The Chapter on the Unconditioned First Section Discourse on Mindfulness of the Body At Sāvatthī. And the Unconditioned, monks, I shall teach you, and the path leading to the Unconditioned. Listen to that. And what, monks, is the Unconditioned? That, monks, which is the destruction of lust, the destruction of hatred, the destruction of delusion – this is called, monks, the Unconditioned. And what, monks, is the path leading to the Unconditioned? Mindfulness of the body. This is called, monks, the path leading to the Unconditioned. Thus, monks, the Unconditioned has been taught to you by me, the path leading to the Unconditioned has been taught. What a teacher should do, monks, out of concern for his disciples' welfare, out of compassion, showing compassion, that has been done by me for you. These, monks, are roots of trees, these are empty dwellings. Meditate, monks, do not be heedless; do not be remorseful later. This is our instruction to you. First. Discourse on Tranquility and Insight And the Unconditioned, monks, I shall teach you, and the path leading to the Unconditioned. Listen to that. And what, monks, is the Unconditioned? That, monks, which is the destruction of lust, the destruction of hatred, the destruction of delusion – this is called, monks, the Unconditioned. And what, monks, is the path leading to the Unconditioned? Tranquility and insight. This is called, monks, the path leading to the Unconditioned. Second. Discourse on Initial and Sustained Thought And what, monks, is the path leading to the Unconditioned? Concentration with initial thought and sustained thought, concentration with only sustained thought, concentration without initial thought and without sustained thought – this is called, monks, the path leading to the Unconditioned. Third. Discourse on Emptiness Concentration And what, monks, is the path leading to the Unconditioned? Emptiness concentration, signless concentration, undirected concentration – this is called, monks, the path leading to the Unconditioned. Fourth. Discourse on the Foundations of Mindfulness And what, monks, is the path leading to the Unconditioned? The four foundations of mindfulness. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned... The fifth. 6. Discourse on Right Exertions 371. "And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? The four right exertions. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned... The sixth. 7. Discourse on Bases of Power 372. "And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? The four bases of power. What a teacher, seeking the welfare of his disciples, out of compassion, should do for them, that has been done by me for you. Here, monks, are the roots of trees, here are empty dwellings. Meditate, monks, do not be heedless; do not later regret. This is our instruction to you." The eleventh. The First Chapter. The Summary of That – Body, tranquility, with initial thought, emptiness, foundations of mindfulness; Right exertions, bases of power, faculties, powers, factors of awakening; By the path, the eleventh, this summary is declared. 2. The Second Chapter 1. Discourse on the Unconditioned 377. "Monks, I will teach you the unconditioned and the path leading to the unconditioned. Listen to that. And what, monks, is the unconditioned? What is the unconditioned? Monks, the destruction of lust, the destruction of hatred, the destruction of delusion – this is called, monks, the unconditioned. And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Tranquility. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned. Thus, monks, the unconditioned has been taught by me to you, the path leading to the unconditioned has been taught. Whatever, monks, a teacher should do for his disciples, out of concern, out of compassion, that has been done by me for you. These, monks, are roots of trees, these are empty dwellings. Concentration with initial and sustained application. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned... ...And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Concentration without initial application, with only sustained application. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned... ...And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Concentration without initial or sustained application. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned... And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Emptiness concentration. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned... ...And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Signless concentration. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned... ...And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Undirected concentration. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned... And what And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Here, monks, a monk dwells observing the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure concerning the world. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned. And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Here, monks, a monk dwells observing feelings in feelings, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure concerning the world. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned. And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Here, monks, a monk dwells observing mind in mind, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure concerning the world. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned. And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Here, monks, a monk dwells observing phenomena in phenomena, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, having removed covetousness and displeasure concerning the world. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned. And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Here, monks, a monk for the non-arising of unarisen evil unwholesome states, generates desire, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned. And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Here, monks, a monk for the abandoning of arisen evil unwholesome states, generates desire, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned. And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Here, monks, a monk for the arising of unarisen wholesome states, generates desire, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned. And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Here, monks, a monk for the maintenance, non-disappearance, increase, development, cultivation, and fulfillment of arisen wholesome states, generates desire, endeavors, arouses energy, exerts the mind, and strives. This is called, monks, the path leading to the unconditioned. ...and so on... And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Here, monks, a monk develops the basis for spiritual power, endowed with concentration due to desire, and the volitional formations of exertion. This, monks, is called the path leading to the unconditioned. ...and so on... And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Here, monks, a monk develops the basis for spiritual power, endowed with concentration due to energy, and the volitional formations of exertion. This, monks, is called the path leading to the unconditioned. ...and so on... And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Here, monks, a monk develops the basis for spiritual power, endowed with concentration due to mind, and the volitional formations of exertion. This, monks, is called the path leading to the unconditioned. ...and so on... And what, monks, is the path leading to the unconditioned? Here, monks, a monk develops the basis for spiritual power, endowed with concentration due to investigation, and the volitional formations of exertion. This, monks, is called the path leading to the unconditioned. ...and so on...
