Nine successive abidings: Here, friends, a monk, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, secluded from unwholesome states, enters and dwells in the first jhāna, which is accompanied by initial application and sustained application, born of seclusion, and filled with rapture and happiness. With the stilling of initial application and sustained application… he enters and dwells in the second jhāna. With the fading away of rapture… he enters and dwells in the third jhāna. With the abandoning of happiness… he enters and dwells in the fourth jhāna. With the complete transcendence of perceptions of form… he enters and dwells in the sphere of infinite space. With the complete transcendence of the sphere of infinite space, perceiving ‘infinite consciousness,’ he enters and dwells in the sphere of infinite consciousness. With the complete transcendence of the sphere of infinite consciousness, perceiving ‘there is nothing,’ he enters and dwells in the sphere of nothingness. With the complete transcendence of the sphere of nothingness, he enters and dwells in the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception. With the complete transcendence of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception, he enters and dwells in the cessation of perception and feeling. These nine phenomena are to be directly known.
