11. The Discourse on the Elevenfold Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling in Campā, on the bank of the Gaggarā lotus pond, together with a great Sangha of bhikkhus, with five hundred bhikkhus. There, the venerable Sāriputta addressed the bhikkhus, saying: "Friends, bhikkhus!" "Friend!" those bhikkhus replied to the venerable Sāriputta. The venerable Sāriputta spoke this: "I will declare the elevenfold, the Dhamma for attaining Nibbāna; For the ending of suffering, for the release from all fetters." One Dhamma "One Dhamma, friends, is of great help; one Dhamma should be developed; one Dhamma should be fully understood; one Dhamma should be abandoned; one Dhamma leads to decline; one Dhamma leads to distinction; one Dhamma is difficult to penetrate; one Dhamma should be brought forth; one Dhamma should be directly known; one Dhamma should be realized. (Ka) "Which one Dhamma is of great help? Mindfulness in wholesome states. This one Dhamma is of great help. (Kha) "Which one Dhamma should be developed? Mindfulness of the body accompanied by happiness. This one Dhamma should be developed. (Ga) "Which one Dhamma should be fully understood? Contact with influxes, leading to clinging. This one Dhamma should be fully understood. (Gha) "Which one Dhamma should be abandoned? The conceit 'I am.' This one Dhamma should be abandoned. (Ṅa) "Which one Dhamma leads to decline? Unwise attention. This one Dhamma leads to decline. (Ca) "Which one Dhamma leads to distinction? Wise attention. This one Dhamma leads to distinction. (Cha) "Which one Dhamma is difficult to penetrate? Concentration of mind without interval. This one Dhamma is difficult to penetrate. (Ja) "Which one Dhamma should be brought forth? Unshakeable knowledge. This one Dhamma should be brought forth. (Jha) "Which one Dhamma should be directly known? All beings subsist on nutriment. This one Dhamma should be directly known. (Ña) "Which one Dhamma should be realized? Unshakeable liberation of mind. This one Dhamma should be realized. Thus these ten These phenomena are real, true, thus, unalterable, unchangeable, rightly fully awakened by the Tathāgata. Two phenomena 352. Two phenomena are very helpful, two phenomena are to be developed, two phenomena are to be fully understood, two phenomena are to be abandoned, two phenomena lead to decline, two phenomena lead to distinction, two phenomena are difficult to penetrate, two phenomena are to be produced, two phenomena are to be directly known, two phenomena are to be realized. (Ka) Which two phenomena are very helpful? Mindfulness and clear comprehension. These two phenomena are very helpful. (Kha) Which two phenomena are to be developed? Tranquility and insight. These two phenomena are to be developed. (Ga) Which two phenomena are to be fully understood? Name and form. These two phenomena are to be fully understood. (Gha) Which two phenomena are to be abandoned? Ignorance and craving for existence. These two phenomena are to be abandoned. (Ṅa) Which two phenomena lead to decline? Obduracy and bad friendship. These two phenomena lead to decline. (Ca) Which two phenomena lead to distinction? Amenability and good friendship. These two phenomena lead to distinction. (Cha) Which two phenomena are difficult to penetrate? The cause and condition for the defilement of beings, and the cause and condition for the purification of beings. These two phenomena are difficult to penetrate. (Ja) Which two phenomena are to be produced? Two knowledges: knowledge of destruction, knowledge of non-arising. These two phenomena are to be produced. (Jha) Which two phenomena are to be directly known? Two elements: the conditioned element, and the unconditioned element. These two phenomena are to be directly known. (Ña) Which two phenomena are to be realized? True knowledge and liberation. These two phenomena are to be realized. Thus these twenty phenomena are real, true, thus, unalterable, unchangeable, rightly fully awakened by the Tathāgata. Three phenomena 353. Three phenomena are very helpful, three phenomena are to be developed... ...three phenomena are to be realized. (Ka) Which three phenomena are very helpful? What? Association with good people, listening to the good Dhamma, practice in accordance with the Dhamma. These three things are very helpful. (Kha) "Which three things are to be developed? Three concentrations: concentration with initial and sustained application, concentration without initial application, with sustained application only, concentration without initial and sustained application. These three things are to be developed. (Ga) "Which three things are to be fully understood? Three feelings: pleasant feeling, painful feeling, neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling. These three things are to be fully understood. (Gha) "Which three things are to be abandoned? Three cravings: craving for sensual pleasures, craving for existence, craving for non-existence. These three things are to be abandoned. (Ṅa) "Which three things are conducive to decline? Three roots of unwholesome action: greed is a root of unwholesome action, hatred is a root of unwholesome action, delusion is a root of unwholesome action. These three things are conducive to decline. (Ca) "Which three things are conducive to distinction? Three roots of wholesome action: non-greed is a root of wholesome action, non-hatred is a root of wholesome action, non-delusion is a root of wholesome action. These three things are conducive to distinction. (Cha) "Which three things are difficult to penetrate? Three elements of escape: the escape from sensual pleasures is renunciation, the escape from forms is the formless, and whatever is arisen, conditioned, dependently originated, the cessation of that is its escape. These three things are difficult to penetrate. (Ja) "Which three things are to be produced? Three knowledges: knowledge of the past, knowledge of the future, knowledge of the present. These three things are to be produced. (Jha) "Which three things are to be directly known? Three realms: the sensual realm, the form realm, the formless realm. These three things are to be directly known. (Ña) "Which three things are to be realized? Three knowledges: the knowledge of recollecting past lives is knowledge, the knowledge of the passing away and reappearance of beings is knowledge, the knowledge of the destruction of the taints is knowledge. These three things are to be realized. "Thus, these thirty things, real, true, actual, not otherwise, not different, were rightly fully awakened to by the Tathāgata." ddha. Four Dhamma 354. “There are four Dhamma that are very helpful, four Dhamma to be developed… …four Dhamma to be realized. (A) “Which are the four Dhamma that are very helpful? The four wheels: residing in a suitable place, associating with good people, right self-direction, and having done meritorious deeds in the past. These are the four Dhamma that are very helpful. (B) “Which are the four Dhamma to be developed? The four foundations of mindfulness: Here, friends, a bhikkhu dwells contemplating the body in the body, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, removing covetousness and displeasure concerning the world. He dwells contemplating feelings in feelings… …mind in mind… …Dhamma in Dhamma, ardent, clearly comprehending, mindful, removing covetousness and displeasure concerning the world. These are the four Dhamma to be developed. (C) “Which are the four Dhamma to be fully understood? The four nutriments: physical food, coarse or subtle, contact is the second, mental volition is the third, consciousness is the fourth. These are the four Dhamma to be fully understood. (D) “Which are the four Dhamma to be abandoned? The four floods: the flood of sensual desire, the flood of becoming, the flood of views, the flood of ignorance. These are the four Dhamma to be abandoned. (E) “Which are the four Dhamma that lead to decline? The four yokes: the yoke of sensual desire, the yoke of becoming, the yoke of views, the yoke of ignorance. These are the four Dhamma that lead to decline. (F) “Which are the four Dhamma that lead to distinction? The four disconnections: disconnection from the yoke of sensual desire, disconnection from the yoke of becoming, disconnection from the yoke of views, disconnection from the yoke of ignorance. These are the four Dhamma that lead to distinction. (G) “Which are the four Dhamma that are difficult to penetrate? The four concentrations: concentration leading to decline, concentration leading to stability, concentration leading to distinction, concentration leading to penetration. These are the four Dhamma that are difficult to penetrate. (H) “Which are the four Dhamma to be generated? The four knowledges: knowledge of the Dhamma, knowledge of inference, knowledge of the other, knowledge of convention. These are the four Dhamma to be generated. to be comprehended. (Jha) ‘‘Which are the four things to be fully known? The four Noble Truths – the Noble Truth of suffering, the Noble Truth of the origin of suffering, the Noble Truth of the cessation of suffering, the Noble Truth of the path leading to the cessation of suffering. These four things are to be fully known. (Ña) ‘‘Which are the four things to be realized? The four fruits of recluseship – the fruit of stream-entry, the fruit of once-returning, the fruit of non-returning, the fruit of arahantship. These four things are to be realized. ‘‘Thus, these forty things are real, true, actual, not otherwise, not different, rightly fully enlightened by the Tathāgata. Five Things 355. ‘‘Five things are of great help… (as before)… five things are to be realized. (Ka) ‘‘Which are the five things of great help?
