Monks, for one with Right Knowledge, wrong wrong knowledge is worn away; and those many evil unwholesome states that arise conditioned by wrong knowledge are worn away for him; and conditioned by right knowledge many wholesome states reach the perfection of development. "For one with right liberation, bhikkhus, wrong liberation is worn away; and those many evil unwholesome states that arise conditioned by wrong liberation are worn away for him; and conditioned by right liberation many wholesome states reach the perfection of development. These, bhikkhus, are the ten things to be worn away." The Sixth. 7. The Cleansing Sutta 107. "There is, bhikkhus, in the southern provinces, something called 'cleansing'. There is food, drink, hard food, soft food, lickable food, drinkable food, dancing, singing, music. That 'cleansing' exists, bhikkhus; I do not say 'it does not exist'. But that 'cleansing', bhikkhus, is inferior, vulgar, of the common folk, ignoble, not conducive to welfare, not for disenchantment, not for dispassion, not for cessation, not for tranquility, not for direct knowledge, not for full enlightenment, not for Nibbāna. "But I, bhikkhus, will teach the noble cleansing, which cleansing is exclusively for disenchantment, for dispassion, for cessation, for tranquility, for direct knowledge, for full enlightenment, for Nibbāna; by resorting to which cleansing beings subject to birth are liberated from birth; beings subject to aging are liberated from aging; beings subject to death are liberated from death; beings subject to sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair are liberated from sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair. Listen to that, pay careful attention; I will speak." "Yes, venerable sir," those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this: "And what, bhikkhus, is that noble cleansing, which cleansing is exclusively for disenchantment, for dispassion, for cessation, for tranquility, for direct knowledge, for full enlightenment, for Nibbāna; by resorting to which cleansing beings subject to birth... Beings subject to birth are freed from birth, beings subject to aging are freed from aging, beings subject to death are freed from death, are beings subject to sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair freed from sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair? "For one with right view, bhikkhus, wrong view is washed away; and those many evil unwholesome states that arise due to wrong view are also washed away for him; and many wholesome states due to right view go to the fulfillment of development. For one with right intention, bhikkhus, wrong intention is washed away... For one with right speech, bhikkhus, wrong speech is washed away... For one with right action, bhikkhus, wrong action is washed away... For one with right livelihood, bhikkhus, wrong livelihood is washed away... For one with right effort, bhikkhus, wrong effort is washed away... For one with right mindfulness, bhikkhus, wrong mindfulness is washed away... For one with right concentration, bhikkhus, wrong concentration is washed away... For one with right knowledge, bhikkhus, wrong knowledge is washed away... For one with right liberation, bhikkhus, wrong liberation is washed away; and those many evil unwholesome states that arise due to wrong liberation are also washed away for him; and many wholesome states due to right liberation go to the fulfillment of development. This, bhikkhus, is that noble washing which conduces to complete disenchantment, to dispassion, to cessation, to peace, to direct knowledge, to full enlightenment, to Nibbana, by relying on which washing, beings subject to birth are freed from birth, beings subject to aging are freed from aging, beings subject to death are freed from death, beings subject to sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair are freed from sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair." The Seventh. 8. The Discourse on Physicians 108. "Physicians, bhikkhus, give purgatives to counteract even diseases arising from bile, phlegm for the removal of diseases not arising from bile, for the removal of diseases not arising from phlegm, for the removal of diseases not arising from wind. This, monks, is a purgative; I do not say 'it is not'. But this purgative, monks, sometimes succeeds, sometimes fails. And I, monks, will teach the noble purgative, which purgative always succeeds, never fails, by relying on which purgative, beings subject to birth are freed from birth, beings subject to aging are freed from aging, beings subject to death are freed from death, beings subject to sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair are freed from sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair. Listen to that, pay careful attention; I will speak." "Yes, venerable sir," those monks replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this: "And what, monks, is that noble purgative, which purgative always succeeds, never fails, by relying on which purgative, beings subject to birth are freed from birth, beings subject to aging are freed from aging, beings subject to death are freed from death, beings subject to sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair are freed from sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair? For one with right view, monks, wrong view is purged; and the many evil unwholesome states that arise from wrong view are also purged for him; and the many wholesome states that arise from right view reach fulfillment through development. For one with right intention, monks, wrong intention is purged... For one with right speech, monks, wrong speech is purged... For one with right action, monks, wrong action is purged... For one with right livelihood, monks, wrong livelihood is purged... For one with right effort, monks, wrong effort is purged... For one with right mindfulness, monks, wrong mindfulness is purged... For one with right concentration, monks, wrong concentration is purged... For one with right knowledge, bhikkhus, wrong knowledge is purged... For one with right liberation, bhikkhus, wrong liberation is purged; and those many evil unwholesome states that arise due to wrong liberation are also purged for him; and due to right liberation, many wholesome states reach the perfection of development. This, bhikkhus, is that noble purging, a purging that succeeds and does not fail, by which purging beings subject to birth are liberated from birth, beings subject to aging are liberated from aging, beings subject to death are liberated from death, beings subject to sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair are liberated from sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair. Thus ends the Eighth. 9. The Discourse on Purging 109. "Physicians, bhikkhus, administer purging for the counteraction of ailments arising from bile, for the counteraction of ailments arising from phlegm, for the counteraction of ailments arising from wind. Such purging exists, bhikkhus; I say it is not non-existent. But that purging, bhikkhus, sometimes succeeds and sometimes fails. "But I, bhikkhus, will teach the noble purging, a purging that succeeds and does not fail, by which purging beings subject to birth are liberated from birth, beings subject to aging are liberated from aging, beings subject to death are liberated from death, beings subject to sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair are liberated from sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair. Listen to that... "And what, bhikkhus, is that noble purging, a purging that succeeds and does not fail, by which purging beings subject to birth are liberated from birth, beings subject to aging are liberated from aging, beings subject to death are liberated from death, beings subject to sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair are liberated from sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair? "For one with right view, bhikkhus, wrong view is vomited forth; and those many evil unwholesome states that arise due to wrong view are also vomited forth for him; and due to right view, many wholesome states reach the perfection of development. For one with right intention, monks, wrong intention is vomited forth… For one with right speech, monks, wrong speech is vomited forth… For one with right action, monks, wrong action is vomited forth… For one with right livelihood, monks, wrong livelihood is vomited forth… For one with right effort, monks, wrong effort is vomited forth… For one with right mindfulness, monks, wrong mindfulness is vomited forth… For one with right concentration, monks, wrong concentration is vomited forth… For one with right knowledge, monks, wrong knowledge is vomited forth… For one with right liberation, monks, wrong liberation is vomited forth. And those many evil unwholesome states which arise conditioned by wrong liberation, they too are vomited forth by him. And conditioned by right liberation, many wholesome states go to the fulfillment of development. This, monks, is that noble disgorging, which disgorging succeeds and does not fail, by means of which disgorging, beings subject to birth are freed from birth… are freed from sorrow, lamentation, pain, displeasure, and despair. The Ninth. 10. The Discourse on Expelling These ten, monks, are states to be expelled. Which ten? For one with right view, monks, wrong view is expelled. And those many evil unwholesome states which arise conditioned by wrong view, they too are expelled by him. And conditioned by right view, many wholesome states go to the fulfillment of development. For one with right intention, monks, wrong intention is expelled… For one with right speech, monks, wrong speech is expelled… For one with right action, monks, wrong action is expelled… For one with right livelihood, monks, wrong livelihood is expelled… For one with right effort, monks, wrong effort is expelled…
