4. The Chapter of Kuṇḍadhāna 1. The Apadāna of Elder Kuṇḍadhāna 1. For seven days secluded, the Self-Existent, foremost person; With a clear and joyful mind, I attended the best of Buddhas. 2. Knowing the time he arose, Padumuttara, the great sage; A large banana fruit, taking it, I approached. 3. The Fortunate One accepted, the Omniscient, leader of the world; Gladdening my mind, the great sage consumed it. 4. Having consumed it, the Fully Awakened One, the unsurpassed caravan leader; Seating himself on his seat, spoke these verses. 5. ‘And those who are gathered, yakkhas on this mountain; All beings in the forest, let them hear my words.’ 6. ‘He who attended the Buddha, like a lion to the king of beasts; Him I shall praise, listen to my speech.’ 7. ‘Eleven times, he will be king of devas; And thirty-four times, he will be a wheel-turning monarch. 8. ‘In a hundred thousand aeons, born in the Okkāka clan; Gotama by name, a Teacher will arise in the world. 9. ‘Having reviled ascetics, virtuous and taint-free; By the ripening of evil kamma, he will obtain a name. 10. ‘Of his Dhamma, an heir, a true son, born of Dhamma; Kuṇḍadhāna by name, that will be his disciple.’ 11. Devoted to solitude, a meditator, delighting in jhāna, I; Having pleased the Teacher, I dwell taint-free. 12. Surrounded by disciples, with the Sangha of bhikkhus in front; Seated in the assembly of bhikkhus, the Conqueror had the lots taken. 13. Making my robe over one shoulder, having saluted the world's leader; Before the best of speakers, I took the first lot. 14. By that deed, the Fortunate One, who shook ten thousand worlds; Seated in the assembly of bhikkhus, placed me in the foremost position. 15. My energy is a burden-bearer, leading to security from bondage; I bear this final body, in the teaching of the Fully Self-Awakened One. 16. The four analytical knowledges, and these eight liberations; The six supernormal powers realized, the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed, the venerable Elder Kuṇḍadhāna spoke these verses. The first Apadāna of Elder Kuṇḍadhāna. 2. The Apadāna of Elder Sāgata 17. Sobhita by name, I was a brahmin then; Surrounded by my disciples, I went to the park. 18. The Blessed One at that time, surrounded by the Sangha of monks; Exiting the park gate, the supreme man stood. 19. I saw that Fully Awakened One, tamed, surrounded by the tamed; Having gladdened my own mind, I praised the leader of the world. 20. Whatever trees there are, all of them, they grow on the earth; Likewise, beings with wisdom, grow in the teaching of the Conqueror. 21. You are a wise caravan leader, a great seeker for many people; Having lifted them from wrong paths, you point out the path. 22. Tamed, surrounded by the tamed, a meditator, by those delighting in meditation; Ardent, by those with minds applied, by the peaceful, by such ones. 23. Adorned by assemblies, you shine with merit and wisdom; Your radiance streams forth, like at sunrise. 24. Seeing my gladdened mind, the great seeker Padumuttara; The Teacher, standing in the Sangha of monks, spoke these verses. 25. ‘That brahmin who, having caused joy, praised me; For a hundred thousand aeons, he will delight in the deva world. 26. ‘Indeed, having fallen from Tusita, impelled by his root of merit; In the teaching of the Blessed Gotama, he will go forth. 27. ‘By that well-done action, he will attain arahantship; Sāgata by name, he will be a disciple of the Teacher.’ 28. Having gone forth, with my body, I avoided evil deeds; Having abandoned misconduct in speech, I purified my livelihood. 29. Thus dwelling, I, skilled in the element of fire; S Having fully understood the defilements, I dwell without defilements. 30. The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done. Thus indeed the Venerable Elder Sāgata spoke these verses. The Apadāna of Elder Sāgata, the second. 3. The Apadāna of Elder Mahākaccāna 31. For the Lord Padumuttara, a shrine named Paduma; Having made a stone seat, I covered it with gold. 32. And a jewelled parasol, holding a yak-tail whisk; I offered to the Buddha, the Kinsman of the World, the Steadfast One. 33. As many deities as there are on earth, all gathered then; Of the jewelled parasols, he will declare the result. 34. And we shall hear all that, from the Teacher as he speaks; We shall generate more joy, in the teaching of the Perfectly Enlightened One. 35. Seated on a golden throne, the Self-existent, the Foremost Person; Surrounded by the Sangha of monks, spoke these verses. 36. ‘By whom this seat was given, golden and jewelled; I shall praise him, listen to my words. 37. ‘For thirty aeons, as king of devas, he will rule the deva kingdom; For a hundred leagues all around, he will outshine with his radiance. 38. ‘Having come to the human world, he will become a Wheel-turning Monarch; By the name Pabhassara (Radiant), he will be of mighty splendor. 39. ‘By day or by night, like the risen sun; For eight cubits all around, the warrior will illuminate. 40. ‘In a hundred thousand aeons, born in the Okkāka clan; By clan name Gotama, a Teacher will arise in the world. 41. ‘Indeed, having fallen from Tusita, impelled by wholesome roots; By name Kaccāna, he will be a kinsman of Brahmā. 42. ‘He, later having gone forth, will be an Arahant, without defilements; Gotama, the Light of the World, will place him in the foremost position. 43. ‘A question asked concisely, he will explain in detail; And explaining that question, the intention... will fulfill [his] aspiration. 44. Born in a wealthy family, a brahmin skilled in mantras; Abandoning riches and grains, I went forth into homelessness. 45. Even when questioned briefly, I would explain at length; I fulfilled their intention, I pleased the best of bipeds. 46. Pleased by me, the Great Hero, the Self-Existent, the Foremost Person; Seated in the assembly of monks, he placed me at the forefront. 47. "The four analytical knowledges... ...the Buddha's teaching has been done." Thus indeed, the Elder, Venerable Mahākaccāna, spoke these verses. The third Apadāna is that of Elder Mahākaccāna. 4. The Apadāna of Elder Kāḷudāyi 48. When Padumuttara Buddha, the world's chief, the steadfast one; Was on his journey, wandering at that time. 49. Taking a fully bloomed lotus, a water lily, and jasmine, I; And taking excellent food, I gave it to the Teacher. 50. The Great Hero consumed the excellent, delicious food; And taking that flower, he showed it to the people. 51. "This is desirable, lovely, dear in the world, the supreme water-born flower; A very difficult thing was done by him, who gave me this flower. 52. He who offered the flower, and gave me excellent food; Him I shall praise, listen to my words. 53. 'Ten and eight times, he will be king of devas; Water lily, lotus, and jasmine, moreover. 54. 'By the result of his merit, endowed with divine fragrance; Making a canopy in the sky, he will hold it immediately. 55. 'And twenty-five times, he will be a wheel-turning monarch; He will rule the earth for five hundred, he will inhabit the world. 56. 'In a hundred thousand aeons, born in the Okkāka clan; Gotama by name, will be the Teacher in the world. 57. 'He, delighted in his own deeds, impelled by a wholesome root; The bringer of joy to the Sakyas, he will be a kinsman. ‘‘‘He, having later gone forth, urged by the root of merit; Having fully known all defilements, will attain Nibbāna, undefiled. ‘‘‘Having attained analytical knowledge, having done what was to be done, undefiled; Gotama, the kinsman of the world, will place him at the foremost position. ‘‘‘He, with his mind directed to exertion, peaceful, without substratum; Will be a disciple of the Teacher, by the name of Udāyī.’ ‘‘Lust, and hatred, and delusion, conceit, and hypocrisy are destroyed; Having fully known all defilements, I dwell undefiled. ‘‘I, ardent and skillful, also pleased the Fully Awakened One; And the Fully Awakened One, delighted, placed me at the foremost position. ‘‘The four analytical knowledges… …the Buddha’s teaching has been done.’’ Thus indeed, the Venerable Elder Kāḷudāyī spoke these verses; The fourth Apadāna of Elder Kāḷudāyī. 5. The Apadāna of Elder Mogharāja ‘‘But the Blessed One, the Seer of the Goal, self-existent, unconquered; Surrounded by the Sangha of monks, was proceeding along the road. ‘‘Surrounded by disciples, I came forth from my house; Having come forth there, I saw the leader of the world. ‘‘Having saluted the Fully Awakened One, placing my hands together on my head; Having made my mind clear, I praised the leader of the world. ‘‘As far as there are beings with form, or formless, or non-percipient; All of them are encompassed within your knowledge. ‘‘Just as one who encloses water with a fine-meshed net; Whatever creatures are in the water, they are within the net. ‘‘And those who have consciousness, with form and without form; All of them are encompassed within your knowledge. ‘‘You lift up this world, which is full of darkness; Having heard your Dhamma, they cross the stream of doubt. ‘‘In a world enveloped by ignorance, covered by darkness; When your knowledge shines, the darkness is dispelled. ‘‘You are the eye for all, the dispeller of great darkness; Having heard your Dhamma, many people attain Nibbāna. Having filled a basket with honey and a ram's lamb, taking them with both hands, I offered them to the Great Seer. 74. The Great Hero, the Great Sage, received them with his own hand. Having eaten, the Omniscient One ascended into the sky. 75. Standing in the air, the Teacher, the Seer of the Goal, the Bull among men, pleasing my mind, spoke these verses: 76. 'By this knowledge that has been praised, and the Buddha, the best, extolled, by that mental clarity, he will not go to a bad destination. 77. Fourteen times he will be king of the gods. On earth, he will rule
