The Sutra of the Earth. The Sutra of the Earth. The Sutra of the Earth is here. In Sanskrit: Bhumi Sutra. In Tibetan: The Sutra of the Earth. Homage to all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Thus have I heard, at one time, the Blessed One was dwelling in the Thirty-Three, the abode of the gods of the Thirty-Three, at the root of the tree of complete assembly. Then, the lord of the gods, Indra, requested the Blessed One with verses: Which beings go to the happy realms? Which beings are born in the heavens? Who in the days and nights, Constantly increase merit? The lord of the gods, Indra, thus requested with verses. Having requested with verses, the answer was given with verses: Creating monasteries and gardens, Which beings build bridges? Houses on the water and wells, Who gives places of rest? Endowed with faith and discipline, Wise and without miserliness, Not attached to all desires, Constantly diligent in benefiting beings, Those beings go to the happy realms, Those beings are born in the heavens, Those in the days and nights, Constantly increase merit. Those with miserliness do not become gods, The foolish do not give charity, The steadfast are pleased with charity, They will be happy in the next life. The fault of the field is like weeds, This person has the fault of desire, Therefore, for those who are free from desire, Giving and the result will become great. Whoever gives to the Buddhas and the Dharma, And to the Sangha and stupas, Men or women, To those who have discipline, Wherever they are born, Like the four kings of men, They will become the best among the gods, And become the supreme king. When wandering in samsara, Without relatives except for giving, Those with wisdom and complete desires, Should diligently give. Whoever gives this land as far as an arrow can reach, That person goes to the realm of the gods, And rejoices for eons in the heavens. Whoever gives land like a monastery garden, Will be greatly increased before Brahma, And rejoice for eons in the heavens. Indra.

For the sake of the monastery, giving land as charity greatly increases the merit of Brahma, and one enjoys immeasurable kalpas in the heavens. Land adorned with a rosary for washing, if given with the mark of cultivation, for millions of kalpas, that will not change its vitality. Especially for those with discipline, whoever gives the field of fruit, whoever gives, that person will obtain endless fruit. Land is rice fields, sugarcane groves, barley adorned with green. Whoever gives that, the bliss of the gods will greatly increase. Sword, lion, seat, and umbrella, the best horse and the best elephant, are the flowers of land giving, the fruit of a hundred gifts is liberation. Whoever takes land, and whoever gives land, because both are beneficial, they will surely go to the heavens. Just as a hundred gifts in water, sesame oil drops spread, similarly, for the giving of land, relying on truth increases merit. Just as a cow with milk, milking feeds the calf, similarly, in the auspicious kalpa, giving land, the land will completely nourish. Similarly, through excellent land giving, yogurt and fresh butter, rivers and rivers of milk flow, it will become satisfying. A king suffering from desire, whatever sins he has committed, abandoning half will cause harm, through giving he will go to a good destination. A king suffering from desire, whatever sins he has committed, abandoning half to the Sangha, through giving he will go to a good destination. Completely examine the land from the cow, examine the calf from the direction of the mother, examine the horse from the direction of the father, people live by discipline. From meditation, excellently giving land, whoever prevents that, those who gather and destroy mountains, people will go to hell. Doing charity equal to land, having many treasures equal to charity, there is no merit equal to truth, there is no sin heavier than falsehood. Then a hundred gifts, the powerful one, the master of happiness and so on, bowed his body, with the precious nature of land, offered to the Three Jewels. The Land Sutra ends. Translated by the Indian Abbot Padmakaravarma and the reviser, the monk Rinchen Zangpo.
