Taking Refuge in the Noble Three Jewels. Taking Refuge in the Noble Three Jewels. The Noble One Called Taking Refuge in the Three Jewels. In Sanskrit: Ārya Triśaraṇagamana Nāma Mahāyāna Sūtra. In Tibetan: The Noble One Called Taking Refuge in the Three Jewels, The Great Vehicle Sutra. I prostrate to the Three Jewels! Thus have I heard. At one time, the Bhagavan was dwelling in Shravasti, in Jeta's Grove, in Anathapindika's Garden, together with a great community of monks, with twelve hundred and fifty monks. Then, at that time, the venerable Shariputra was dwelling alone in solitude, and such thoughts arose in his mind: If I could directly see the Teacher, I would go before the Sugata, the Lord of Dharma, and ask: If a son or daughter of good family, endowed with faith, goes for refuge to the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha of monks, how much merit will that person accumulate, and so forth. Then, the venerable Shariputra, at the time of the afternoon, arose from his meditation, went to where the Bhagavan was, and having arrived, bowed his head at the feet of the Bhagavan, and sat down on one side. Having sat down on one side, the venerable Shariputra said to the Bhagavan: Venerable One, I was dwelling alone in solitude, and while in meditation, such thoughts arose in my mind: If a son or daughter of good family, endowed with faith, goes for refuge to the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha, how much merit will that person accumulate, and so forth. After he had asked this, the Bhagavan said to the venerable Shariputra: Shariputra, it is good, good that you have asked for the benefit of many beings, for the happiness of many beings, out of compassion for the world, for the sake of the great multitude of beings, for the benefit and happiness of gods and humans. You have come before the Tathagata,

Therefore, in order for the bodhisattva to fully understand Shariputra, I will give an example: If there is a person who possesses such great神通 (Tibetan: རྫུ་འཕྲུལ་, Sanskrit: ṛddhi, Romanization: riddhi, Meaning: magical power), that he can transfer all the beings on this Jambudvipa, and the nearby continents, this Jambudvipa which is seven thousand yojanas in breadth and length, to other world systems, make it as flat as the palm of his hand, and build a stupa as large as Jambudvipa out of the seven precious substances—gold, silver, वैडूर्य (Tibetan: བཻ་ཌཱུརྻ་, Sanskrit: वैडूर्य, Romanization: vaiḍūrya, Meaning: lapis lazuli), crystal, red pearls, རྡོའི་སྙིང་པོ་ (Tibetan: རྡོའི་སྙིང་པོ་, Sanskrit: aśmagarbha, Romanization: aśmagarbha, Meaning: core of stone), and amber—its height reaching up to the Brahma world. Then, he makes offerings to that stupa with divine incense, divine flowers, divine garlands, divine parasols, banners, and streamers. After that, this person again possesses such great神通 (Tibetan: རྫུ་འཕྲུལ་, Sanskrit: ṛddhi, Romanization: riddhi, Meaning: magical power), that he can transfer the water of the four great oceans to other world systems, and fill them with sesame oil of maruka, as full as the four great oceans, and continuously offer lights for as long as many kalpas last. Shariputra, what do you think? Will that person accumulate more merit from that basis? They replied: World-Honored One, yes, much. Sugata, yes, much. This transcends all Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas. World-Honored One, this is the realm of the Sugata. Sugata, this is the realm of the Tathagata. The Buddha said: Shariputra, whether it is a son of good family or a daughter of good family, the accumulation of merit obtained by anyone who takes refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha cannot even come close to the previous accumulation of merit, not even by a hundredth part, a thousandth part, a millionth part, or even be approached by numbers, reasons, or calculations. When this Dharma teaching was being expounded, this three-thousand great thousand world system shook, shook violently, shook completely violently, trembled, trembled violently, trembled completely violently, quaked, quaked violently, quaked completely violently. At that time, great flashes of lightning occurred. The gods also sounded drums.

It was proclaimed. Then, the venerable Ānanda said to the Bhagavan: "Bhagavan, what is the name of this Dharma category? How should it be held?" The Bhagavan replied: "Ānanda, you should hold this Dharma category as 'Accomplishing through limitless doors.' Its meaning should be viewed as such, and held as such." After the Bhagavan had spoken thus, the venerable Śāriputra and the other monks greatly rejoiced at the words spoken by the Bhagavan. The Mahāyāna Sūtra called 'Taking Refuge in the Three Jewels' is complete. It was translated, edited, and finalized by the Indian Abbot Sarvajñādeva and the great translator, the monk Palbrtsegs.
