It is said that this is a vigorous shaking of the upper body. That is, after sitting in a cross-legged posture, do three shakes. Then, place the right hand on top and the left hand below, and cross the hands. The palms face up. Place the fingers of the right hand under the left hand, and clasp the index finger of the left hand with the index finger of the right hand. Extend forward, twisting the wrists. The same gesture in reverse will also twist. Exert force three times each. Then, extend the left fist from the height of the shoulder to the front left corner. Push with the right fist three times. Do the same on the right side. Shake three times again, and finally lower. This latter one is called the three shakes, used to eliminate regret, discomfort, and distractions. These physical exercises each have their own specific key points, which should be understood from the root text. Thus, these are the oral instructions of the wisdom dakini Niguma, the key to dissolving wind and mind into the central channel, the key to untying the knots of the channels, the key to becoming the lord of skillful means in one's own body, the key to accomplishing the supreme path of liberation, called the Eighteen Physical Exercises. The root text for this, some are secret oral transmissions, and many are scattered among a large amount of text and difficult to collect. Although there may be rough summaries written by those who are not proficient, it seems that there is no clear method of practice. Therefore, in order to prevent this practice from declining and to allow it to develop, Tarānātha, who has gained a slight faith in the glorious Shangpa Kagyu, has clearly recorded it without concealment. Mangalam! Om Svasti! Dharmakāya all-pervading, bliss-emptiness union sphere, The life of all stable and moving things, constantly abides, But for unenlightened beings, to purify the two obscurations, Tāranātha clearly reveals the profound Dharma. The king of tantras is like a water reservoir, waves of accomplishments are connected, A million heaps of profound jewels are scattered from this, The mother who gives birth to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the three times, May your pure collection of teachings, flourish and spread for the fortunate beings, For the effortless propagation of countless scriptures and images, The venerable Yönten Zangpo, In the year 1996, In the pure land of Dzamtang.
