Chapter Twenty-Six: Examining the Four Extremes of Acceptance and Rejection Chapter Twenty-Six: Examining the Four Extremes of Acceptance and Rejection Then again, the sage Vidyajñana said this: "O great sage, listen! Examining through the four extremes of acceptance and rejection, there are four situations: easy to cure, difficult to cure, only able to maintain, and to be abandoned. Easy to cure means possessing the necessary factors, and being easy to cure from the perspectives of both the person and the disease. Easy to cure from the perspective of factors means having the three aspects of doctor, medicine, and nursing. The doctor must have ascended the platform of expertise, understand the meaning of the scriptures, see all the symptoms and be virtuous. The medicine must possess rituals and many qualities, be well-prepared and suitable. The nurse must be clever, loving, clean, and intelligent. Having these twelve factors makes it easy to cure. From the perspective of the person, the patient must be young and gentle, have courage, have a body that can tolerate all medicines, be wealthy, and be able to listen to and understand instructions. Being able to accurately repeat the asked symptoms makes it an easy case to cure. Easy to cure from the perspective of the disease means that the cause, initial symptoms, and duration are short, and that the harmful factors do not match the environment, time, or constitution, and that harmless, single, and newly arising diseases are easy to cure. However, for epidemics, if the environment and time are the same; for edema, if the harmful factors are the same; and old blood clots are also considered easy to cure. Difficult to cure means that the above easy-to-cure factors are mixed together, requiring many methods and long-term treatment. Conversely, when the condition has deteriorated and become habitual, only the remaining life force can be maintained, and only barely. Situations to be abandoned are divided into two types: those with and without treatment methods. For kings, friends who do not listen to advice, those who hate others, those who do not respect doctors but despise them, those who are busy and not wealthy, those who cannot listen to advice, those whose lives are ending, those who are overwhelmed by sorrow, those who destroy the Dharma, and those who bring about bad influences, even if there is a treatment method, they should be abandoned. To be abandoned because there is no treatment method means that the condition is severely reversed and confused, signs of death appear, and the body is seized by nine deadly diseases." Thus he spoke. This is the twenty-sixth chapter, examining the four extremes of acceptance and rejection, from the Secret Oral Transmission Tantra of the Eight Branches, the Essence of Ambrosia.
