that having given a gift, you thus dedicate it: ‘By this gift, may I meet King Payasi only in this world, not in the next’’’? ‘‘Yes, sir.’’ ‘‘Why then, dear Uttara, having given a gift, do you thus dedicate it: ‘By this gift, may I meet King Payasi only in this world, not in the next’? Are we not, dear Uttara, seekers of merit, expecting the fruit of the gift?’’ ‘‘In your gift, sir, such food is given: broken rice with sour gruel, which you, sir, would not wish to touch with your foot, much less to eat; and coarse clothes, made of goat hair, which you, sir, would not wish to touch, much less to wear. But you, sir, are dear and pleasing to us. How could we join the pleasing with the unpleasing?’’ ‘‘In that case, dear Uttara, prepare such food as I myself eat. And prepare such clothes as I myself wear.’’ ‘‘Yes, sir,’’ Uttara the student replied to King Payasi. And he prepared such food as King Payasi ate. And he prepared such clothes as King Payasi wore. 440. Then King Payasi, having given a gift disrespectfully, having given a gift not with his own hand, having given a gift without consideration, having given a gift as if thrown away, with the breaking up of the body, after death, was reborn in the company of the Devas of the Four Great Kings, in an empty Serisaka mansion. But the student named Uttara, who was engaged in his gift, having given a gift respectfully, having given a gift with his own hand, having given a gift with respect, having given a gift with his own hand, having given a gift with his mind intent, having given a gift not thrown away, at the breaking up of the body, after death, he was reborn in a good destination, in the heavenly world, in companionship with the Tāvatiṃsa devas. Pāyāsi the Deva-son 441. At that time, the venerable Gavampati often went for his day-dwelling to the empty Serīsaka mansion. Then Pāyāsi the deva-son approached the venerable Gavampati; having approached and saluted the venerable Gavampati, he stood to one side. To Pāyāsi the deva-son, standing to one side, the venerable Gavampati said this: "Who are you, friend?" "I, venerable sir, am Pāyāsi the chieftain." "Were you not, friend, of such a view: 'There is no other world, there are no spontaneously born beings, there is no fruit or result of good and bad deeds'?" "It is true, venerable sir, I was of such a view: 'There is no other world, there are no spontaneously born beings, there is no fruit or result of good and bad deeds.' But I was freed from that evil view by the noble Kumārakassapa." "Where then, friend, was that young man named Uttara reborn, who was engaged in your giving?" "That young man named Uttara, venerable sir, who was engaged in my giving, having given a gift with respect, having given a gift with his own hand, having given a gift with his mind intent, having given a gift not thrown away, at the breaking up of the body, after death, was reborn in a good destination, in the heavenly world, in companionship with the Tāvatiṃsa devas. But I, venerable sir, having given a gift without respect, having given a gift not with my own hand, having given a gift without my mind intent, having given a gift thrown away, at the breaking up of the body, after death, was reborn in companionship with the devas of the Cātumahārājika realm, in the empty Serīsaka mansion. Therefore, venerable Gavampati, go to the human world and announce this: 'Give gifts with respect, give gifts with your own hand, give gifts with your mind intent, give gifts not thrown away. Pāyāsi the chieftain, having given a gift without respect, Having given a gift disrespectfully, having given a gift not with his own hand, having given a gift without attention, having given a gift as if discarded, after the breaking up of the body, after death, he was reborn into the companionship of the Devas of the Four Great Kings, into an empty Serīsaka mansion. But the young man named Uttara, who was engaged in that giving of his, he, having given a gift respectfully, having given a gift with his own hand, having given a gift with attention, having given a gift not as if discarded, after the breaking up of the body, after death, was reborn into a good destination, the heavenly world, into the companionship of the Tāvatiṃsa devas. Then indeed, the venerable Gavampati, having come to the human world, thus declared: "Give gifts respectfully, give gifts with your own hand, give gifts with attention, give gifts not as if discarded. Prince Pāyāsi, having given a gift disrespectfully, having given a gift not with his own hand, having given a gift without attention, having given a gift as if discarded, after the breaking up of the body, after death, was reborn into the companionship of the Devas of the Four Great Kings, into an empty Serīsaka mansion. But the young man named Uttara, who was engaged in that giving of his, he, having given a gift respectfully, having given a gift with his own hand, having given a gift with attention, having given a gift not as if discarded, after the breaking up of the body, after death, was reborn into a good destination, the heavenly world, into the companionship of the Tāvatiṃsa devas."
