Monks, the act of suspension for not relinquishing a wicked view, when endowed with three factors, is a lawful act, a vinaya act, and well settled. It is done in presence. Concerning not giving up a bad view in the act of suspension. The twelve acts according to Dhamma are finished. The six (factors) for one who desires (to suspend). Monks, for a bhikkhu endowed with three factors, the Sangha, if it wishes, concerning not giving up a bad view, may perform an act of suspension. He is a quarrel-maker, a strife-maker, a dispute-maker, a gossip-maker, a creator of legal issues in the Sangha; he is foolish, unskilled, full of offenses, unrepentant; he dwells mixed with laypeople, with inappropriate association with laypeople – Monks, for a bhikkhu endowed with these three factors, the Sangha, if it wishes, concerning not giving up a bad view, may perform an act of suspension. Monks, for a bhikkhu endowed with other three factors, the Sangha, if it wishes, concerning not giving up a bad view, may perform an act of suspension. He is corrupt in higher morality, corrupt in conduct, corrupt in higher view – these Indeed, monks, if a monk is endowed with three qualities, and if he does not renounce a bad view, the Saṅgha, if it wishes, may perform the act of suspension. Also, monks, if a monk is endowed with three qualities, and if he does not renounce a bad view, the Saṅgha, if it wishes, may perform the act of suspension. He speaks dispraise of the Buddha, he speaks dispraise of the Dhamma, he speaks dispraise of the Saṅgha. Indeed, monks, if a monk is endowed with these three qualities, and if he does not renounce a bad view, the Saṅgha, if it wishes, may perform the act of suspension. For three monks, monks, if the Saṅgha wishes, if they do not renounce a bad view, may perform the act of suspension. One is deficient in higher virtue, one is deficient in conduct, one is deficient in view. Indeed, monks, for these three monks, if the Saṅgha wishes, if they do not renounce a bad view, may perform the act of suspension. Also, monks, for three other monks, if the Saṅgha wishes, if they do not renounce a bad view, may perform the act of suspension. One speaks dispraise of the Buddha, one speaks dispraise of the Dhamma, one speaks dispraise of the Saṅgha. Indeed, monks, for these three monks, if the Saṅgha wishes, if they do not renounce a bad view, may perform the act of suspension. Should perform the act. Then the Sangha performed an act of suspension on the monk Ariṭṭha, formerly a vulture-killer, for not abandoning a wicked view – non-communion with the Sangha. He, having been suspended by the Sangha for not abandoning a wicked view, strayed. Those monks who were of few wishes ... They complained, grumbled, and criticized: "How can the monk Ariṭṭha, formerly a vulture-killer, having been suspended by the Sangha for not abandoning a wicked view, stray?" Then those monks reported this matter to the Blessed One. Then the Blessed One, on this occasion, on this matter, having assembled the community of monks, questioned the monks: "Is it true, monks, that the monk Ariṭṭha, formerly a vulture-killer, having been suspended by the Sangha for not abandoning a wicked view, strays?" [to him (Sī. Ka.)]? "Yes, Blessed One." The Buddha, the Blessed One, rebuked him: "It is not fitting... (as before)... How can this foolish man, monks, having been suspended by the Saṅgha for not renouncing a wicked view, wander away? This, monks, is not for the conversion of the unconverted... (as before)... Having rebuked him... (as before)... having given a discourse on the Dhamma, he addressed the monks: "Therefore, monks, the Saṅgha should revoke the act of suspension for not renouncing a wicked view. The Forty-Three Cases Where It Should Not Be Revoked 72. "Monks, for a monk endowed with five qualities, the act of suspension for not renouncing a wicked view should not be revoked. He gives ordination, he gives dependence, he attends to a novice, he accepts the appointment as an instructress of nuns, and though appointed, he instructs the nuns – for a monk endowed with these five qualities, monks, the act of suspension for not renouncing a wicked view should not be revoked. [pari. 420] "Monks, for a monk endowed with another five qualities, the act of suspension for not renouncing a wicked view should not be revoked. He commits the offense for which the Saṅgha suspended him for not renouncing a wicked view, or another similar offense, or one worse than that; he blames the act, he blames those who performed the act – for a monk endowed with these five qualities, monks, the act of suspension for not renouncing a wicked view should not be revoked... (as before)... "Monks, for a monk endowed with eight qualities, the act of suspension for not renouncing a wicked view should not be revoked. For a bhikkhu, monks, endowed with these five factors, who does not relinquish a wicked view, the act of suspension should be revoked.
