No offense if he goes for the sake of the Sangha, or a shrine, or a sick person; for a mad person, for the first offender. Now at that time, a certain man ordered a certain bhikkhu: "Go, venerable sir, examine such-and-such a woman." He went and asked the people: "Where is such-and-such a woman?" "She is asleep, venerable sir." He felt remorse: "A training rule has been laid down by the Blessed One, have I perhaps incurred a Sanghādisesa offense?" He reported this matter to the Blessed One. "There is no offense of Sanghādisesa, bhikkhu; there is an offense of dukkata." Now at that time, a certain man ordered a certain bhikkhu: "Go, venerable sir, examine such-and-such a woman." He went and asked the people: "Where is such-and-such a woman?" "She is dead, venerable sir." ... "She has gone out, venerable sir." ... "She is not a woman, venerable sir." ... "She is a female eunuch, venerable sir." He felt remorse... ... "There is no offense of Sanghādisesa, bhikkhu; there is an offense of dukkata." Now at that time, a certain woman, having quarreled with her husband, went to her mother's house. A bhikkhu who frequented that family made a reconciliation. He felt remorse... was high… and so on… “Are they fit to be spoken to, bhikkhus?” “They are not fit to be spoken to, Blessed One.” “There is no offense, bhikkhu, in not being fit to be spoken to.” Now at that time a certain bhikkhu engaged in acting as a go-between for a hermaphrodite. He felt remorse… and so on… “There is no offense, bhikkhu, of a Saṅghādisesa; there is an offense of a grave transgression.” The training rule concerning acting as a go-between is finished, the fifth. 6. The Training Rule Concerning a Hut 342. Now at that time the Buddha, the Blessed One, was staying at Rājagaha, in the Bamboo Grove, the Squirrels’ Feeding Place. Now at that time the bhikkhus of Āḷavī had huts built by asking, ownerless, for their own use, immeasurable. These did not come to completion. They lived much given to asking, much given to entreating – “Give a man, give a man to help, give an ox, give a cart, give an adze, give an axe, give a hatchet, give a spade, give a pickaxe, give creepers, give bamboo, give muñja grass, give pabbaja grass, give ordinary grass, give clay.” People were annoyed, annoyed by their asking, annoyed by their entreating. Seeing the bhikkhus, they were startled, they were terrified, they ran away, they went by another way, they turned their faces away, they even closed their doors. They even ran away seeing a cow, thinking it was a bhikkhu. Then indeed, the venerable Mahākassapa, having spent the Rains at Rājagaha, set out for Āḷavī. In due course, he arrived at Āḷavī.
