and what is carried would not perish. This meaning the Blessed One spoke. Therein this is said: For one person, in one eon, the accumulation of bones; Would be a heap like a mountain, thus said by the Great Seer. And this is indeed declared, the great mountain Vepulla; North of Gijjhakūṭa, in the Magadhan mountain range. When one sees the Noble Truths with right wisdom; Suffering, the origin of suffering, and the transcending of suffering; And the Noble Eightfold Path, leading to the cessation of suffering. That person, at most, having run on for seven times; Becomes an ender of suffering, through the destruction of all fetters. This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, thus have I heard. The Fourth. 5. Discourse on False Speech 25. This was spoken by the Blessed One, spoken by the Arahant, thus have I heard: For a person, monks, who has transgressed one teaching, I say that no evil deed is impossible for him to do. Which one teaching? That is, monks, intentional false speech. This meaning the Blessed One spoke. Therein this is said: For a being who has transgressed one teaching, who speaks falsely; Who has abandoned the other world, there is no evil undone. This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, thus have I heard. The Fifth. 6. Discourse on Giving 26. This was spoken by the Blessed One, spoken by the Arahant, thus have I heard: If, monks, beings knew the result of sharing gifts as I know it, they would not eat without giving, nor would the stain of stinginess possess their minds. Even if it were their last morsel, their last mouthful, they would not eat it without sharing, if there were recipients for them. But because, monks, beings do not know the result of sharing gifts as I know it, therefore they eat without giving, and the stain of stinginess possesses their minds. This meaning the Blessed One spoke. Therein this is s Thus it is said: "If beings would know, as declared by the Great Seer; The result of sharing, how it is greatly fruitful. Having removed the stain of stinginess, with a mind serene; They would give in due time to the noble ones, where a gift is greatly fruitful. Having given much food, a gift to those worthy of offerings; Departing from humanity here, the givers go to heaven. And those who have gone to heaven there, rejoice, desiring pleasures; The result of sharing, they experience, free from stinginess." This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, thus have I heard. The Sixth. 7. The Discourse on the Development of Loving-kindness 27. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, thus have I heard: "Whatever, monks, are grounds for meritorious deeds that are bound to rebirth, all of them are not worth a sixteenth part of the heart's release through loving-kindness. The heart's release through loving-kindness alone surpasses them, shines, blazes, and radiates. Just as, monks, whatever light there is of the starry forms, all of it is not worth a sixteenth part of the moon's light. The moon's light alone surpasses them, shines, blazes, and radiates. Even so, monks, whatever are grounds for meritorious deeds that are bound to rebirth, all of them are not worth a sixteenth part of the heart's release through loving-kindness. The heart's release through loving-kindness alone surpasses them, shines, blazes, and radiates. Just as, monks, in the last month of the rainy season, in autumn, when the sky is clear, free from clouds, the sun, ascending into the sky, dispels all darkness in the sky, shines, blazes, and radiates; Even so, monks, whatever are grounds for meritorious deeds that are bound to rebirth, all of them are not worth a sixteenth part of the heart's release through loving-kindness. The heart's release through loving-kindness alone surpasses them, shines and blazes... and shines. Just as, monks, at dawn in the night, the morning star shines and glows and radiates; even so, monks, whatever bases for making merit associated with attachment, all of them are not worth a sixteenth part of the liberation of mind through loving-kindness; the liberation of mind through loving-kindness, having surpassed them, shines and glows and radiates. The Blessed One spoke this meaning. Therein this is said: And whoever cultivates loving-kindness, boundless, mindful; His fetters become thin, seeing the destruction of attachments. If, with a mind free from ill-will, one practices loving-kindness towards even one being, one is skilled by that; And having compassion in mind for all beings, the noble one performs abundant merit. Whoever, having conquered the seven continents of the earth, went around performing sacrifices as a royal sage; the horse sacrifice, the human sacrifice, the 'all-stake', the 'drink of strength', the 'unbarred' sacrifices. Of a well-cultivated mind of loving-kindness, they do not experience even a sixteenth part; just as all star clusters (do not experience the light of) the moon. Whoever does not kill nor cause to kill, nor conquer nor cause to conquer; having loving-kindness towards all beings, for him there is no enmity with anyone. This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, thus have I heard. The Seventh. The Third Chapter is finished. And these seven suttas, and the previous twenty; The suttas in the One-Item section, comprise twenty-seven. The Book of Ones is finished.
