Homage to the Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Self-Enlightened One In the Minor Collection Itivuttaka Discourse Collection 1. The Chapter of Ones 1. The First Section 1. The Discourse on Greed 1. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I heard – “Monks, abandon one quality; I guarantee your non-return. Which one quality? Monks, abandon the one quality of greed; I guarantee your non-return.” The Blessed One spoke this meaning. And concerning this, it is said – “By which greed, beings, deluded, go to a bad destination; That greed, fully understanding, the seers abandon; Having abandoned, they do not return again, to this world, ever.” This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, so I heard. First. 2. The Discourse on Hatred 2. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I heard – “Monks, abandon one quality; I guarantee your non-return. Which one quality? Monks, abandon the one quality of hatred; I guarantee your non-return.” The Blessed One spoke this meaning. And concerning this, it is said – “By which hatred, beings, corrupted, go to a bad destination; That hatred, fully understanding, the seers abandon; Having abandoned, they do not return again, to this world, ever.” This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, so I heard. Second. 3. The Discourse on Delusion 3. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant, so I heard – “Monks, abandon one quality; I guarantee your non-return. Which one quality? Monks, abandon the one quality of delusion; I guarantee your non-return.” The Blessed One spoke this meaning. And concerning this, it is said – “By which delusion, beings, bewildered, go to a bad destination; That delusion, fully understanding, the seers abandon; Having abandoned, they do not return again, to this world, ever.” This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, so I heard. Third. 4. The Discourse on Anger 4. This was said by the Blessed One, by the Blessed One, spoken by the Arahant—thus have I heard: “Monks, abandon one quality; I am your guarantor for non-return. Which one quality? Monks, abandon anger, one quality; I am your guarantor for non-return.” This meaning the Blessed One spoke. Therein this is said: “By that anger, with which beings, angered, go to a bad destination; That anger, having fully understood, the seers abandon. Having abandoned, they do not return again to this world, ever.” This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, thus have I heard. The Fourth. 5. The Sutta on Denigration 5. This was spoken by the Blessed One, spoken by the Arahant—thus have I heard: “Monks, abandon one quality; I am your guarantor for non-return. Which one quality? Monks, abandon denigration, one quality; I am your guarantor for non-return.” This meaning the Blessed One spoke. Therein this is said: “By that denigration, with which beings, denigrated, go to a bad destination; That denigration, having fully understood, the seers abandon. Having abandoned, they do not return again to this world, ever.” This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, thus have I heard. The Fifth. 6. The Sutta on Conceit 6. This was spoken by the Blessed One, spoken by the Arahant—thus have I heard: “Monks, abandon one quality; I am your guarantor for non-return. Which one quality? Monks, abandon conceit, one quality; I am your guarantor for non-return.” This meaning the Blessed One spoke. Therein this is said: “By that conceit, with which beings, conceited, go to a bad destination; That conceit, having fully understood, the seers abandon. Having abandoned, they do not return again to this world, ever.” This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, thus have I heard. The Sixth. 7. The Sutta on Full Comprehension of All 7. This was spoken by the Blessed One, spoken by the Arahant—thus have I heard: “Monks, not fully knowing, not fully comprehending all, not dispassionating the mind there, not Abandoning, he is unable for the destruction of suffering. But, monks, fully knowing the all, fully understanding, dispassionating the mind there, abandoning, he is able for the destruction of suffering." This meaning the Blessed One spoke. Therein this is said: "Who, having known all from all sides, in all things does not delight; He indeed, having fully understood all, has gone beyond all suffering." This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, thus I heard. Seventh. 8. Sutta on the Full Understanding of Conceit 8. This was spoken by the Blessed One, spoken by the Arahant, thus I heard: "Monks, not fully knowing conceit, not fully understanding, not dispassionating the mind there, not abandoning, he is unable for the destruction of suffering. But, monks, fully knowing conceit, fully understanding, dispassionating the mind there, abandoning, he is able for the destruction of suffering." This meaning the Blessed One spoke. Therein this is said: "This populace, endowed with conceit, Bound by conceit, delights in becoming; Not fully understanding conceit, They are comers to renewed existence. And those who, having abandoned conceit, Are liberated by the destruction of conceit; They, having overcome the bonds of conceit, have gone beyond all suffering." This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, thus I heard. Eighth. 9. Sutta on the Full Understanding of Greed 9. This was spoken by the Blessed One, spoken by the Arahant, thus I heard: "Monks, not fully knowing greed, not fully understanding, not dispassionating the mind there, not abandoning, he is unable for the destruction of suffering. But, monks, fully knowing greed, fully understanding, dispassionating the mind there, abandoning, he is able for the destruction of suffering." This meaning the Blessed One spoke. Therein this is said: "By which greed, being greedy, beings go to a bad destination; That greed, having rightly known, the seers abandon; Having abandoned, they do not come again, to this world ever." This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, thus have I heard. The Ninth. 10. Discourse on the Full Understanding of Aversion 10. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant—thus have I heard: “Monks, not fully knowing, not fully understanding aversion, not dispassionating the mind there, not abandoning it, one is incapable of the destruction of suffering. But, monks, fully knowing, fully understanding aversion, dispassionating the mind there, abandoning it, one is capable of the destruction of suffering.” This meaning the Blessed One spoke. Therein this is said: “By which aversion beings, corrupted, go to a bad destination; That aversion, fully understanding, the seers abandon; Having abandoned, they never again come to this world.” This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, thus have I heard. The Tenth. The First Chapter is finished. Its summary: Greed, aversion, then delusion, anger, disparagement, conceit, all; From conceit, greed and aversion again two, they declare the first chapter. 2. The Second Chapter 1. Discourse on the Full Understanding of Delusion 11. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant—thus have I heard: “Monks, not fully knowing, not fully understanding delusion, not dispassionating the mind there, not abandoning it, one is incapable of the destruction of suffering. But, monks, fully knowing, fully understanding delusion, dispassionating the mind there, abandoning it, one is capable of the destruction of suffering.” This meaning the Blessed One spoke. Therein this is said: “By which delusion beings, deluded, go to a bad destination; That delusion, fully understanding, the seers abandon; Having abandoned, they never again come to this world.” This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, thus have I heard. The First. 2. Discourse on the Full Understanding of Anger 12. This was said by the Blessed One, said by the Arahant—thus have I heard: “Monks, not fully knowing, not fully understanding anger, not dispassionating the mind there, not abandoning it, one is incapable of the destruction of suffering. But, monks, fully knowing, fully understanding anger, dispassionating the mind there, abandoning it, one is capable of the destruction of suffering.” This meaning the Blessed One spoke. Therein this is said: By which anger, angered, beings go to suffering. That anger, fully understanding, the seers abandon. Having abandoned, they do not return to this world ever. This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, thus have I heard. The Second. 3. The Sutta on Full Understanding of Envy 13. This was spoken by the Blessed One, spoken by the Arahant, thus have I heard – "Monks, not fully knowing envy, not fully understanding it, not dispassionating the mind there, not abandoning it, one is incapable of the destruction of suffering. But, monks, fully knowing envy, fully understanding it, dispassionating the mind there, abandoning it, one is capable of the destruction of suffering." This meaning the Blessed One spoke. Therein it is said: By which envy, envious, beings go to suffering. That envy, fully understanding, the seers abandon. Having abandoned, they do not return to this world ever. This meaning too was spoken by the Blessed One, thus have I heard. The Third. 4. The Sutta on the Hindrance of Ignorance 14. This was spoken by the Blessed One, spoken by the Arahant, thus have I heard – "Monks, I do not see any other single hindrance by which, hindered, beings wander on and transmigrate for a long time, as by this hindrance of ignorance, monks. For indeed, monks, hindered by the hindrance of ignorance, beings wander on and transmigrate for a long time." This meaning the Blessed One spoke. Therein it is said: There is no other single thing by which beings, thus hindered, transmigrate day and night, as enveloped by delusion. And those who, having abandoned delusion, have shattered the mass of darkness, they do not transmigrate again, for a cause for them does not exist.
