"Who worships my feet, shining with power and glory; With an excellent complexion, illuminating all directions?" 858. "I was formerly a frog, living in the water; While listening to your Dhamma, a cowherd killed me. 859. "For a moment of mental clarity, see my power and glory; See my might, see my complexion and radiance. 860. "And those who for a long time, listened to your Dhamma, Gotama; They have attained the unshakeable state, where having gone, they do not grieve." The Mansion of the Frog Deva-putta, the first. 2. The Story of Revati's Mansion 861. "A man long absent, arrived safely from afar; Relatives, friends, and well-wishers, rejoice at his coming; 862. "Just so, one who has done good deeds, gone from this world to the next; His good deeds receive him, like dear relatives welcoming one who has arrived. 863. "Arise, Revati, you of very evil conduct, with unclosed doors, not given to generosity; We will take you where the miserable lament, those in hell, afflicted with suffering." 864. Having thus spoken, the messengers of Yama, those two great yakkhas with red eyes; Seizing Revati by each arm, they departed to the presence of the assembly of devas. 865. "Of sun-like color, beautiful, radiant, a mansion well- covered with a golden net; This mansion, crowded with people, shines like the rays of the sun. 866. "Groups of women, smeared with sandalwood paste, adorn the mansion on both sides; It appears with a color like the sun, who rejoices in the mansion, having attained heaven?" 867. "In Bārāṇasī there was one named Nandiya, a lay follower, unselfish, a generous giver, and kind; This mansion, crowded with people, shines like the rays of the sun. 868. "Groups of women, smeared with sandalwood paste, adorn the mansion on both sides; It appears with a color like the sun, he rejoices in the mansion, having attained heaven." 869. "I am Nandiya's wife, a householder, mistress of the entire household; I will now rejoice in my husband's mansion, I do not wish to see hell." 870. "This is your hell, you wicked one, you did no merit in the world of the living; For a stingy, angry, wicked person does not obtain the companionship of those who go to heaven." 871. "What is this, dung and urine, impurity is seen; What is this foul-smelling filth, what is this that wafts up?" 872. "This is called the 'Samsavaka' hell, a hundred men deep; Where for thousands of years, you will be cooked, Revatī." 873. "What evil was done by body, speech, or mind; By what was the 'Samsavaka' hell obtained, a hundred men deep?" 874. "Ascetics and brahmins, and other beggars; You deceived with false speech, that evil was done" ṃ by you. 875. “You have obtained a deep pit, one hundred men deep; There for thousands of years, you will burn, Revati. 876. “They cut off your hands, and also your feet, They cut off your ears, and also your nose; And then flocks of crows, having gathered, come together and eat you, writhing.” 877. “Please take me back, I will do much good; By giving, by living righteously, by restraint, and by self-control; Having done which, people are happy, and do not later regret.” 878. “Before you were negligent, now you lament; You will experience the result of deeds done by yourself.” 879. “Who, having gone from the deva-world to the human-world, being asked, would tell me this: ‘Give gifts to those who have laid down the rod, clothing, bedding, and food and drink; For a stingy, angry, wicked person does not obtain the companionship of those who go to heaven.’ 880. “So I, having gone from here, and having obtained a human birth; Generous, endowed with virtue, will do much good; By giving, by living righteously, by restraint, and by self-control. 881. “And I will plant groves, and build bridges in difficult places; And drinking places and wells, with a clear mind. 882. “On the fourteenth, the fifteenth, and the eighth of the fortnight; And the special fortnight, endowed with the eight factors. 883. “I will observe the Uposatha, always restrained in virtues; And I will not be negligent in giving, this I have seen myself.” 884. The Story of Chattamāṇava's Mansion 886. "He who is supreme among speakers among men, the Sakya sage, the Blessed One, whose task is done; Gone to the far shore, endowed with strength and vigor, go to that Fortunate One for refuge. 887. The Dhamma, free from passion, unmoving, sorrowless, the unconditioned Dhamma, not repulsive; This sweet, excellent, well-divided (Dhamma), go to this Dhamma for refuge. 888. And where gifts are said to bear great fruit, in the four pairs of pure persons; And those eight individuals, endowed with Dhamma, go to this Sangha for refuge. 889. The sun does not shine so brightly in the sky, nor does the moon shine, nor the constellation Puṣya; As this incomparable, greatly radiant (thing). Who are you, come to earth from heaven? 890. It cuts through the rays of the sun, its radiance extends more than twenty yojanas; It makes night like day, this pure, stainless, beautiful mansion. 891. With many lotuses, variegated white lotuses, strewn with many kinds of colorful flowers; Covered with a net of dustless, stainless gold, it shines in the sky like the sun. 892. With those wearing red and yellow garments, anointed with aloe, priyangu, and sandalwood; With bodies like shining gold, the sky is full as if with stars. 893. Men and women... Many women, of various colors, adorned with flowers, here are joyful. The winds, released, blow fragrant, spread with gold, covered with gold. 894. “Of what restraint is this fruit? By what karma’s result are you smoke-free? And how did you attain this mansion? Tell me, in order, when asked.” 895. “Here, on the path, I met a young man, who, compassionate, taught the Teacher. Having heard the Dhamma of your excellent jewel, I said, ‘I will do it,’ O Chatta. 896. “‘I go for refuge to the excellent, supreme Victor, and likewise to the Dhamma and the Sangha of monks.’ Thus I first said, Venerable Sir, afterwards, I did as you said. 897. “‘And do not commit various impure acts of killing living beings, for the wise do not praise lack of restraint towards living beings.’ Thus I first said, Venerable Sir, afterwards, I did as you said. 898. “‘And do not consider taking what is not given, even if protected by others.’ Thus I first said, Venerable Sir, afterwards, I did as you said. 899. “‘And do not go to the wives of others, protected by others; this is ignoble.’ Thus I first said, Venerable Sir, afterwards, I did as you said. 900. “‘And do not speak falsely, otherwise he said: The wise do not condemn false speech. Not so, I first said, venerable sir, afterwards I made your word just so. 901. “That by which a man’s perception departs, all that intoxicant you should avoid. Not so, I first said, venerable sir, afterwards I made your word just so. 902. “So I, having made these five trainings here, having practiced the Dhamma of the Tathāgata, went two ways among thieves; they killed me there for wealth. 903. “This much good I remember; beyond that, nothing else exists for me. By that well-done action, I was reborn in the heavens, desiring pleasures. 904. “See the result of a moment’s perception, of practice in accordance with the Dhamma; many of lesser deeds, looking upon me as if shining with glory, envy me. 905. “See, by a few teachings, I have gone to a good destiny and attained happiness; those who constantly hear the Dhamma, I think they touch the Deathless, the secure. 906. “Even a little done has great results; it is abundant in the Dhamma of the Tathāgata. See, covered by merit, he illuminates the earth just like the sun. 907. “What is this good? What should we practice?” Thus some, having met, consult. “May we, having again obtained human existence, live practicing, endowed with virtue.” 908. “The Teacher is very helpful and compassionate,” thus my mindfulness went day by day. ssa; So I have come to the truth, have compassion, let us hear the Dhamma again. 909. “Those who here abandon lust for sensual pleasures, and having given up the latent tendency to lust for existence and delusion; They do not enter a womb again, for they have attained final Nibbāna, they are cooled.” The third, the Vimāna of Chattamāṇava. 4. The Story of the Vimāna of the Crab-Juice Giver 910. “This high vimāna with jeweled pillars, is twelve yojanas all around; Seven hundred splendid pinnacled houses, with sapphire pillars, beautifully adorned. 911. “There you dwell, drink, and eat, and divine lutes play sweetly; Here are the five divine sensual pleasures, and women dance, adorned in gold. 912. “By what is your complexion such, by what do you prosper here; And all the enjoyments you desire arise for you. 913. “I ask you, great powerful deity, what merit did you do when you were human; By what are you thus shining with power, and your radiance illuminates all directions?” 914. That devaputta, delighted, questioned by Moggallāna; Being asked a question, explained of what kamma this was the fruit. 915. “A crab, causing mindfulness to arise, stood at the door; Made of gold, the ten-legged one shines. 916. “By that my complexion is such Oh, thereby it succeeds for me here; And riches arise for me, whatever are dear to my mind. 917. I will tell you, O bhikkhu of great power, what merit you did when you were a human; Therefore am I thus of blazing power, and my radiance shines in all directions.
