might;
