‘This is Dhamma,’ or ‘This is not Dhamma,’ ‘This is Vinaya,’ or ‘This is not Vinaya,’ ‘This was not spoken, not uttered by the Tathāgata,’ or ‘This was spoken, uttered by the Tathāgata,’ ‘This was not practiced by the Tathāgata,’ or ‘This was practiced by the Tathāgata,’ ‘This was not laid down by the Tathāgata,’ or ‘This was laid down by the Tathāgata,’ ‘This is an offense,’ or ‘This is not an offense,’ ‘This is a light offense,’ or ‘This is a heavy offense,’ ‘This is an offense with a remainder,’ or ‘This is an offense without a remainder,’ ‘This is a serious offense,’ or ‘This is not a serious offense.’ Whatever there is quarrel, strife, dispute, contention, diverse speech, contrary speech, a matter of opposition, a conflict, this is called a Dispute Case. In a Dispute Case, the Saṅgha disputes. Disputing a Dispute Case, one accuses. Accusing an Accusation Case, one incurs an offense, an Offense Case. For that offense, the Saṅgha performs an act, a Business Case. Thus, due to the Dispute Case, the four cases arise. 315. The Accusation Case, of the four cases, which case does it give rise to? The Accusation Case, of the four cases, does not give rise to any case; but rather, due to the Accusation Case, the four cases arise. How How so? Here monks accuse a monk concerning a lapse in conduct or a lapse in behavior or a lapse in view or a lapse in livelihood. That which is there accusation, denunciation, reproof, rebuke, persistent fault-finding, instigation, giving support, this is called a case of accusation. In a case of accusation the Saṅgha disputes. Disputing a case of dispute one accuses. Accusing a case of accusation one incurs an offense, a case of offense. Due to that offense the Saṅgha performs an act, a case of duty. Thus, dependent on a case of accusation four cases arise. 316. A case of offense among the four cases which case does it give rise to? A case of offense among the four cases does not give rise to any case; but rather, dependent on a case of offense four cases arise. How so? The five groups of offenses are a case of offense; the seven groups of offenses are a case of offense; this is called a case of offense. In a case of offense the Saṅgha disputes. Disputing a case of dispute one accuses. Accusing a case of accusation one incurs an offense, a case of offense. Due to that offense the Saṅgha performs an act, a case of duty. Thus, dependent on a case of offense four cases arise. 317. A case of duty among the four cases which case does it give rise to? A case of duty among the four cases does not give rise to any case; but rather, dependent on a case of duty four cases arise. How so? That which is the Saṅgha's duty, its task, an announcement, a motion, a motion with a second, a motion with a fourth, this is called a case of duty. In a case of duty the Saṅgha disputes. Disputing a case of dispute one accuses. Accusing a case of accusation one incurs an offense, a the case of an offense. By that offense, the Saṅgha performs an act, a case of business. Thus, due to the case of business, four cases arise. The section on origination is finished, the twentieth. 21. The Section on Association 318. A case of dispute, of the four cases, with which case is it associated? On which case is it dependent? Which case does it include? By which case is it comprised? A case of accusation, of the four cases, with which case is it associated? On which case is it dependent? Which case does it include? By which case is it comprised? A case of offense, of the four cases, with which case is it associated? On which case is it dependent? Which case does it include? By which case is it comprised? A case of business, of the four cases, with which case is it associated? On which case is it dependent? Which case does it include? By which case is it comprised? A case of dispute, of the four cases, is associated with a case of dispute, is dependent on a case of dispute, includes a case of dispute, is comprised by a case of dispute. A case of accusation, of the four cases, is associated with a case of accusation, is dependent on a case of accusation, includes a case of accusation, is comprised by a case of accusation. A case of offense, of the four cases, is associated with a case of offense, is dependent on a case of offense, includes a case of offense, is comprised by a case of offense. A case of business, of the four cases, is associated with a case of business, is dependent on a case of business, includes a case of business, is comprised by a case of business. 319. A case of dispute, of the seven ways of settling, with how many ways of settling is it associated, on how many ways of settling is it dependent, how many ways of settling The comprised of, by how many settlements is it covered? By how many settlements is it settled? An accusation-case, of the seven settlements, how many settlements does it resort to? How many settlements does it depend on? How many settlements is it comprised of? By how many settlements is it covered? By how many settlements is it settled? An offence-case, of the seven settlements, how many settlements does it resort to? How many settlements does it depend on? How many settlements is it comprised of? By how many settlements is it covered? By how many settlements is it settled? A duty-case, of the seven settlements, how many settlements does it resort to? How many settlements does it depend on? How many settlements is it comprised of? By how many settlements is it covered? By how many settlements is it settled? A dispute-case, of the seven settlements, resorts to two settlements, depends on two settlements, is comprised of two settlements, is covered by two settlements, is settled by two settlements— namely, settlement in the presence and by majority vote. An accusation-case, of the seven settlements, resorts to four settlements, depends on four settlements, is comprised of four settlements, is covered by four settlements, is settled by four settlements— namely, settlement in the presence, by appeal to memory, by appeal to sanity, and by the declaration of depravity. An offence-case, of the seven settlements, resorts to three settlements, depends on three settlements, is comprised of three settlements, is covered by three settlements, is settled by three settlements— namely, settlement in the presence, by acknowledgement, and by covering over with grass. A duty-case, of the seven settlements, resorts to one settlement, depends on one settlement, is comprised of one settlement, is covered by one settlement, is settled by one settlement— namely, settlement in the presence. The twenty-first section on resorting is finished. The classification of settlements is finished. Its summary: Cases, method, common and shared; Settlements, common, equal. Pertaining to that. Settlements and in presence, and by skilled discipline; Where associated with settlement, they are settled and not settled. And indeed a settlement-case, and they pertain to origination, thus.
