Here again, Master Gotama, a certain person speaks praise of one deserving praise, true, factual, at the right time, but does not speak dispraise of one deserving dispraise, true, factual, at the right time. Here again, Master Gotama, a certain person neither speaks dispraise of one deserving dispraise, true, factual, at the right time, nor speaks praise of one deserving praise, true, factual, at the right time. For what reason? Because, ho, Gotama, this equanimity is excellent. Potaliya, these four persons are found existing in the world. Which four? ... These, Potaliya, are the four persons found existing in the world. Among these four persons, Potaliya, the person who speaks dispraise of one deserving dispraise, being true, factual, and timely, and speaks praise of one deserving praise, being true, factual, and timely; this one among these four persons is more excellent and more refined. For what reason? Because, Potaliya, this knowing the right time in each case is excellent. Ho, Gotama, these four persons are found existing in the world. Which four? ... These, ho, Gotama, are the four persons found existing in the world. Among these four persons, ho, Gotama, the person who speaks dispraise of one deserving dispraise, being true, factual, and timely, and speaks praise of one deserving praise, being true, factual, and timely; this person pleases me among these four persons, as more excellent and more refined. For what reason? Because, ho, Gotama, this knowing the right time in each case is excellent. Excellent, ho, Gotama! Excellent, ho, Gotama! Just as, ho, Gotama, one might set upright what was overturned, or reveal what was hidden, or show the way to one who was lost, or hold up a lamp in the darkness so that those with eyes might see forms— even so has the Dhamma been made clear by the venerable Gotama in many ways. I go for refuge to the venerable Gotama, I go for refuge to the Dhamma and the community of monks. May Venerable Gotama acknowledge me as a lay follower, gone for refuge, from this day forth, as long as life lasts. The Tenth. The Asura Chapter, the Fifth.
