Here, monks, a monk develops the faculty of faith, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment. Here, monks, a monk develops the faculty of energy, based on seclusion... ...and so on... This, monks, is called the path leading to the unconditioned. ...and so on... And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Here, monks, a monk develops the faculty of mindfulness... ...and so on... This, monks, is called the path leading to the unconditioned. ...and so on... And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Here, monks, a monk develops the faculty of concentration... ...and so on... This, monks, is called the path leading to the unconditioned. ...and so on... And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Here, monks, a monk develops the faculty of wisdom, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment. Here, monks, a bhikkhu develops the power of concentration... This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned... And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Here, monks, a bhikkhu develops the power of wisdom, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment. Here, monks, a bhikkhu develops the investigation of phenomena factor of awakening... develops the energy factor of awakening... develops the rapture factor of awakening... develops the tranquility factor of awakening... develops the concentration factor of awakening... develops the equanimity factor of awakening, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned... And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Here, monks, a bhikkhu develops right view, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned... And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Here, monks, a bhikkhu develops right intention... develops right speech... develops right action... ...develops... right livelihood... develops... right effort... develops... right mindfulness... And the unconditioned, monks, I will teach you, and the path leading to the unconditioned. Listen to that. And what, monks, is the unconditioned...? And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Here, monks, a monk develops right concentration, based on seclusion, based on dispassion, based on cessation, culminating in relinquishment. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned. Thus, monks, the unconditioned has been taught by me to you, the path leading to the unconditioned has been taught. What, monks, a teacher should do for his disciples, out of concern for their welfare, out of compassion, that has been done by me for you. These, monks, are the roots of trees; these are empty dwellings. Meditate, monks, do not be heedless; do not be remorseful later. This is our instruction to you. The First. 2. And what, monks, is the very difficult to see...? ...and the unaging, monks, I will teach you, and the path leading to the unaging. Listen to that. And what, monks, is the unaging...? ...and the permanent, monks, Monks, I will teach you the constant and the path leading to the constant. Listen to that. And what, monks, is the constant? ... And monks, I will teach you the unobserved and the path leading to the unobserved. Listen to that. And what, monks, is the unobserved? ... And monks, I will teach you the auspicious and the path leading to the auspicious. Listen to that. And what, monks, is the auspicious? ... And monks, I will teach you the secure and the path leading to the secure. Listen to that. And what, monks, is the secure? ... And monks, I will teach you the destruction of craving and the path leading to the destruction of craving. Listen to that. And what, monks, is the destruction of craving? ... And monks, I will teach you the wonderful and the path leading to the wonderful. Listen to that. And what, monks, is the wonderful? ... And monks, I will teach you the amazing and the path leading to the amazing. Listen to that. And what, monks, is the amazing? ... And monks, I will teach you the harmless and the path leading to the harmless. Listen to that. And what, monks, is the harmless? ... And monks, I will teach you the harmless state and the path leading to the harmless state. Listen to that. And what, monks, is the harmless state? ... And monks, I will teach you Nibbana and the path leading to Nibbana. Listen to that. And what, monks, is Nibbana? ... Monks, Nibbana... And non-affliction, monks, I will teach you, and the path leading to non-affliction. Listen to that. And what, monks, is non-affliction?... And dispassion, monks, I will teach you, and the path leading to dispassion. Listen to that. And what, monks, is dispassion?... And purity, monks, I will teach you, and the path leading to purity. Listen to that. And what, monks, is purity?... And release, monks, I will teach you, and the path leading to release. Listen to that. And what, monks, is release?... And non-attachment, monks, I will teach you, and the path leading to non-attachment. Listen to that. And what, monks, is non-attachment?... And the island, monks, I will teach you, and the path leading to the island. Listen to that. And what, monks, is the island?... And the shelter, monks, I will teach you, and the path leading to the shelter. Listen to that. And what, monks, is the shelter?... And protection, monks, I will teach you, and the path leading to protection. Listen to that. And what, monks, is protection?... And refuge, monks, I will teach you, and the path leading to refuge. Listen to that. And what, monks, is refuge?... ...instruction? This is the thirty-second. 33. The Discourse on the Ultimate Goal And the ultimate goal, monks, I will teach you, and the path leading to the ultimate goal. Listen to that. And what, monks, is the ultimate goal? That, monks, which is the destruction of lust, the destruction of hatred, the destruction of delusion – this is called, monks, the ultimate goal. And what, monks, is the path leading to the ultimate goal? Mindfulness of the body. This is called, monks, the path leading to the ultimate goal. Thus, monks, has the ultimate goal been taught by me to you, and the path leading to the ultimate goal has been taught. Whatever, monks, a teacher should do for his disciples, out of concern, out of compassion, seeking their welfare, that has been done by me for you. These, monks, are the roots of trees; these are empty dwellings. Meditate. Come, monks, do not be heedless; Do not be regretful afterwards. This is our instruction to you.
