These four actions, monks, have been declared by me, having realized them directly for myself. Which four? There is, monks, action that is black with black result; there is, monks, action that is white with white result; there is, monks, action that is black-and-white with black-and-white result; there is, monks, action that is neither black nor white, with neither black nor white result, leading to the exhaustion of action. And what, monks, is action that is black with black result? Here, monks, some individual has deprived a mother of life, has deprived a father of life, has deprived an Arahant of life, has caused the Tathāgata's blood to flow with malicious intent, has caused a schism in the Saṅgha. This, monks, is called action that is black with black result. And what, monks, is action that is white with white result? Here, monks, some individual abstains from the destruction of life, abstains from taking what is not given, abstains from sexual misconduct, abstains from false speech, abstains from divisive speech, abstains from harsh speech, abstains from idle chatter, is not covetous, has a mind free from ill-will, s... right view. This, monks, is called white kamma with white result. And what, monks, is kamma both dark and white, with both dark and white result? Here, monks, some person performs a bodily volitional formation both harmful and harmless… This, monks, is called kamma both dark and white, with both dark and white result. And what, monks, is kamma neither dark nor white, with neither dark nor white result, leading to the cessation of kamma? There, monks, that kamma which is dark with dark result… This, monks, is called kamma neither dark nor white, with neither dark nor white result, leading to the cessation of kamma. These, monks, are the four kammas declared by me, having directly known and realized them myself. The Fifth. 6. The Noble Path Discourse “Monks, these are the four kammas declared by me, having directly known and realized them myself. Which four? There is, monks, kamma dark with dark result; there is, monks, kamma white with white result; there is, monks, kamma both dark and white, with both dark and white result; there is, monks, kamma neither dark nor white, with neither dark nor white result, leading to the cessation of kamma. And what, monks, is kamma dark with dark result? Here, monks, some person performs a harmful bodily volitional formation… This, monks, is called kamma dark with dark result. And what, monks, is kamma white with white result? Here, monks, some person performs a harmless bodily volitional formation… This, monks, is called kamma white with white result. And what, monks, is kamma both dark and white, with both dark and white result? Here, monks, some person performs a bodily volitional formation both harmful and harmless… This, monks, is called kamma both dark and white, with both dark and white result. And what, monks, is kamma Which neither-dark-nor-bright, neither-dark-nor-bright-resultant kamma leads to the destruction of kamma? Right view... and so on... right concentration. This is called, monks, kamma that is neither-dark-nor-bright, neither-dark-nor-bright-resultant, leading to the destruction of kamma. These, monks, are the four kammas declared by me, having directly known and realized them myself. The Sixth. 7. The Discourse on the Factors of Awakening 238. "Monks, these four kammas... and so on... dark, dark-resultant... and so on... Here, monks, someone performs an afflicted bodily formation... and so on... This is called, monks, kamma that is dark, dark-resultant. "And what, monks, is kamma that is bright, bright-resultant? Here, monks, someone performs an unafflicted bodily formation... and so on... This is called, monks, kamma that is bright, bright-resultant. "And what, monks, is kamma that is dark-and-bright, dark-and-bright-resultant? Here, monks, someone performs both an afflicted and an unafflicted bodily formation... and so on... This is called, monks, kamma that is dark-and-bright, dark-and-bright-resultant. "And what, monks, is kamma that is neither-dark-nor-bright, neither-dark-nor-bright-resultant, leading to the destruction of kamma? The awakening factor of mindfulness, the awakening factor of investigation of phenomena, the awakening factor of energy, the awakening factor of rapture, the awakening factor of tranquility, the awakening factor of concentration, the awakening factor of equanimity – This is called, monks, kamma that is neither-dark-nor-bright, neither-dark-nor-bright-resultant, leading to the destruction of kamma. These, monks, are the four kammas declared by me, having directly known and realized them myself. The Seventh. 8. The Discourse on the Blameworthy 239. "Monks, endowed with four qualities, one is cast into hell as if brought there. Which four? With blameworthy bodily action, with blameworthy verbal action, with blameworthy mental action, with blameworthy view – endowed with these four qualities, one is cast into hell as if brought there. By four qualities, bhikkhus, endowed, as if carried and placed, so in heaven. Which four? By blameless bodily action, by blameless verbal action, by blameless mental action, by blameless view – By these four qualities, bhikkhus, endowed, as if carried and placed, so in heaven. The Eighth. 9. The Sutta on Non-Affliction 240. By four qualities, bhikkhus, endowed, as if carried and placed, so in hell. Which four? By afflictive bodily action, by afflictive verbal action, by afflictive mental action, by afflictive view – By these four qualities, bhikkhus, endowed, as if carried and placed, so in hell. By four qualities, bhikkhus, endowed, as if carried and placed, so in heaven. Which four? By non-afflictive bodily action, by non-afflictive verbal action, by non-afflictive mental action, by non-afflictive view – By these four qualities, bhikkhus, endowed, as if carried and placed, so in heaven. The Ninth. 10. The Sutta on Ascetics 241. "Herein, bhikkhus, is the first ascetic, herein the second ascetic, herein the third ascetic, herein the fourth ascetic; other doctrines are empty of ascetics" – Thus, bhikkhus, you may rightly roar the lion's roar. And who, bhikkhus, is the first ascetic? Herein, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, by the destruction of three fetters, is a stream-enterer, not subject to falling, certain, bound for enlightenment. This, bhikkhus, is the first ascetic. And who, bhikkhus, is the second ascetic? Herein, bhikkhus, a bhikkhu, by the destruction of three fetters, and by the attenuation of lust, hatred, and delusion, is a once-returner, having come to this world just one more time, makes an end of suffering. . This, monks, is the second recluse. “And what, monks, is the third recluse? Here, monks, a monk, with the destruction of the five lower fetters, is of spontaneous birth, there attaining final Nibbāna, not returning from that world. This, monks, is the third recluse. “And what, monks, is the fourth recluse? Here, monks, a monk, with the destruction of the taints, having realized for himself with direct knowledge, in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind, liberation through wisdom, enters upon and abides in it. This, monks, is the fourth recluse. “‘Here, monks, is the first recluse, here is the second recluse, here is the third recluse, here is the fourth recluse; other doctrines are empty of recluses’ – thus, monks, you should rightly roar this lion’s roar.” The Tenth. 11. The Discourse on the Advantages of a Good Person 242. “Relying on a good person, monks, four advantages are to be expected. What four? One grows in noble virtue, one grows in noble concentration, one grows in noble wisdom, one grows in noble liberation – relying on a good person, monks, these four advantages are to be expected.” The Eleventh.
