(24) 4. Chapter on Kamma 1. The Summary Discourse 232. "Monks, these four kammas have been declared by me, having directly known and realized them myself. Which four? There is, monks, kamma that is dark with dark result; there is, monks, kamma that is bright with bright result; there is, monks, kamma that is dark and bright with dark and bright result; there is, monks, kamma that is neither dark nor bright with neither dark nor bright result, leading to the exhaustion of kamma. These, monks, are the four kammas declared by me, having directly known and realized them myself." The First. 2. The Detailed Discourse 233. "Monks, these four kammas have been declared by me, having directly known and realized them myself. Which four? There is, monks, kamma that is dark with dark result; there is, monks, kamma that is bright with bright result; there is, monks, kamma that is dark and bright with dark and bright result; there is, monks, kamma that is neither dark nor bright with neither dark nor bright result, leading to the exhaustion of kamma. "And what, monks, is kamma that is dark with dark result? Here, monks, a certain person forms an afflicted bodily volitional formation, forms an afflicted verbal volitional formation, forms an afflicted mental volitional formation. Having formed an afflicted bodily volitional formation, having formed an afflicted verbal volitional formation, having formed an afflicted mental volitional formation, he reappears in an afflicted world. When he has reappeared in that afflicted world, afflicted contacts touch him. Being touched by afflicted contacts, he experiences an afflicted feeling, exclusively painful, just like beings in hell. This, monks, is called kamma that is dark with dark result. "And what, monks, is kamma that is bright with bright result? ripening? Here, monks, some person forms a blameless bodily formation, forms a blameless verbal formation, forms a blameless mental formation. Having formed a blameless bodily formation, having formed a blameless verbal formation, having formed a blameless mental formation, he reappears in a blameless world. Having reappeared in that blameless world, blameless contacts touch him. Being touched by blameless contacts, he experiences blameless feeling, exclusively pleasant, just like the Radiant Devas. This is called, monks, white kamma with white ripening. And what, monks, is black-white kamma with black-white ripening? Here, monks, some person forms both blameworthy and blameless bodily formations, forms both blameworthy and blameless verbal formations, forms both blameworthy and blameless mental formations. Having formed both blameworthy and blameless bodily formations, having formed both blameworthy and blameless verbal formations, having formed both blameworthy and blameless mental formations, he reappears in a world of both blameworthy and blameless. Having reappeared in that world of both blameworthy and blameless, both blameworthy and blameless contacts touch him. Being touched by both blameworthy and blameless contacts, he experiences both blameworthy and blameless feeling, mixed pleasure and pain, just like humans, and some devas, and some in the lower realms. This is called, monks, black-white kamma with black-white ripening. And what, monks, is neither-black-nor-white kamma with neither-black-nor-white ripening, which leads to the destruction of kamma? Therein, monks, the intention for the abandoning of this kamma that is black with black ripening, and this. the intention for the abandoning of white karma with white results, the intention for the abandoning of black and white karma with black and white results— this, monks, is called karma that is neither black nor white, with neither black nor white results, leading to the destruction of karma. These, monks, are the four karmas that I have declared after realizing and experiencing them myself.” The Second. 3. The Soṇakāyana Sutta 234. Then the brahmin Sikhāmoggallāna approached the Blessed One. Having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Blessed One. Having concluded the courteous and memorable talk, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the brahmin Sikhāmoggallāna said to the Blessed One: “Some days ago, earlier than today, the young man Soṇakāyana approached me. Having approached, he said to me: ‘The recluse Gotama teaches the non-doing of all karma. And teaching the non-doing of all karma, he declares the annihilation of the world. This world, good sir, is karma-true, it stands by the undertaking of karma.’” “I do not even know, brahmin, of having seen the young man Soṇakāyana. How then could there have been such a conversation! These, brahmin, are four karmas that I have declared after realizing and experiencing them myself. Which are the four? There is, brahmin, black karma with black results. There is, brahmin, white karma with white results. There is, brahmin, black and white karma with black and white results. There is, brahmin, karma that is neither black nor white, with neither black nor white results, leading to the destruction of karma. “And what, brahmin, is black karma with black results? Here, brahmin, someone performs an afflictive bodily formation, performs an afflictive verbal formation, performs an afflictive mental formation. Having performed an afflictive bodily formation, having performed an afflictive having formed harmful speech formations, having formed harmful mental formations, he is reborn into a harmful world. Being reborn into that harmful world, harmful contacts touch him. Being touched by harmful contacts, he experiences a harmful feeling, entirely painful, just like beings in hell. This, brahmin, is called dark kamma with dark result. And what, brahmin, is white kamma with white result? Here, brahmin, some individual forms harmless bodily formations, forms harmless speech formations, forms harmless mental formations. Having formed harmless bodily formations, having formed harmless speech formations, having formed harmless mental formations, he is reborn into a harmless world. Being reborn into that harmless world, harmless contacts touch him. Being touched by harmless contacts, he experiences a harmless feeling, entirely pleasant, just like the Subhakiṇha devas. This, brahmin, is called white kamma with white result. And what, brahmin, is dark-white kamma with dark-white result? Here, brahmin, some individual forms both harmful and harmless bodily formations, forms both harmful and harmless speech formations, forms both harmful and harmless mental formations. Having formed both harmful and harmless bodily formations, having formed both harmful and harmless speech formations, having formed both harmful and harmless mental formations, he is reborn into a world that is both harmful and harmless. Being reborn into that world that is both harmful and harmless, both harmful and harmless contacts touch him. Being touched by both harmful and harmless contacts, He experiences feeling both harmful and harmless, mixed with pleasure and pain, just as some humans, some devas, and some in the lower realms. This is called, brahmin, kamma that is dark and bright, with dark and bright result. And what, brahmin, is kamma that is neither dark nor bright, with neither dark nor bright result, leading to the exhaustion of kamma? Therein, brahmin, the intention for the abandonment of kamma that is dark with dark result, the intention for the abandonment of kamma that is bright with bright result, the intention for the abandonment of kamma that is dark and bright with dark and bright result – this is called, brahmin, kamma that is neither dark nor bright, with neither dark nor bright result, leading to the exhaustion of kamma. These, brahmin, are the four kinds of kamma declared by me, having realized and directly experienced them myself. The third. 4. The First Training Rule Discourse. 235. "These four kinds of kamma, bhikkhus, have been declared by me, having realized and directly experienced them myself. Which four? There is, bhikkhus, kamma that is dark with dark result; there is, bhikkhus, kamma that is bright with bright result; there is, bhikkhus, kamma that is dark and bright with dark and bright result; there is, bhikkhus, kamma that is neither dark nor bright, with neither dark nor bright result, leading to the exhaustion of kamma. And what, bhikkhus, is kamma that is dark with dark result? Here, bhikkhus, some person is a killer of living beings, a taker of what is not given, a wrongdoer in sensual pleasures, a speaker of falsehoods, one who indulges in intoxicating drinks and drugs that lead to heedlessness. This is called, bhikkhus, kamma that is dark with dark result. And what, bhikkhus, is kamma that is bright with bright result? Here, bhikkhus, some person abstains from killing living beings, abstains from taking what is not given, abstains from wrongdoing in sensual pleasures, abstains from speaking falsehoods, abstains from intoxicating drinks and drugs that lead to heedlessness. This is called, bhikkhus, kamma that is bright with bright result. And what, bhikkhus, is kamma that is dark and bright... What is black-and-white with black-and-white result? Here, monks, some individual forms a bodily volitional formation that is both harmful and harmless... ... This, monks, is called action that is black-and-white with black-and-white result. And what, monks, is action that is neither black nor white, with neither black nor white result, leading to the exhaustion of action? Therein, monks, that action which is black with black result... ... This, monks, is called action that is neither black nor white, with neither black nor white result, leading to the exhaustion of action. These four actions, monks, have been declared by me, having realized them directly for myself. The Fourth. 5. The Second Training Precepts Discourse 236.
