from a stomach ailment. And having died, he will be reborn among the Kālakañcikā asuras, the lowest class of asuras. And having died, they will cast him away in the Bīraṇatthambaka charnel ground."' 'Therefore, friend Korakkhattiya, you should eat a little food, and drink a little water. So that the ascetic Gotama's word may be false.' 8. Then, Bhaggava, Sunakkhatta the Licchavi prince counted the seven days and nights, disbelieving the Tathāgata. Then, Bhaggava, the naked Korakkhattiya died on the seventh day from a stomach ailment. And having died, he was reborn among the Kālakañcikā asuras, the lowest class of asuras. And having died, they cast him away in the Bīraṇa they cast him away in the Bīraṇatthambaka charnel ground. 9. Now Sunakkhatta the Licchavi, Bhaggava, heard this: “Indeed, the naked Korakkhattiya has died of a stomach ailment and been cast away in the Bīraṇatthambaka charnel ground.” Then, Bhaggava, Sunakkhatta the Licchavi went to the Bīraṇatthambaka charnel ground, to the naked Korakkhattiya. Having approached, he struck the naked Korakkhattiya three times with his hand: “Do you know, friend Korakkhattiya, your destination?” Then, Bhaggava, the naked Korakkhattiya wiped his back with his hand and arose. “I know, friend Sunakkhatta, my destination. I have been reborn among the Kālakañcika asuras, the lowest class of asuras,” having said this, he fell back down right there. 10. Then, Bhaggava, Sunakkhatta the Licchavi came to me. Having approached, he paid homage to me and sat down to one side. To Sunakkhatta the Licchavi, who was sitting to one side, I said this, Bhaggava: “What do you think, Sunakkhatta? Was the result exactly as I declared to you concerning the naked Korakkhattiya, or otherwise?” “Just as the Blessed One declared to me, Venerable sir, concerning the naked Korakkhattiya, exactly so was the result, not otherwise.” “What do you think, Sunakkhatta? If this is so, is a superhuman feat of psychic power accomplished or not accomplished?” “Certainly, Venerable sir, if this is so, a superhuman feat of psychic power is accomplished, not not accomplished.” “Even so, you foolish man, when I perform a superhuman feat of psychic power, you say this: ‘Indeed, Venerable sir, the Blessed One does not perform a superhuman feat of psychic power.’ See, foolish man, how much you have erred in this.” Even so, Bhaggava, though spoken to by me, Sunakkhatta the Licchavi departed from this Dhamma and Discipline, just as bound for the woeful states, bound for hell. The Story of Acela Kaḷāramaṭṭaka 11. Once, Bhaggava, I was dwelling in Vesālī, in the Great Wood, in the Gabled Hall. Now at that time, the naked ascetic Kaḷāramaṭṭaka was residing in Vesālī, having attained the highest gain and the highest fame in the Vajji country. He had completely undertaken seven vows: ‘As long as I live, I shall be a naked ascetic, I shall not wear clothes. As long as I live, I shall be a celibate, I shall not engage in sexual intercourse. As long as I live, I shall sustain myself only with liquor and meat, I shall not eat rice or gruel. To the east of Vesālī is a shrine named Udena; I shall not pass beyond it. To the south of Vesālī is a shrine named Gotamaka; I shall not pass beyond it. To the west of Vesālī is a shrine named Sattamba; I shall not pass beyond it. To the north of Vesālī is a shrine named Bahuputta; I shall not pass beyond it.’ Because of undertaking these seven vows, he had attained the highest gain and the highest fame in the Vajji country. 12. Then, Bhaggava, Sunakkhatta the Licchavi prince approached the naked ascetic Kaḷāramaṭṭaka; having approached, he questioned the naked ascetic Kaḷāramaṭṭaka. When questioned, the naked ascetic Kaḷāramaṭṭaka could not answer. Unable to answer, he displayed anger, ill-will, and displeasure. Then, Bhaggava, this thought occurred to Sunakkhatta the Licchavi prince: ‘Indeed, we have insulted a worthy ascetic. May this not be for our harm and suffering for a long time!’ 13. Then, Bhaggava, Sunakkhatta the Licchavi prince approached me; having approached, he saluted me and sat down to one side. As he sat to one side, Bhaggava, I said to Sunakkhatta the Licchavi prince: ‘You too, foolish man, will claim to be a recluse of the Sakyan clan!’ ‘But why, venerable sir, do you He said thus: "You too, indeed, foolish man, will claim to be a Sakyan ascetic?" "Did you not, Sunakkhatta, approach the naked ascetic Kalaramattaka and ask him a question? That naked ascetic Kalaramattaka, questioned by you, could not answer. Unable to answer, he revealed anger, ill-will, and displeasure. Then you thought: 'Alas, we have offended a worthy, an Arahant ascetic. May it not be for our harm and suffering for a long time!'" "Yes, venerable sir. But, venerable sir, is the Blessed One jealous of Arahantship?" "Indeed, foolish man, I am not jealous of Arahantship, but this evil view has arisen in you; abandon it. May it not be for your harm and suffering for a long time. And as for that naked ascetic Kalaramattaka, Sunakkhatta, whom you consider a worthy ascetic, he will, before long, having fallen away, wandering with his followers, eating rice gruel, passing all the shrines in Vesali, die disgraced." Then, Bhaggava, the naked ascetic Kalaramattaka, before long, having fallen away, wandering with his followers, eating rice gruel, passing all the shrines in Vesali, died disgraced. 14. Then, Bhaggava, Sunakkhatta the Licchavi heard: "Indeed, the naked ascetic Kalaramattaka, having fallen away, wandering with his followers, eating rice gruel, passing all the shrines in Vesali, has died disgraced." Then, Bhaggava, Sunakkhatta the Licchavi approached me; having approached and saluted me, he sat down to one side. To Sunakkhatta the Licchavi, sitting to one side, I said this: "What do you think, Sunakkhatta, was the outcome exactly as I declared to you concerning the naked ascetic Kalaramattaka, or otherwise?" "Exactly as..." Indeed, Venerable Sir, The Blessed One declared Concerning the naked ascetic Kaḷāramaṭṭaka, That his result would be thus, And not otherwise. What do you think, Sunakkhatta, If this is so, Is a superhuman feat of psychic power performed, Or not performed? Certainly, Venerable Sir, If this is so, A superhuman feat of psychic power is performed, Not not performed. Yet still, you foolish man, While I perform a superhuman feat of psychic power, You say this to me: 'Indeed, Venerable Sir, The Blessed One does not perform A superhuman feat of psychic power.' See, foolish man, How greatly you have erred! Thus, Bhaggava, Sunakkhatta the Licchavi's son, Though spoken to by me, Departed from this Dhamma and Discipline, As one destined for a woeful state, For hell. The Story of Pathikaputta the Naked Ascetic 15. Once, Bhaggava, I was dwelling right there in Vesālī, In the Great Wood, In the Gabled Hall. Now at that time, Pathikaputta the naked ascetic Was residing in Vesālī, Having attained the highest gain And the highest fame Among the Vajjians. He spoke thus In the assembly in Vesālī: 'Ascetic Gotama is a speaker of knowledge, I too am a speaker of knowledge. Indeed, a speaker of knowledge Should demonstrate A superhuman feat of psychic power To another speaker of knowledge. Let Ascetic Gotama come halfway, And I too will go halfway. There, both of us Shall perform Superhuman feats of psychic power. If Ascetic Gotama performs One superhuman feat of psychic power, I will perform two. If Ascetic Gotama performs Two superhuman feats of psychic power, I will perform four. If Ascetic Gotama performs Four superhuman feats of psychic power, I will perform eight. Thus, however many Superhuman feats of psychic power Ascetic Gotama performs, I will perform double that amount, Double that amount. I will not do it. 16. Then, Bhaggava, Sunakkhatta the Licchavi's son approached me; having approached me, he saluted me and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, Bhaggava, Sunakkhatta the Licchavi's son said this to me – ‘The naked ascetic, sir, Pāthikaputta, dwells in Vesālī, having attained the highest gain and the highest fame in Vajjigāma. He speaks such a word in the assembly in Vesālī – ‘Even Gotama the recluse is a speaker of knowledge, I too am a speaker of knowledge. Indeed, a speaker of knowledge is worthy to show a superhuman feat of psychic power to another speaker of knowledge. Gotama the recluse should come halfway, I too should go halfway. There, both of us should perform a superhuman feat of psychic power. If Gotama the recluse performs one superhuman feat of psychic power, I will perform two. If Gotama the recluse performs two superhuman feats of psychic power, I will perform four. If Gotama the recluse performs four superhuman feats of psychic power, I will perform eight. Thus, however many superhuman feats of psychic power Gotama the recluse performs, I will perform double that, double that.’" ‘‘When this was said, I, Bhaggava, said this to Sunakkhatta the Licchavi's son – ‘It is impossible, Sunakkhatta, for the naked ascetic Pāthikaputta to come into my presence without abandoning that speech, without abandoning that thought, without relinquishing that view. Even if he were to think thus – ‘I will go into the presence of Gotama the recluse without abandoning that speech, without abandoning that thought, without relinquishing that view’ – his head would surely split apart.’" 17. ‘May the Blessed One, sir, protect that speech, may the Fortunate One protect that speech!’" ‘But why, Sunakkhatta, do you say this to me – ‘May the Blessed One, sir, protect that speech, may the Fortunate One protect that speech’?" ‘Bh... And, venerable sir, this word was unequivocally declared by the Blessed One: It is impossible for the naked ascetic Pāthikaputta, without abandoning that speech, without abandoning that thought, without relinquishing that view, to come into my presence. If he were to think thus:
