The Story of the Vimāna of the Giver of Almsfood This high, gem-pillared mansion, all around twelve leagues; Seven hundred magnificent peaked chambers, with lapis lazuli pillars, adorned with gold, beautiful. You have attained divine power, of great might, when you were a human, what merit did you do? By what means are you thus of blazing might, and your radiance shines in all directions? "To him I gave a share, delighted, with my own hands; Having given a lump of sour gruel, I rejoice in the Nandanā grove. 1092. "Adorned, wearing garlands, well-clothed, with beautiful earrings, hair and beard trimmed; Wearing arm ornaments, glorious, in a divine mansion, just like the moon. 1095. "And divine lutes sound sweetly, groups of eight, well-trained, of beautiful form; And noble divine maidens, moving among the devas, dance, sing, and delight. 1096. Divine lutes sweetly sound, eight-stringed, skillfully played, beautiful; and noble divine maidens, celestial wanderers, dance, sing, and delight. 1103. When I was human among humans, seeing ascetics of good form, endowed with knowledge and conduct, glorious, very learned, virtuous, serene, with a serene mind, I respectfully gave abundant food and drink. 1106. Nandana Vimāna Story 1120 As the Nandana grove shines, the best of gardens, supreme among the gods; So likewise this mansion of yours, stands shining in the sky. 1121. That deva's son, delighted in mind... of what deed this is the fruit. 1123. This high mansion, with jeweled pillars, is twelve leagues all around; Seven hundred lofty pinnacled houses, with beryl pillars, adorned with gold, beautiful. 1127. There you sit, drink, and eat, and divine lutes play sweetly; Here are five divine sense-pleasures, and women dance, adorned in gold. 1128. By what is such your complexion... and your complexion shines in all directions? 1130. That deva's son, delighted in mind... of what deed this is the fruit. 1131. I, as a human among humans, in a desolate path, a walkway, I made it equal; And I planted park trees, and those of virtue were dear to me; Food and drink, with a clear mind, I gave abundant alms respectfully. 1132. "Therefore, such is my complexion... my complexion shines in all directions." The third, the Gem-Pillar Mansion. 4. The Story of the Golden Mansion 1134. "On a golden mountain, a mansion shining everywhere; covered with golden nets, adorned with a network of tiny bells. 1135. "Eight-sided, well-made pillars, all made of beryl; on each single side, seven jewels are set. 1136. "Of beryl and gold, of crystal and silver; with masāragalla gems and pearls, and with rubies. 1137. "The ground is variegated and delightful, no dust rises there; yellow gopāṇasī figures, are made to support the pinnacle. 1138. "And four staircases, are made in the four directions; with various jewel-inlays, it shines like the sun. 1139. "Four railings are there, divided and measured into sections; gleaming brightly, they shine, all around in the four directions. 1140. "In that excellent mansion, O greatly radiant son of the gods; you outshine in complexion, like the rising sun. 1141. "Is this the fruit of your generosity, or of your virtue? Or of your reverential salutation? Tell me that, as I ask you." 1142. That delighted son of the gods... whose deed this is the fruit. 1143. "I In Andhakavinda, of the Buddha, Kinsman of the Sun, I built a monastery for the Teacher, pleased with my own hands. 1144. There, perfumes and garlands, and requisites and unguents, I gave to the Teacher's monastery, with a mind utterly clear. Therefore, this has been obtained by me; I live at will in Nandana. 1145. The Story of the Mango Mansion. 1146. This high mansion with jewel pillars, twelve leagues all around. Seven hundred splendid pinnacled houses, with beryl pillars, adorned with gold, beautiful. 1147.
