Chapter on Those Worthy of Offerings 95. "These seven, monks, are persons worthy of offerings, worthy of hospitality, worthy of salutation, an unsurpassed field of merit for the world. Which seven? Here, monks, a certain person dwells contemplating impermanence in the eye, perceiving impermanence, experiencing impermanence, constantly, continuously, without interruption, mentally inclining towards it, penetrating it with wisdom. He, through the destruction of the taints, by his own direct knowledge, in this very life, realizes and dwells in the taintless liberation of mind and liberation by wisdom. This, monks, is the first person worthy of offerings, worthy of hospitality, worthy of salutation, an unsurpassed field of merit for the world. Furthermore, monks, here a certain person dwells contemplating impermanence in the eye, perceiving impermanence, experiencing impermanence, constantly, continuously, without interruption, mentally inclining towards it, penetrating it with wisdom. For him, the exhaustion of the taints and the exhaustion of life occur simultaneously. This, monks, is the second person worthy of offerings, worthy of hospitality, worthy of salutation, an unsurpassed field of merit for the world. Furthermore, monks, here a certain person dwells contemplating impermanence in the eye, perceiving impermanence, experiencing impermanence, constantly, continuously, without interruption, mentally inclining towards it, penetrating it with wisdom. He, through the destruction of the five lower fetters, is one who attains Nibbāna in the interval; one who attains Nibbāna by reducing his lifespan; one who attains Nibbāna without much effort; one who attains Nibbāna with effort; one who is an upstream-goer, bound for the Akaniṭṭha realm. This, monks, is the seventh person worthy of offerings, worthy of hospitality, worthy of salutation, an unsurpassed field of merit for the world. These, monks, are the seven persons worthy of offerings, worthy of hospitality, worthy of salutation, an unsurpassed field of merit for the world." 96-622.
