She is not beautiful, not wealthy, not virtuous, she is lazy, and does not bear children – By these five qualities, monks, a woman endowed with them is utterly displeasing to a man. By five qualities, monks, a woman endowed with them is utterly pleasing to a man. Which five? She is beautiful, and wealthy, and virtuous, and skillful, not lazy, and bears children – By these five qualities, monks, a woman endowed with them is utterly pleasing to a man. First. 2. Discourse on Men By five qualities, monks, a man endowed with them is utterly displeasing to a woman. Which five? He is not handsome, not wealthy, not virtuous, he is lazy, and does not produce offspring – By these five qualities, monks, a man endowed with them is utterly displeasing to a woman. By five qualities, monks, a man endowed with them is utterly pleasing to a woman. Which five? He is handsome, and wealthy, and virtuous, and skillful, not lazy, and produces offspring – By these five qualities, monks, a man endowed with them is utterly pleasing to a woman. Second. 3. Discourse on Unique Sufferings These five, monks, are unique sufferings for women, which women experience, apart from men. Which five? Here, monks, a woman, while still young, goes to her husband's family, separated from her relatives. This, monks, is the first unique suffering for women, which a woman experiences, apart from men. Furthermore, monks, A woman has her period. This, monks, is a woman's second peculiar suffering, which a woman experiences, apart from men. Furthermore, monks, a woman becomes pregnant. This, monks, is a woman's third peculiar suffering, which a woman experiences, apart from men. Furthermore, monks, a woman gives birth. This, monks, is a woman's fourth peculiar suffering, which a woman experiences, apart from men. Furthermore, monks, a woman attends upon a man. This, monks, is a woman's fifth peculiar suffering, which a woman experiences, apart from men. These, monks, are the five peculiar sufferings for a woman, which a woman experiences, apart from men. Third. 4. Discourse on Three Qualities 283. Monks, a woman endowed with three qualities, for the most part, with the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, a downfall, hell. Which three? Here, monks, a woman in the morning dwells in the home with a mind overcome by the stain of stinginess. In the midday, she dwells in the home with a mind overcome by envy. In the evening, she dwells in the home with a mind overcome by sensual lust. With these three qualities, monks, a woman endowed, for the most part, with the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, a downfall, hell. Fourth. 5. Discourse on the Angry One 284. Then indeed, Venerable Anuruddha approached the Blessed One; having approached, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, Venerable Anuruddha said this to the Blessed One: "Here, venerable sir, I see a woman with the purified divine eye, surpassing human sight, with the breaking up of the body, after death, reborn in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, a downfall, hell." By how many, indeed, venerable sir, qualities endowed is a woman, with the breaking up of the body, after death, reborn in the lower realms, a bad destination, a state of woe, hell? "By five, indeed, Anuruddha, qualities endowed is a woman, with the breaking up of the body, after death, reborn in the lower realms, a bad destination, a state of woe, hell. Which five? She is faithless, she is shameless, she is without moral dread, she is angry, she is unwise. By these, indeed, Anuruddha, five qualities endowed is a woman, with the breaking up of the body, after death, reborn in the lower realms, a bad destination, a state of woe, hell." The Fifth. 6. Upanāhīsuttaṃ "By five, Anuruddha, qualities endowed is a woman, with the breaking up of the body, after death, reborn in the lower realms, a bad destination, a state of woe, hell. Which five? She is faithless, she is shameless, she is without moral dread, she is resentful, she is unwise. By these, indeed, Anuruddha, five qualities endowed is a woman, with the breaking up of the body, after death, reborn in the lower realms, a bad destination, a state of woe, hell." The Sixth. 7. Issukīsuttaṃ "By five, Anuruddha, qualities endowed is a woman, with the breaking up of the body, after death, reborn in the lower realms, a bad destination, a state of woe, hell. Which five? She is faithless, she is shameless, she is without moral dread, she is envious, she is unwise. By these, indeed, Anuruddha, five qualities endowed is a woman, with the breaking up of the body, after death, reborn in the lower realms, a bad destination, a state of woe, hell." The Seventh. 8. The thirteenth. 14. The Discourse on the Five Enmities 293. "Anuruddha, a woman endowed with five qualities ... is reborn in hell. With which five? She is a killer of living beings, she is one who takes what is not given, she is one who engages in sexual misconduct, she is a speaker of falsehoods, she is one who indulges in fermented and distilled liquors which are the basis of heedlessness – indeed, Anuruddha, a woman endowed with these five qualities, after the breaking up of the body, after death, is reborn in a state of deprivation, a bad destination, perdition, in hell." Its summary – Woman and man, unique, three qualities; Angry and resentful, envious and stingy; Transgressing and immoral, unlearned and lazy; Forgetful, five enmities, declared in the dark side. 2.
