who has reached the world’s end, who has lived the holy life, having known the world’s end, tranquil, does not long for this world or the next.” 7. The Discourse with Nanda 108. Standing to one side, the deva Nanda spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One: “Times pass, nights glide by, the stages of life gradually abandon one; Seeing this danger in death, one should do deeds of merit that bring happiness.” “Times pass, nights glide by, the stages of life gradually abandon one; Seeing this danger in death, one should abandon worldly desires, seeking peace.” 8. Standing to one side, the deva Nandivisāla addressed the Blessed One with a verse: “Four-wheeled, nine-doored, full, bound by greed; Born of mud, Great Hero, how will the journey be?” “Having cut the strap and the thong, and evil craving and greed; Having uprooted craving with its root, thus will the journey be.” 9. The Discourse with Susima 110. Thus I heard. At Sāvatthī. Then the venerable Ānanda Then he approached the Blessed One; Having approached, he saluted the Blessed One and sat down to one side. To Venerable Ananda, sitting to one side, the Blessed One said this: "Do you also, Ananda, approve of Sariputta?" "Indeed, venerable sir, who that is not foolish, not malicious, not deluded, not with a perverted mind, would not approve of Venerable Sariputta? Wise, venerable sir, is Venerable Sariputta. Greatly wise, venerable sir, is Venerable Sariputta. Widely wise, venerable sir, is Venerable Sariputta. Ready-witted, venerable sir, is Venerable Sariputta. Swiftly wise, venerable sir, is Venerable Sariputta. Sharply wise, venerable sir, is Venerable Sariputta. Penetratingly wise, venerable sir, is Venerable Sariputta. Of few wishes, venerable sir, is Venerable Sariputta. Contented, venerable sir, is Venerable Sariputta. Secluded, venerable sir, is Venerable Sariputta. Unentangled, venerable sir, is Venerable Sariputta. Energetic, venerable sir, is Venerable Sariputta. An instructor, venerable sir, is Venerable Sariputta. Patient in speech, venerable sir, is Venerable Sariputta. A reprover, venerable sir, is Venerable Sariputta. A blamer of evil, venerable sir, is Venerable Sariputta. Indeed, venerable sir, who that is not foolish, not malicious, not deluded, not with a perverted mind, would not approve of Venerable Sariputta?" "So it is, Ananda, so it is, Ananda! Indeed, Ananda, who that is not foolish, not malicious, not deluded, not with a perverted mind, would not approve of Sariputta? Wise, Ananda, is Sariputta. Greatly wise, Ananda, is Sariputta. Of few wishes, Ananda, is Sariputta. Contented, Ananda, is Sariputta. Secluded, Ananda, is Sariputta. Unentangled, Ananda, is Sariputta. Energetic, Ananda, is Sariputta. An instructor, Ananda, is Sariputta. Patient in speech, Ananda, is Sariputta." He is a reprover, Ananda, Sariputta. He is a censurer of evil, Ananda, Sariputta. To whom indeed, Ananda, who is not foolish, not malicious, not deluded, not of perverted mind, would Sariputta not be pleasing? Then indeed Susima, the deva-son, while the praise of Venerable Sariputta was being spoken, surrounded by a great assembly of deva-sons, approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he stood to one side. Standing to one side, indeed Susima, the deva-son, said this to the Blessed One: "So it is, Blessed One, so it is, Fortunate One. To whom indeed, Venerable Sir, who is not foolish, not malicious, not deluded, not of perverted mind, would Venerable Sariputta not be pleasing? He is wise, Venerable Sir, Venerable Sariputta. He has great wisdom, Venerable Sir, he has extensive wisdom, Venerable Sir, he has joyful wisdom, Venerable Sir, he has swift wisdom, Venerable Sir, he has sharp wisdom, Venerable Sir, he has penetrating wisdom, Venerable Sir, he is of few wishes, Venerable Sir, he is content, Venerable Sir, he is secluded, Venerable Sir, he is unentangled, Venerable Sir, he has aroused energy, Venerable Sir, he is an admonisher, Venerable Sir, he is patient in speech, Venerable Sir, he is a reprover, Venerable Sir, he is a censurer of evil, Venerable Sir, Venerable Sariputta. To whom indeed, Venerable Sir, who is not foolish, not malicious, not deluded, not of perverted mind, would Venerable Sariputta not be pleasing? "Indeed I too, Venerable Sir, whenever I approach an assembly of deva-sons, I hear this same abundant sound – 'Venerable Sariputta is wise; Venerable Sariputta has great wisdom, Venerable Sariputta has extensive wisdom, Venerable Sariputta has joyful wisdom, Venerable Sariputta has swift wisdom, Venerable Sariputta has sharp wisdom, Venerable Sariputta has penetrating wisdom, Venerable Sariputta is of few wishes, Venerable Sariputta is content, Venerable Sariputta is secluded, Venerable Sariputta is unentangled, Venerable Sariputta has aroused energy, Venerable Sariputta is an admonisher, Venerable Sariputta is patient in speech, Venerable Sariputta is a reprover, Venerable Sariputta is a censurer of evil.' To whom indeed, Venerable Sir, who is not foolish, not malicious, not deluded, not of perverted mind, would Venerable Sariputta not be pleasing?" Then indeed, of Susima, the deva-son, the assembly of deva-sons, Venerable Therefore, as the praise of Sāriputta was spoken, delighted, joyful, filled with joy and happiness, various kinds of radiant colors manifested. “Just as a beautiful beryl gem, of good origin, eight-faceted, well-polished, placed on a yellow blanket, shines, glows, and radiates; even so, for Susima the devaputta, as the praise of Venerable Sāriputta was spoken, his assembly of devaputtas, delighted, joyful, filled with joy and happiness, manifested various kinds of radiant colors. “Just as a Jambonada gold coin, skillfully struck by a clever goldsmith's son in a crucible, placed on a yellow blanket, shines, glows, and radiates; even so, for Susima the devaputta, as the praise of Venerable Sāriputta was spoken, his assembly of devaputtas, delighted, joyful, filled with joy and happiness, manifested various kinds of radiant colors. “Just as in the autumn season, when the sky is clear and cloudless, at dawn, the morning star shines, glows, and radiates; even so, for Susima the devaputta, as the praise of Venerable Sāriputta was spoken, his assembly of devaputtas, delighted, joyful, filled with joy and happiness, manifested various kinds of radiant colors. “Just as in the autumn season, when the sky is clear and cloudless, the sun, rising into the sky, dispelling all darkness in the atmosphere, shines, glows, and radiates; even so, for Susima the devaputta, as the praise of Venerable Sāriputta was spoken, his assembly of devaputtas, delighted, joyful, filled with joy and happiness, manifested various kinds of radiant colors. Then Susima the devaputta, concerning Venerable Sāriputta, spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One – “Known as ‘The Wise One,’ Sāriputta is without anger; Content, gentle, self-controlled, the sage praised by the Teacher.” Then the Blessed One, concerning Venerable Sāriputta, Susima the devaputta addressed him with a verse: “Known as wise, Sāriputta is not angry; Of few desires, gentle, disciplined, The well-disciplined awaits his time.” 10. Discourse on the Disciples of Various Sects 111. Thus have I heard: On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling in Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, at the Squirrels’ Feeding Place. Then, a number of devaputtas, disciples of various sects—Asama, Sahali, Nīka, Ākoṭaka, Vegabbhari, and Māṇavagāmiya—when the night was far advanced, with resplendent beauty, illuminating the entire Bamboo Grove, approached the Blessed One. Having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, they stood to one side. Standing to one side, the devaputta Asama, referring to Pūraṇa Kassapa, spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One: “Here, Kassapa, In those who are cut and killed, In those whose lives are destroyed, Does not see evil, Nor good for himself; He indeed proclaimed trust, A teacher worthy of honor.” Then the devaputta Sahali, referring to Makkhali Gosāla, spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One: “Well-restrained in asceticism and aversion, Having abandoned speech and quarrel with people; Free from all blame, a truth-speaker, Surely such a one does not commit evil.” Then the devaputta Nīka, referring to Nigaṇṭha Nāṭaputta, spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One: “A bhikkhu who is scrupulous, sagacious, Well-restrained in the fourfold restraint; Declaring what is seen and heard, Surely he would not be guilty of wrongdoing.” Then the devaputta Ākoṭaka, referring to various sectarians, spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One: “Pakudha Kātyāyana, Nigaṇṭha, And those others who are here— Followers of Makkhali, Teachers of the group, having attained recluseship, Surely they are not far from good people. Then the deity Vegabbhari replied to the deity Ākoṭaka with a verse: By companionship, a wretched jackal, A jackal is never equal to a lion; A naked liar, a teacher of the group, Of wavering conduct, not like the virtuous. Then Māra the Evil One, having possessed the deity Begabbhari, spoke this verse in the presence of the Blessed One: Engaged in austerity and self-mortification, Maintaining seclusion; And those attached to forms, Delighting in the deva-worlds; They indeed rightly instruct, For the other world, out of compassion. Then the Blessed One, knowing, ‘This is Māra the Evil One,’ replied to Māra the Evil One with a verse: Whatever forms, here or beyond, And those in the sky, of radiant hue; All of them are praised by Namuci, Like bait thrown for the destruction of fish.
