Of what kind do the deities worship?” “One who is virtuous, wise, with self developed, Composed, delighting in jhāna, mindful; All sorrows have vanished, abandoned, With defilements destroyed, bearing the final body. “Of such kind do they call one virtuous, Of such kind do they call one wise; Of such kind does one move, having crossed suffering, Of such kind do the deities worship.” 5. Candana Sutta 96. Standing to one side, the deity Candana addressed the Blessed One with a verse: “How indeed does one cross the flood, Diligent day and night? Without support, without a foothold, Who does not sink in the deep?” “Always endowed with virtue, Wise, well-composed; With aroused energy, with mind directed, One crosses the flood, hard to cross. “Averted from sensual perception, Gone beyond the fetter of form; With delight and passion utterly destroyed, That one does not sink in the deep.” 6. Vāsudatta Sutta 97. Standing to one side, Kakudha the devaputta said to the Blessed One: “Do you rejoice, ascetic?” “Having gained what, friend?” “Then, ascetic, do you sorrow?” “Having lost what, friend?” “Then, ascetic, you neither rejoice nor sorrow?” “Even so, friend.” “Are you without fault, bhikkhu? Is there no delight for you? When you sit alone, Does discontent not assail you?” “Without fault am I, yakka, And there is no delight for me; When I sit alone, Discontent does not assail me.” “How are you without fault, bhikkhu? How is there no delight for you? How, when you sit alone, Does discontent not assail you?” “For one born of fault, there is delight; For one born of delight, there is fault; A bhikkhu without delight, without fault, Thus know me, friend.” “After a long time, indeed, I see A brahmin fully extinguished; A bhikkhu without delight, without fault, One who has crossed the entanglement in the world.” 9. Having said this, he paid homage to the Blessed One, circumambulated him, and vanished right there. Then, when that night had passed, the Blessed One addressed the bhikkhus: “Bhikkhus, last night, a certain devaputta, when the night was far advanced, with a resplendent beauty illuminating the entire Jetavana, came to where I was; having come, he paid homage to me and stood to one side. Standing to one side, bhikkhus, that devaputta spoke these verses in my presence: “This indeed is Jetavana, inhabited by a host of sages; Dwelled in by the King of Dhamma, it brings me joy. “Action and knowledge and Dhamma, and virtue, the supreme life; By these mortals are purified, not by clan or by wealth. “Therefore, a wise person, seeing his own welfare; Should wisely discern the Dhamma, thus he is purified therein. “Like Sāriputta in wisdom, in virtue and in peace; Even a bhikkhu who has crossed over, would be no more than this.” “This, bhikkhus, is what that devaputta said. Having said this, he paid homage to me, circumambulated me, and vanished right there.” When this was said, Venerable Ānanda said to the Blessed One: “That, venerable sir, must have been the devaputta Anāthapiṇḍika. The householder Anāthapiṇḍika, venerable sir, was devoted to Sāriputta.” “Excellent, excellent, Ānanda! As far as reasoning can reach, you have reached it.
